UP TO THE COMMISSION.!

( Iveii.
Ono not acquainted with the true
situation would imagine that the
question of the location of the new
court house and jail buildings had
been discussed so often both in the
public prints and private eonvorsa
tion that tlie subject had been worn
threadbare and had become tiresome
and monotonous, but such is not the.
ease as it still remains, and will
continue to be so until these sites
are definitely selected, the absorbing
theme of conversation by our
people both in the town and county.
There is one thing in connection
with this matter touching which wo
are all agreed and that is the gentlemen
of the commiss'on enjoy the
confidence of our people. Their business
ability is unsurpassed as is
evidenced by the successes tlicy have
made in their private affairs and their
patriotic motives arc unimpeachable
consequently it goes without saying
that their decision in this matter will
be influenced by no other consideration
than that of a purely business
transaction in connection with the
further consideration of what site
will best subserve the interest ol
I lorry.
Therefore eliminating every other
consideration from the discussion as
foreign to the matter in hand we
come down to the basic thought underlying
the whole fabric, namely
business and the interest of Horry.
As is well known there are several
propositions up before the com
mission all of which will doubtless
receive due consideration before the
final decision is made. There is the
Lewis offer of so many acres free,
The Collins offer of a square free, the
Uurroughs offer of land suplcmcnted
with a cash offer, the Conway Land
and Improvement Co. offer of land
free at High l'oint, the present site,
the Norman lot and the Heaty property,
The two last named will have
to be purchased outright at tip top
market prices. It is admitted by
all that the present site is entirely
too small for the purpose, To meet
this serious objection it is urged by
those who favor rebuilding on the
present sites that the commission
pay $f>,000 for a li ttle bit of dirt and a
dilapidated building. Should the
commission decide to do this, which
1 seriously question, the expense
will not stop here as sites would not
yet he sufficiently large to accommodate
ihe buildings which it is
proposed to erect, so the other two
lots will have to bo purchased at a
1 cost ranging in price anywhere from
$2,000 to $5,000, leuvir.g Todd's cor
ner lot, which cannot be purchased.
. _ ? A \ - ' * 1
us a perpetual monument lo mo un
business liko transaction Hut then i
the expense of placing the
new buildings where the old are
' enusi bo added ine cost of tearing
? dowi? the old ones and removing the
debris, so it is within the bounds
of reason to say that #15,000, if not
more, of the $40,000 will have been
expended before a piece of dirt is
1 broken lo receive the new ones.
Sentiment says build on the old sites
business says not, what say the commission?
\Tho objection \ti L'cd against the
t Norur'n lot is twofold First it is
loo small for the purpose and the
Lewis corner cannot he secured to
enlarge it: and sedond, it necessitates
the exoenditure, either in cash
, or kind, of a larjje portion of the
i resources at the disposal of thee m
mission. Nearly the same ' l.jpotions,
only with yroatly . added
force and emphasis, is^ni^ucd
against the selection of the
Hont.V pi Operty because it is proposed
to not only cxch mce a very
valuable piece o property f<?v one
less valuable in dollars and cents but
to pay a diHerpnoe n cash,' the
amount not being suggested. Lithcr
one or all three of llit? above propo
sitions must, lie re,eete(l as tin v are
antagonist ie to sound business laws
because the same ends and object
can l>e accomplished more economi
eall.v and with equal satisfaction to
! all parties concerned .by the select ion
of one of tin; oilers of free sites.
Kither one of theso free offers is by i
far more advantageous to the county
at large than either the present site,
the Norman lot or the ileaty prop1
erty for the reasons stated above,
1 but in the judgment of thoughtful
j men the Lewis offer is the most advantageous
one .yet made because it
combines nearness to the business
1 center of Conway with eligibleness
of situation. The selection of this
will mean a saving of an amount of
> money anywhere from 10 to $15,000.
- or in other words the entire $40,000
i can bo expended on tho buildings
and a handsome sum can bo realized
