nothing iu his race. As to the influence
he may have in this State in
favor of the dispensary when this
becomes an issue, is another question.
But all the talk about his
views on the dispensary question
injuring Tillman is nonsence, as those
who arc now telling it will ere long
find out- lie is so valuable n Congress
that even his enemies will be
fools to vote against him in favor of
a man who has not even been tried
in the position.
The town should pass an ordinance
at once, unless such action has already
been taken, requiring and
enforcing strict regulations about
the deposition of scraps and slop
water around the hotels, rooms and
other buildings in the business portion
of the town. The solids and
liquids should be separated and then
the liquids could be passed orT
through drains and ditches and the
solids hauled off by the town cart.
Was the dispensary investigating
committee appointed with a view to
preserve the institution or with
the opposite intention, that of
getting evidence that would wipe
it from the face of the State? This
is a puzzling question since certain
things have taken place. Time alone
will show, but it will come out in
the end.
The commissioners of internal
improvements seemed to be tied up
over something, no one can toll
exactly what just now. Important
things like those the commission
has in hand are expected to take a
long time of course, but unless simple
and less costly expedients are
resorted to while we arc waiting,
there is no telling what may become
of the town.
There are so many strawberries
now being grown every year that
there is talk of overproduction.
Some hold, however, that the acreage
planted cannot elTect the prices

the outcome of poor facilities in the
way of cars and the icing of them.
The Conway Iron works is a progressive
firm even the misfortune of
week before last cannot discourage.
Already they are rebuilding, and it
is said their new plant will be bet ter
than the old.
There are many who profess to
be interested in the progress of a
town, but not one cent will they
spend of their own money toward
that end. Selfishness does it work
here as it does in other things.
Ann the strawberry growers
seemed to be please with the outcome
of the crop this year. 'J his
is good, but try to make next y< r
better.
If you value your reputation better
stay out of politics. If you ever
stole a sheep it is sure to be found
out and told on you.
A noon name is rather to be chosen
than great riches, but this is a
proverb not always regarded in
politics.
Tmk town has a fire engine that is
a good thing in its way, but now
water is the question.
Some people will now realize that
there is value in a hand shake.
In support of his resolution Senator
Tillman made a masterly speech
on the subject of the outrages committed
by the railroads in West
Virginia and Pennsylvania, and if
credit is due to any particular-Senator
for the legislation embodied in
the McLaurin amendment, Tillman
is surely entitled to it.
The candidates for the State offices
are planking down their money and
signing the pledge.

Blossoms from Centenary.
Editor Herald: As it has been so
Ion# since Centenary has had anything
to say, she feels sure the
correspondents will feel angry if she
doesn't hurry and make excuses for
her long silence.
Well, a*> usual Centenary has
nothing to report except visitors
and sickness. There is and has been
much sickness in this section for the
last few months, but I am glad to
state there hasn't been a death in
our community in months.
Lance Dunn, the little four-yearold
son of Mr. and Mrs R. J. Dunn,
has been very ill for the past four
weeks with typhoid fever, but is
now improving a little and we trust
the little fellow will soon be out
agai n.
The crops are needing rain very
much Those that were a little late
in getting their cotton planted
seem to be worried about the stand 1
as it is very bad.
J.T. Suggs, one of Myrtle Beach's
progressive young business men. 1
made a pleasant call in our community
Sunday afternoon.

Mrs. Melvina Vick died at her
home in Socastee recently after a
painful illness. She bore her atliietion
with Christian fortitude and
patience and as the shadows gathered
thicker around her she lifted her
eyes to heaven where Jusus is and
her gentle spirit took its everlasting
llight to the city of many mansions.
Hor relatives have the sympathy
of many friends in this their
hour of allliction. Con.
Our Georgia Letter.
Mr. Editor: Ploace allow me space
in your columns to say a few words.
I am living at Hinesville, Ga., and
the health is real good. I find the
people here very kind, especially to
tlio sick and aged The people here
are engaged in farming and a great
deal of truck farming is being done.
Some turpentine is being worked
though this industry is some what
on the decline. Prices for crude
turpentine averages from $0.00 to
112.00 per barrel. Good prices are
also paid for labor, which is real
scarce. Saw mills are also doing a
good business, a great deal of lumber
being madeandsold. Thiscounty
is building up very fast. Some stock
is raised but not to very much profit.
A great deal of poultry is raised and
to much profit. The people are beginning
to get incubators and are
using them very successiully. There
is much talk about politics with live
candidates in the field ?three editors,
one lawyer and one farmer and
there was one preachor but lie has
recently retired from the race in favor
of ihe lawyer. United Senator,
judges, Solicitors and in faot all of
the officers are elected by the direct
vote of the people. The liquor question
is not in politico like it is in
South Carolina. Georgia has local
option and it seems to

satisfaction. I havo been living here
about eight months and like my
location and surroundings very
much. 1 thought I would write this
as it might be of interest to my
