On Tuesday of last week the doors
of the country homo of Mr. and Mrs
1).' W. Oliver, Oak Hill, were thrown
open for the pleasure of a few friends
who came over from Conway to
spend the afternoon and evening.
The party consisted of Mr. and Mrs.
A. ft. l)anforth,of Chicago, Illinois,
Misses Bessie Kollinson and Katie
Galbraith and Mr. Will Rollinson of
Conway.
The evening was pleasantly spent
in discussing dilVerent topics such as
farming, trucking, lishing, etc., and
at 8:30 o'clock a supper was served
in dainty stylo. The supper con
sisted of several kinds of cakes, coffee
and champagne. Every one said
it was the pleusantest event that has
taken place in quite a while.
The Misses and Messrs. Oliver at
tended the dance at Mr. and Mrs
Pitman's on last ftriday night and
reports a nice pleasant time.
Mr. and Mrs. J. 1). Oliver spent
last Sunday with their parents at
Centenary.
Summer has come at last and sonic

their summer flight. Those that
haven't flown are preparing to do
so.
D. \V. Oliver, Esq., and daughter,
Miss Flora, will leave Monday for
Wrightsville (N. C.) Beach where
they will spend a few weeks.
Well, for something new Centenary
hasn't got any sickness to report
this time, nor marriages. But

?Why
Not a Canning Plant?
Mr. Editor ? 0(&r Sir I want to
see the cannery business stated in
Horry on abroad plane.
As Mr. W. I). Hickman said, in
last week's issue, every family ought
to have a cannery most families can
can or jar enough for their use of the
goods they have but this is not all
they want. Some do not have the kind
they I ke most. They have to go to
the market or exchange with some
neighbor.
Now there are thousands of dollars
worth of fruit and vegetables lost
annually because there is no cannery
at hand. The goods would bring the
farmer a fair price if put in shape
for market The family and 'arm
hands have plenty of time to do the
work and save lots of money thev
see rot on the farm.
It is time for the farmers of Horry
to organize a Horn canning company
with a warehouse at Conway.
It shonld have sulliciant capital to
take care of the waste at lca#t.
Each farmer to take one or more
shares to become a member. This
company to keep cans, labels, Ac.,
in stock for the members. They

the warehouse. ICach mom her
can opporale his cannery on
his farm. The cannery can be
cheaply establishes (on the vacinrn
styie) to any good family .vash
house to can from 1(100 to 2000 cans
per day. When the goods arc
properly canned, labled, and crated
take to the warehouse, have the
goods inspected and take a warehouse
receipt, the agent to sell the goods.
Now the goods are in lhe warehouse
the buyer knows whore to lind what
he wants.
Of course we would insure the
warehouse and slock and elect
officers and all that if we can organize.
Hut jnst now I am only trying
to kick Mr. Hickman's ball a little
higher up the- hill, with the hope
that someone will land it on top
Now some people may think that
this will only benelit the truckers
near Con way. Not so the entire county
would be benefited. The peaches
on Pee Deo and oysters on the sea
coa9t would meet at the warehouse
and go to the consumer together.
The agent could sell the goods. If
tho farmer tries to sell independent
ho will find his mistake.
Mln union there is strength."
Let tho farmers organize and there
will be moro than twelve baskets of

On the 2(>th day of May. 15)011, the
good Lord sent the death angel to
visit the home of S'dnev John so i
t o carry away the spirit of a kind
and loving wife. She lingered a long
time and sulTercd much pain. She
did not murmur or complain. All
was done that could be done to stay
the hand of death by doctors, husband,
mother and fricnds|but without
avail. She leaves a husband, one
child, a mother, two brothers, one
Sister and a host of friends to mourn
their loss, but wo fool that our loss
is her eternal gain. vVe believe that
she has crossed over the river and is
resting under the shade of the overlasting
trees, where sickness nor
sorrow nor pain nor death will be
no more. A Friend.
