GKAIIAM LOSES DWELLING AINI> KITCHEN BY FLAMES CAUSE UNKNOWN. THERE WAS NO INSURANCE And The Buildings arc a Total Loss, But the Most of the Furniture and Beds und Bed ClothIiik" Were Saved-- Family l.iviujr in Barn. ) n7 The dwelling house and kitchen of Mr. J. P. Graham, who lives on his fnu.v? - It " <i4i 111 uii uiu itcuvcs perry road near Reaves Ferry, were consumed bv (lames last Thursday. Most, ot' the furniture and bed clothing were saved from the burning buildings, but the family were left without shoes and other articles of clothing that are very much needed. The llamos awakened the family about 12 o'clock at night and they had gained such headway that nothing could be done to stop them. The cause of the (ire is entirely unknown, but it is supposed that a st^irk must have caught from the kitcluJuVstovo. Mr. Graham had just completed the erection of a new barn and in this the famiiv are now living, until another dwelling can be erected. Friends of the unfortunate family were raising contributions last week to help them out of their trouble. It is a heavy blow to any farmer to lose his dwelling, especially at this time of the year, and the people in this ease, should contribute enough to help Mr. Graham replace his loss. The Herald has undertaken to receive and transmit to Mr. Graham any amount its subscribers over the county are willing to give, and contributions of money or even building material may be left ii. Conway for him or handed to him personally. The people of Horry are always liberal in helping an unfortunate brother, and this case will hardly be au exception to the rule. If you wish to contribute send it to the Herald during the week and Mr. Graham will get it promptly with the name of the giver > " DIED. Mi*. May ham Vcrcen of Little ltivei\ S. Well, no: not exactly, fhr^ he is the solidest farmer in the country, lives within his income, is never bothered by autograph hunters, don't know lie's got a stomach, has senso enough to be aware that he's not a logical candidate for anything, cares even less than he knows about good form, has a wife who is uni cursed by social aspirations, trains up his children in the way they should go, and goes along with them in it, is not distantly related to any great man, can swap horses without skinning or being skinned, is never called prominent or stigmatized as colonel, owns a roadster tluU is just a little tit faster than an^other in the region and has a son-in-law that he is abundantly able to lick if tho.y should have a quarrel. Editor Herald-Please allow me space in yourcolumnsfora few lines. I see in the last issue of the paper a piece from Pleasant Meadow with! this query in it: "Why is it some church members don't believe in their own profession?" Well, it. is because they are not converted under Christ and are not full of the Holy Ghost, and care more for the cares of this world and its gtiods than hereafter. I think this will give the answer. Now, Mr. Wait attacks the character of Bro. Grainger for the money he will get for it. ? Farmers are very husy planting. An Open Letter Written By Mr. J. l.ewis Lee to Commissioner Watson. Explains a State of Affairs That Should not he Allowed to Continue. For the past week or two it appears that agents from the Chadbourn oormniinitv nml nmi?u.i ..... V v %% J \ ? liv.lll l't) Ot'U" tions, have been coming into Horry and carrying out hands by the car loads to engage in picking berries in another State. This matter did not bring a serious thought, to the growers lu re until very recently when they discovered that it was almost impossible to get suldcient hands to pick their strawberries. Now it appears from the subjoined letter and from other information we have received, that the labor at Con way and in the vicinity *vih entail a heavy loss on the growers, as without the hands, the crop will rot in the fields and canaoi be marUclod. Such condition can be prevented, and vigorous steps should have been taken long before mm to put a Stop to it. Th<?. following is the letter written to Mr. Watson: * 4'Conway. S. C., 5?J?(? I Ion. K. J . Watson, I mmigration Commissioner, Columbia, S. C. 44 Dear Sit : ? I wish to call your attention to a matte.* of vital im porumce to the truckers and fruit growers of this section, and a standing menace to a great industry. "We have a very promising crop of berries at this juncture, in Ilorry county and it seems as if fully one half of the crop will rot on the. vines for ihe want of hands to pick the fruit. On the other hand we have agents coining from North Carolina contracting for pickers in this State and taking them away by the ear load. 1 understand there is law against such work? Can we not enforce it? What promised to be a record breaking season to the fruit raisers here, seems at this moment to be sacrificed to a flagrant breaking of the laws of this Stale. "Please see what can he done, for while 1 am heart and sonl American I am first of all a citizen of Ilorry county, South Carolina. Yours very truly, J.
