Last year the llerahl experienced
some inconvenience by reason of
various people over the county
sending iu lists of names for the
different county oftices recommending
thmn for the office and trying to
induce them to enter the race. Hecause
of the fact that the paper
charges for publishing the announcements
of the candidates, it is a little
unfair, when you come to think
about it, to let this or that voter
come out and endorse any particular
candidate or set of candidates for
the offices, and we decided then than
when election times came round
again, we would charge the usual
price for the announcement, and
also regular rates for any other
matter offered for publication in the
interest of a candidate or candidates,
and leave out any free notices of any
kind. It is not right to charge one
candidate for his card, and then a
friend of some other candidate, who
perhaps has not inserted his card,
to publish something in his interest
free. So we trust it is well under.
stood that matterof the kind herein
mentioned must be paid for at the
regular rates, and marked plainly
as advertising, should the editor so
wish to mark it. Equal rights to
all in politics is a good rule and the
Herald will try to follow it this
year.
The nuisance of the trains along
Main street still continues, and the
noise, smoke and dust seem to increase
in volume from day to day.
On some days horses break loose and
run away and there are other accidents
and annoyances hard to bear,
Still the move for taking the trains
away to another part of the town
is very slow.
The voters of the county should
now lay aside prejudice and factional

umerence, if any, unci bring out the
best men for office. Good men are
needed for the offices and the exercise
of good judgment on the part
of the voters will get good men and
keep them there.
Many people are interested as to
the outcome of the Johnson case, but
so far nothing has been heard from
thoSupreme court. It is said if the
court refuses a new trial Johnson 1
will have to be resentenced at the
fall term of court for this county.
Witii all the lumber mills at Con- i
?v'ay, yet it is almost impossible at
times to get a small bill of lumber
here.
Ulind Tigers are beginning to
open their eyes since tho organization
of the Law and Order league.

Mr. Editor: Please give me space
in vour columns for a following statement:
Last Friday three weeks ago all
the furniture 1 had not burned m>

together with the dwelling i. <1
kitchen and their contents, except
one bed, two trunks and a sewing
machine. Most of the clothing thu.
I kept in the trunks were out sunning
and were almost a total loss
as were also my seed pease and
cbufus I am informed that someone
has said that we were back in as
good a fix as we were before the
fire. That is a mistake as the fact
is that we are not in near so good a
condition. Another mistake has
been circulated that I was going
around bpgging. 1 have not begged
the people for anything, but have
begged the Lord, am still begging
him and expect to continue to beg
him as long as I can use mv tongue
to bo my friend, my advisor and my
helper. I do think the one who is <
circulating these reports had better
be doing the same also before it is
too late.
It is with a heart full of thankfulness
and gratitude that I am able to
say that many people came to my assistance
in rry time of sore distress.

The farmers were more
scared than hurt.

Senate on inter oceanic canals is favorable
to a sea level canal across
the Isthmus of Panama.
The Methodist general conference
at Birmingham lias voted down by a
large majority the proposition to
extend the pastoral limit tosix years.
It appears that Tillman will go
into the campaign without a contestant
for his toga. Wise indeed
is the politician of this day and generation.
Roosevelt is almost convicted of
double dealing in the matter of the
rate bill. Good honest people call
his action duplicity, politicians call
it diplomacy.
The barbecue season has opened up
in the 4 State of Lexington" and
its staid citizens will spend the summer
pulling pork ribs and listening
to the siren voice of the candidate.
According to tlie way some folk
think the State Democratic convention
could not endorsed Tillman and
his record and reject the dispensary
because the two are one and inseparably,
hence in endorsing Tillman
it practically endorsed the dispensary.

The General Assctnby of the
Southern Presbyterian Church met
in Greenville, this State, on May 10.
The most important matter consid
dered was that which seeks to
establish a union of all branches of
the Presbyterian faith for the prosecution
of work which can better be
done unitedly than separately.

The Orangeburg Cotton Growers'
association, in convention assembled,
has resolved1 that, "whereas the
Southern Wholesale Grocers' association,
at their last annual meeting,
unanimously passed a resolution endorsing
the use of cotton covering
for all products handled by them,
such as sugar, salt, grain, etc, that
the association hereby pledge itself
and every individual member to
strenuously advocate the use of cotton
covering for every article for
which it can be used.
The citizens of nearly every hamlet
enjoy the pleasure of week end
excursion rates to the seaside resorts
except those of the c.ty of Conway.
Why don't the railroad officials give
us the same rates that they give
other places? Why is Conway thus
discriminated against? are questions
asked by many. The railroads sell
week end tickets good going and
coming to Wilmington, Charleston

conceded to be the finest beach on

No Tariff for Uncle Sam.
Washington, May 15.?The President
to-day transmitted to Congress
a letter from Secretary Taft,
accompanied by numerous appendices,
bearing on the controverted
question of the right of the Isthmian
Canal commission to purchase supplies
aboard if they can be secured
cheaper than in America. The
President, in a letter to Secretary
Taft, says that the views expressed
by the latter, in the affirmative,
have his full approval.
