A number of witnesses were ex
amined and a mass of testimony
taken. The testimony was taken
down In shorthand by Mr. 11. N. Hal
linger, who recently acted as stenog
rapher at a special term of cjurt h
Hampton. The proceedings were ah
secret aud nothing was known of tin
testimony until the verdict of tin
jury was rendered.

It will be remembered that Reed went

January 13, and went to this woman'}house.
In the afternoon he cumc
down town and said he was sick, hid
btarted home but came back bscause
he was ill. lie told a friend he bellevi
Le had been poisoned and gave tills
friend some money to deposit in thi
bank, which was done. Pay sic Ianwere
at once called *n but he grew
worse and died about 0 o'clock the
next morning, the death oeing myster
icus.
The Bunch woman, whose arrest is
noted above, testified that Dickinson
visited her, also R?ed. T lat on the
Saturday mentioned Reed came to
house between 10 and 11 o'clock;
that shortly afterwards Dickinson
came in and gave Reed a drink of
whiskey outol a bottle whic i he took
from his pocket. That Dickinson
took none himself nor offered anybody
else any. Shortly afterwards seeing
some other people coming Dickinson
Jumped out of the back witadow and
ran off. Tnat Ried stayed at her
house about three hours or more. She
bald the same afternoon Dickinson
came back and-said to her: *'1 guess
I've fixed the now;" that Dickinson
had said to her about ten days
before that if Reed did not keep away
from her he was going to kill hino;
that after' she was arrested Diokln
son had ssen her at the j ill and told
her not to say anytblng#what he had
said about 11* ed.
As Boon as L) oklnson heard of the
verdict of the jury he did not wait
for a warrant to be sworn out, but at
once went and surrendered to the
sheriff It Is supposed that he will
apply for bond as soon as the testimony
can be transcribed and the motion
made. The correspondent of The
State says Dickenson Is the last man
he would have suspected of commit
ting such a crime. He comes of a
hightoned, honorable family. Ills

the best people of the community. It
is hard to believe that Clare Dickinson
poisoned Ran ltied, and it is only
fair to him to say that the chief wit
ness against him is a woman of the
lowest type of oh&racter.
She testified that Dlokenson was
paying her expenses and It seems that
while she had a room with a white
family the took her meals at a negro
