witchcraft and the like appearing in
the papers To those friends liar- |
mon D. Grainger was well known. J
He saw them often and they knew '
his life likean open book. They were, i
therefore, surprised to hear such (
charges or even t he vile hints that 1
one could see by reading between j
the lines. They brand these things j
as false, and it is natural that they j
should because they loved the do- i
ceased and knew that there was ^
nothing of the kind in his life.
And there are those who are wel1 ,
acquainted with John Harris who t
will tell you that they have known c
him for years, some of them from
his early infancy. Those who know
him best deny that be has ever professed
any belief in witchcraft.
There was an effort made in the c
court to show that John Harris was
near the scene of the homicide the a
dav it occurred and a most desper- ^
ate effort was made to implicate him (
with the affidavit of Barnliill. It e
will be remembered by the lar#e 1
crowd of people in the court house j;
at the time that the Solicitor read c
several alii lavits of reliable people t
to show that on the day of the kill- ?
in# John Harris was ffshin# in ^
Kingston lake. Those who know J]
John Harris declare they do not be- i
lieve that he had any such coversa- c
tion as Barnhill sets forth in his ^
affidavit, and John Harris says himself
that he never used any language
of the kind. Those concerned i the
defense of Commander Johnson, it
appears, would not only blacken 'he
memory of a dead minister of i ho r
#ospel, but would holdup the count ;
itsel' to ridicule ov showini/ that it* l
people are superstitious, believers in
witchcraft. Any attempts they mav
make along this line will fail. The 1
county has been charged in the same n
connection as being filled with igno- ^
rant people, so that Watterman j
Booth, the foreman of the jury, we j
believe, in the Commander Johnson I
case, when called to the stand to be ?
examined as to his alleged miscon- j
duct while sitting as a juror in the j
case, said that he belonged to "that
ignorant class, but he would he
careful what he said." Those who c
heard him testify are ready to say r
that he is a man of the highest in- j
telligence and anything else but an
ignorant man. The man who charges a
igno?*ancc upon llorry county is off '
his base
And what has all this to do with j
the guilt or innocence of Com- ,i
mander Johnson? Nothing what- a
ever in the world. ^

society met a few weeks ago to elect

try and dc more for missions. We
ilso elected a delegate to our district
meeting which will convene at
Mullins Faster Sunday also the
Friday and Saturday before. Miss

delegate from our society. May

at the residence of Mr. and Mrs.
Fox worth's Wednesday evening to a
