The dispensary investigating
committee are bringing out some
very ugly things from time to time,
and things that the witnesses hate
to tell. One man last week smTered
himself to be arrested and argued
his case before the supreme court
before he would tell some conversations
he had with Lanahan the representative

No one could seriously blame Par
kcr for his reluctance in the matter,
for as ho said, it was nothing but a
conversation, a private one, and we
must congratulate those members
of the committee who voted to excuse
him from giving the name of
Lauahan's representative in the
State after he had tried to get Boyken
to act for him, and things would
not stay arranged. The representative
Lanahan finally secured, as
Parker testified, was not connected
with the dispensary, and as it was
not shown that he had been guilt y
of any violation of the laws, it would
have been :m ?

Parker to tell his name, and thus
bring public contempt on him, when
there is no cause to suspect him of
any public wrong. The people of
the State will uphold this Legisla
lative committee in anything they
may do that is within their legitimate
powers, and that is right and
proper, but thev must remember
that there is such a Miing as going
too far.
Tt is well said that every man in
this world, no matter how good or
how bad, will have enemies. No
matter how much good a man may
undertake to try to accomplish in
the world, and no matter how useful
he may be to his follow man, no
matter to what success or fame he
may attain, he will find those who
are bitter against him and those
who will never lose any opportunity
to disparage him. Even the best

All great movements that
?verc ever conceived and put on foot
for the betterment of the human
race found opposition from those
who were enemies of those who
conceived, planned and started
them, and this no matter how much
good was accomplished.
The discoveries recently made in
regard to the methods used by the
big packing houses in Chicago, are
of a most revolting nature, and they
will result in cutting down the consumption
of can nod meats. Hut the
state of affairs has been revealed is
nothing short of what we have
always expected. Canned meats
are unheal thy no matter with what
care they may he packed, but when
scrapings from the tloor and discarded
and diseased carcasses are ground
up and made into deviled ham and
sausages, it is time to let canned
meats alone under all circumstan rs.
Now in the end the rich pack; i s
have perhaps gained nothing bv
these methods, for already canin
meats have been excluded from th
imports into countries across the.sea,
and stringent laws may he passed by
many States at the next session of
their Legislatures.

way of varied industries. The timber
supplies of the county are
gradually being exhausted, and the
time will come when they will be
entirely gone. a hen the town will
be in a condition not to be envied.
But the time to prevent such a condition
is now.

house stands and the present jail
lot will both be suitable for cutting
up into lots for business houses.
The sale of this property 'ater on

prices will aid in the growth of the
town.

wonderful increasing prosperity
which has marked these last years
The farmers all have more money
and are not so much in debt. Most
of them we believe have seen the
point and are taking advantage of
tiie knowledge.
W. R. Lk vis has done well to
secure the location of the new court
houseandjail on his property. Mr.
Lewis secured his property when
values were low, but it has been
increasing in value with the growth
af the town. The location of the
new court house in that community
will shove the values of his property
still higher.

then of a warm campaign in some
respects. Lot it be hoped that the
campaign will be marked by tho
absence of "mud slingling"' and
that the candidates will make their
fight 011 a high plane
There is the man who works his
plans open and above board, and
there is he who snot ks about laying
Ins plans in secret. The latter is
sometimes described by the slang
expressions, "snake in the grass/'
It is natural for a man to o<jt mad
sometimes and this failing of the
human animal is recopnizcd in holy
writ, but ascommanded therein, you
should not let the sun <jodown upon
your wrath.

who have assisted me in any way
in my misfortune and distress.
Some have helped me with money,
some with lumber and some with la
bor and by their assistance and the
faithful carpenters today we moved
from the barn back to the same spot
of ground where our house stood
before it was burned. Our n<?w

of May. Our children wore sick all
the time while we were out there.
Dr. J. A. Norton was called and
made two trips. May was a long,
sad month for us and wo are glad to
get back into our open house. 1
have the names of all those who assisted
in any way and allow me to
thank yon again for helping me carry
my burden.
The cause of the lire remains a
mystery to me. I was at the stove
two hours after any fire was used in
the stove- Mary, my wife was in
the passage after 11 o'clock', at 12
o'clock we were d.ivon out bv the
flames in:o the open air in our night
clothes and barefooted.
