On Monday morning Judge Gage
signed an order wquiring Commander
Johnson to bo brought cack to Conway
for sentence to bo again prom.unced upon
him. Mr. II. Grantl.i^ji wis dtt.iledns
special constable to bring him over and
lie arrived with him here on the train
Tuesday.
A. large crowd was noar the station to
see him leave the train and csiried to the
jail.
Ifo seemed to be in high spirits when
lie arrived and it is said threw jokes at
some parties while looking out of the
jail windows.
His attorney had given notice af a motion
for a new trial on after discovered
evidence. This dryw a crowd on the
first days of the \Veek hut up to a lato
hour on Wednesday the motion had not
been brought up for argument.
As we go to press the motion is being
argued the probability being that a new
trial will he refused.

llorulcl of n?xt week.

The Will of the People Overpowered
by House of Representatives
Mr. Editor: Most of your readers
know that I fought the new court
house and jail, the bridge across the
river and the dispensary until the
county got free of bonds and in better
circumstances, but the House of
ltepreseuiatives ran the bill over us
unjustly. If they had given Horry
the chance to vote on it they would
not have gotten it, but that is what
they knew.
But 1 want to know what are go-,
iug ?o be done with the old buildings
as nothing was said about them in
the new bill. Will the old buildings
be sold, or the material used in
help building the new ones? How
is that other counties can build new
court houses for about twelve or
fifteen thousand dollars and ours
must cost nearly forty thousand dollars?
Can those townships which
are already under railroad bonds go
under more larger onos? I do
believe that the prisoner that was
carried from Conway jail to Marion
iail was done to hc>ln to trot thn Kill
passed. I think our county is in
bad shape financially and it is going
to be worse for 1 think there is some
loose screws somewhere and it is
lime to hunt them up. What has
been done with the shortage matter
of Ij. I). Long while Courty Treasurer,
and many others? 1 think
the county would do well to look at'
ter such matters as these and put
men in office who have the fear of
God before their eves ar.d Vho will
help the farmer and the poor man
who have no education but who are
honest and are doing the best tnoy
know how to (Id. We want the man
who will rally for new ruilroads.
new factories, new enterprises of
every kind that will help the county
and not something for mere glory or
something that will be a dead expense,
as is the chaingang which is
more expense than it ;s profit. 1
think it would be well to do away
with the Supervisor and the chaingang
and if any one commits a crime
send tin m to the penitentiary. it
has ^ot so that the chaingang is a
better home for some people than
they had before the> went there. I
think it will be for the Representatives
to look after this matter..
We appreciate the Act that has
been taken up concerning the game
law. The birds is one of the best
friends a farmer has,
Now in the above I have only outlined
my views concerning matters
of nublic interest. 1 do not. inenn
to cast insinations upon any one and
hope no one will take otVense at what
I have written. But after the new
court house and jail is built if there
can be an\ of the forty thousand
dollars scraped together to start
those bridges across the river, then
how will they be finished? I will close
for this time, but one more word,
farmer friends, you may look for the
stock law at the next sitting of the
Legislature. Candidate.
Marion Notes.
Well, the health of the community
ia very good at present, there
being only a few cases of smallpox.
The people are very anxious for
the ground to get dry so they can
plow again.
There was a very sad death here
last Friday about 2 o'clock. Mr.
Samuel McClellon, one of Marion's
useful citizens, fell dead from his
buggy near Mr. W. It. Kodgers'
mail box. It was very shocking to
his friends.
The people are going to plant
large quanty of tobacco over here
this year.
Mrs. Nattie Dudley of this place
is very ill at this writing.
J. 15. Ilarrelson and daughter of
this place are in Hoiry on a visit to
relatives and friends. vVe would be
glad to see them in our neighborhood
again.
There is a very nice Sunday school
here now.
There is preaching at the Baptist
church every fourth Saturday and
"Su nday.
An interesting sermon was preached
at the Mullins methodist church
yesterday at II o'clock a. m.
Well I will not write much this
time in fear of the waste basket.

Stephen J. Lewis, of Joppa, Horry
County, was in town on business
yesterday. Mr. Lewis is one of
Horry's most properous and substanial
bus ness men. He was recently
elected a d;rector of the Merchant's
and Planters' bank of the

The Conway market will be open
for business the last of the week and
solicits the patronage of all

The Court of (lenor.il Sesionsconvened
here last Mondav morning,
JudgeLago presiding. The Judge
arrived in Conway on last Saturday
afternoon, but the Solicitor did not
come until Monday morning, as the
Legislature had just adjourned and
the Solicitor had oeen busy there up
to adjournment on Saturday.
The crowd in the town was as
large as usual and the court room
just us packed as over and just us
ina-Wjuato as over in size for the
accommodation of the spectators.
Judge Gu?e delivered an able
charge to the grand juiy in which
bespoke in high terms of the county
since ho was hero before, and he
congratulated t he people on the (act
that at last they were about to have
a new court house that would be in
keeping with the progress he saw
on every luvnd.
Witnescs were sworn for the
grand jury and then the dockets
were called.
J. C. Lewis was granted a new
trial in his appeal from the court
of Magistrate W . I<\ Holt.
The case of the State vs. Dave
Hryant for violation of the dispensary
law continued.
The ease against It. M. MeLueas
for disposing of pr< perty after levy
was tiol prossed.
After the recess for dinner the
grand jury returned true bills in
several cases that had been handed
out to them by the Solicitor.
Campbell Mishoe charged with
assault and battery pleaded guilty
to the charge.

were tried and the solicitor asked
for a verdict of" not guilty" as to
Honey Gauso on account of Iris blindness
and evident physical infirmity,
but William Brock in ton was found
guilty by the jury and sentenced to
18 months.
The court then proceeded with the
trial of S. B. McNubb charged with
larceny of live stock and the hour
for adjournment arrived before all
of the State witnesses had been
sworn.
TUESDAY
The solicitor proceeded with the
trial of S. B. McNabb who was represented
by B. W. Wait and I). T.
I'Anson. Just here defendant's
attorneys moved for a bench warrant
for defendant's witnesses on the
ground that they had been induced
to leave by unfair means* The
court signed the warrant and the
case held over until the witnesses
should be brought in.
Tee State vs. A. A Graham was
continued.
The State vs. J L. Boyd and G.
V. Stalvey was continued'on motion
of the Solicitor.
The State vs, Charlotte Simmons
charged with murder was con turned
on the ground that motion for a new
trial was to be made in behalf of
Commander lohnson and the Solicitor
did not cart to go into her case
until alter Johnson's case should be
(disposed of. The next case was the
State vs. I). P. Green obtaining
property under false pretenses. The]
defendant was representodby B. W

case against D. P. Green.
The grand jury made their final
presentment and were discharged.
The court then proceeded with the
case against S. B. McNabb who was
represented by If. W. Wait f). T.
I'Anson and it. B. Scarborough, the
solictor was assisted by B. M. Woodward
Esijr. The jury Imd notreturnd

The deer is playing out in our
section. Some our of neighbors went
out last Thursday driving and came

Friday and yot two more.

Tho Rev. Chas. Bullock met his
appointment at Tilly Swamp Saturday

John Gore and Sam Veresn of Littlo
River attended church here on
Sunday.

Lewis Randall of Little River
passed through here Sunday enroute
to Conway.
We take much pleasure in reading
Mr. Fleming's letters he ^ives
some very ^ood advice which I
think the farmers would do well to
take.
The youne men have organized a
prayer meeting for every Sunday
and Thursday nights, which we
hope will do inuch^ood.
Cyrus Bawsey is doing a good
work for the neighborhood and has
made inanv iriepcis since he has been

Health is generally good in this
community excepting a few who are
complaining of Uieirarm which they
say is very painful caused from vaccination.
Hrother Walter Todd failed to (ill
his appointment at IMeasunt Meadow
last Saturday and Sunday. We
were expecting tohear Hrother Todd
preach but for some reason he was
kept away for which we have not
yet learned.
We arc still having a very good
Sunday school at this place. The
Bible says train up a child in the
way it should go and when it gets
old it wont depart from it. So I
think there is no better place to
train a child than in a good Sunday
school. Let us all work for the
betterment of the young and rising
generation.

Floyd have said enough about the
book agent. I don't know anything
about these agents, but I do know
that there is not enough religious
books in our county but too many
books pertaining to vvordly things.
We have a good Sunday school at
Macedonia now. There is preaching
every Third Sunday by ltev.

men selected. All who spoke of the
appointments were fully satisfied with the
selection made and the memh rs of the
commission are Indeed men of high
standing in tlii> county and fal'y <|Uu)ilied
to discharge the dutissof their trust.
There has been much speculation as to
whether the n*\v buildings will occupy
the old sites or be placed on a new lot.
The members oT the commission when
consulted, said they were not prepared
to say as yet just what would he done.
Following is the subtance of the act by
sections:
Sec.1 1?The county hoard of commissioners
shall issue bonds to iho amount
of f10,000.00. If enough remains after
erection of the buildings, surplus to lie
used to bridge the Waccamaw near Conway,
and at Star Bin IT, and pay half o'
the cost of abridge across Fee Dee near
Jordanvllle.
sec. ii,? Special commission to be appointed
to carry out the act. Appointments
have already been made as above
stated.
Sec. 51. ? Provides for selling the bonds
and paying over proceeds to the treasurer

much about visiting, 1 work all the

In regard to cotton 1 claim to
know but little. I first break my
land ten to twelve inches deep, then
lay olT live inches apart then put
fifty cart loads of stable manure
and *150 pounds of fertilizers to the
acre. When my cotton begins to
break the ground 1 run around it
and work it every week until it is
