VOL, XX. TO SPEAK HERE j/ SP.NATOH TILLMAN M'll.!. IIP HERE JULY 20TII. CAMPAIGN DAY FOB HOBRY. I lie Senator Will Doubtless Discuss flic Dispensary and the Scandals iirowlnjt Dot of the Imiiiisition Proceeding's in Co. I ii in t>ia. In response to a letter addressed to 11iin somt) time ago, the county chairman has received a letter from Senator Tillman statin# that if nothing prevents, he will be at Con way on July 20 th with State candidates, and will make an address to the people. We have been requested to publish this notice that his friends and his enemies too, as to that matter, may attend the meet in# and hear what he has to say. His spoach will likely be a feature of the occasion, although many of the State candidates are good spe ik ers and will claim their share of attention. A large crowd of people is ex pec toil. Tabor, IS, C. Dear Herald:?As I am not a subscriber to the Herald, you cannot set me dow?A n.s* a deadhead. I am fortunate enough as to have an upto date Horry county son-in-law who is a faithful patron of the paper, and as such, 1 read every copy at his expense. If such were not the facts in the case, 1 would strain a point rather than miss it. It is an excellent paper and a gem among our liles. 1 just ask the privilege to answer the dear brother's question who - . . X/ ? v I I will 1/(11 ojr 1UOU l\ I 1 U asks somo one to answer two questions--viz: 1st ?"Does ihe Bible teach us anything concerning the distance of a Sunday's journey?" 2nd?"And where can we find it?" Now, in reply 1 will say that mention is made of a Sabbath day's journey in the 1st chapter and 12th verse of the Acts of Apostles, and this is equivalent to answering the first question, for Webster says Sunday or Sabbath. The word Sunday is not mentioned in the Bible, that I know of; the word Sunday was derived from Sun worship, or God's day. Sunday the seventh day; the day to worship the Sun or Sol. 2nd?As to how far or the exact distance? We answer: That the best clue to this is found in the l(?th chapter 2nd verse. The best Bibical expositors place the distance at* about 2000 paces or 0000 feet. Tn the first place 6. VV. Altman has a fine field of cotton that promises a bale to the acre. Another thin# observed was that small grain on poor land was worth but little. New buildings continue to go up in this community. There is hardly a day but what some new buildin# is started. There is lots of work#oin#on here now. The community is filled up with now comers who have moved here to make this place their home. 4 More than ever /htfore, candidates 1 for the Legislature may well put on their studyin# caps and post themselves on one question. That bein# the dispensary. The voters hero Swill expect clear deliverance fr m :and by the candidates for the lem-sc. Jos. N. Atkinson and his bride came down from Marion Thursday to spend a fe?y Tv*urs with the grooms parents. W. M. Thompson and W. M. Atkinson were visiting at Johnsonville Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. John Godbold of Pulonia, S, C , spent Thursday at the homo of K. A. Atk.nson. J W. and J. P. Jones will leave Tuesday for Darlington, where they will spend several days. Stranger. Card of Thanks. I desire to thank my friends and neighbors for the great kindness and sympathy shown me and family during the sickness and death of my son and daughter.* Mrs, L. C. Shelly. Let the Elerald into your home. (The C Criminal Killed. There was an account in the Savannah Morning News of a few days agoabout the killing of a negro robber near Savannah, while resisting < arrest by deputy sherilT K. J. Bourne. A bench warrant had been issued for the negro and .placed in the hands of Sherin Bourne. J. A. Keller was pressed in to assist in I making the arrest. The negro ran ' and got away before Bourne and Keller got anywhere near him. Blood hounds were obtained and . the chase continued for about six miles. The dogs caught the negr~> near a church and when the men came up lie was standing them oil with a pistol. . Keller called to him to surrender and lie held his hands above his head retaining his pistol in his hand, lie started toward Keller but before he reached him dodged behind u tree levelling his 1 pistol. The pistol snapped and Kel- i lei* shot the negro dead with the , the Winchester he carried. SherilY Bourne is a brother of former town * marshal S F. Bourne. Dove Tiller performed two 1 marriage ceremonies last week. 1 The first one was on Thursday at ' 12 o'clock when Miss Aliee Rogers, ? of Soring Branch section, and Mr. : Willie Lewis, of Horry, were married < at the bride's residence. A bridal i dinner was served immediately after i the ceremony, and that afternoon I the happy young couple left for their < future home in llorry, whore Mr. Lewis is engaged in farming. In and Around INixonvillcWc are having some nice rains , novv which are very beneficial to . crops. Crops are looking well but are very small for this time of tin; year, j There is some sickness through here at this time. Mrs. Hamp Veroon of Hand, died on last Saturday with typhoid 1 fever, we learn. Mrs. X'ereenJ was . only married about eight months ago, but God in his wisdom saw lit to take her away. She leaves many j relatives and friends to mourn their loss. May the bereaved husband find grace to sustain him in this his time of need. There was quite an enjoyable pic nic and fish fry at Tilly Lake on last Saturday. The fish were not so plentiful but the table was loaded j with other good things such as the good ladies of this section know how to prepare All seemed to enjoy the occasion very much, and wanted to know where the next one would be. I see the site for the new court house and jail has been selected and we think the commissioners made a judicious selection. Now we hope the work will begin at the carlies i possible moment, but don't forget the bridges. We wafltir them, too. The candidates' column is growing. That's right. The (' station stands on land she once ;>wncd and the place has been named 1 in her honor. The road bed is now ' said to be one of the test in the (' State leaving out of consideration of * course the A. C, L. main line. And work is in progress now which will make the track from this point to (' the beach fully as good as the new 1 track from Conway to Cool Spring f The old cars formerly used on the c road, and which were much in need t jf paint and repairs, have been dis- * warded, and nice rolling stock put ^ 3u the road and will lie used in the 1 regular schedule which has been put t 3ii between this point and Aynor 11 3ii the one hand and this point and 1 Myrtle Beach on the other. Wo are pleased to be able to say ii behalf of the Board of Health that hey have done some excellent work n draining that portion of town ying between Main and Laurel treets which has been such an eye ore to us all, besides detrimental to lealth. We say again that too much an t be said for the Board of Health aid health ollieers in draining this oul place. But let them continue is there is much yet to do. The litch in the rear of Kingston Hotel sand always has been a source of illicit annovauce and contention and >1 ways will be until it is moved, as t is in the wrong place; besides this here are other foul places. For nstaner there are two between (>tIt nd 7th avenues, opposite the old chool house that are nothing more han a hatchery for fever germs. His record though short is a good one. It is surprising to many to see see so many idle colored boys and youths loafing on the streets. They congregate in large numbers on the street corners and in divers places often to the discomfort and inconvenience of the more thrifty element of our citizenship, both white and colored. They are a nuisance to the public wcel and an impediment to the progress of the town and a menace to the civilization of this Christian era. They will not work for love nor'money; or even to supply themselves with the common necessaries of life. Such being the case it is encumbent upon both the State and city authorities to rigorous enforce the vagrant law to the end that the growing nuisance be abated and the indolent and idle element be forced to seek employment or else be put upon the public works and be made to do some good for their country.
