The House was Occupied By Mr.
and .Mrs. J. |. Ward, who Barely
Escaped in Time. Saved
Most of Furniture.
Last Saturday nitfht between the
hours of onn and two in llm
ing, thu small four room cottage
belonging to the Horry Land &
Improvement Company, on upper
Main street near the burroughs
school building, caught on fire and
was burned to ashes, Mr. and Mrs
J. I. Ward, the imm ites, barely,
escaping in tim.5 to save the greater
part of their household effects.
Mr. and Mrs. Ward were preparing
to move to Mr. Ward's former
home at Little Uiver, and they had
moved quite a lot of their personal
property down to the warehouse to
be shipped up the river. The stove
had been used for cooking dinner
and then taken down and moved to
the depot for shipping. The fire
could not have caught from a flue
Mr. Ward savs there were signs of
wood piled-up in rear of the house,
and he believes the house was fired
by an incendiary.
The lire alarm was answered
promptly and some good work was
done in fighting the spread of the

The homo of .1. K- McMillan caught
on fire several times and was badly
charred in places, but persistent
efforts saved it from the (lames.
The old school building would have
been in danger but the breeze was
blowing in the right direction to
save it from catching.

Mr B. L. Carter Weds Miss Mary
Carter of Daisy.
On January 11th M. W. Carter's
was the scene of a very pretty home
wedding, the bridal parties being
Miss Mary, the charming daughter
of Mr. Wm Carter, and Mr. tterry
L. Carter ti e younger son of Mr.
W. II. Carter. At 11 o'clock, the
hour set for the occasion the bride
aud groom to be, appeared on the
floor escorted by Mr. and Mrs. W.
E. Porter, Mr. W. II. Todd with
Miss Emma J. Carter, who witnessed
the ceremony quietly and pleasantly
performed by Elder II. II.
Harreison.
Shortly after the ceremony, dinner
was announced and all retired
to the dining room, where they
foundaladen table with the rarest
and the daintiest t<> itisfv the inner
man.

The following evening the crowd
gathered at the home of Mr. VV. H
Carter, where they soon Found
table laden with dainties and the

The bride and groom possess a
marked degree of intelligence and
have a nice little home whore we
wish them a long and happy 'ife,
and when their days are spent here

J. N. J curette last Friday of a
charge against a son and daughter
of John Doctor, a negro citizen, one
charged with cutting a cow, the
other with killing a turkey. Both
of them were fined.

Hall was begun last week by
the committee appointed to look .after

repairs so that the store can be

will be occupied by a new merchant

with the possibilities of Conway as a

as, charge i with highway robbery,
escaped through a window after
prizing the bars with a piece of iron
which they secured from the door of
the steel cages. Commander Johnson,
who was brought here some
time ago from Horry county for
safe keeping, but whose cell door
was not locked, walked out of the
cage, and also came near escaping,
but was prevented by Policeman
Smith, who happened to he passing.
All of this happened within a few
minutes after Jailer Crawford had
walked up town, he, no doubt,
thinking thai on. expensive, un
breakable (?) steel cages would hold
the prisoners until he could return.
Every efTort is being made to capture
t ae escaped prisoners and they
may be landed safely back again in
a few days.?The State.

Editor Herald: Please allow me
space in your valuable paper for a
few remarks in regard to the meeting
that was called some lime ago
for Ploytls. The meeting was a
complete failure. There were only
live <>l us present so we decided to I
try and have another meeting last
Saturday. 1 thought I would send
the call to you to publish, but after
thinking the matter over 1 became
so thoroughly disgusted at the poo
pic beino so careless about the first
call 1 decided not to bother you
with it.
So last Saturday came on and
five of us met a^ain, but not the
same five. Three of the first five
stayed at home and three new ones
came in. their stead.
Mr. Editor when we take into
consideration what the Cotton
firowers Association has done for
us in the last year, I can't see how
the people can be so careless We
don't have to wait to s~c if it will
boa success, it has proved itself
already so, and all I was sorry to
see in the treasurer's report in Columbia,
Horry was not mentioned as
having done anything to help on the
k'ood work.
Now I am sure there are but few
in Horry county who plant more
than ten acres of cotton to the mule,
but that is no reason why we should
not j fin in helping on the ?jood work

spoils of the conquest.
I recollect very well when I sold
cotton at 1 o i cents per pound,
when there was only an eleven bale
crop, and it would have been as bad
(or worse) this year if it had not
oeen for the good work of the Association.
I understand there is one man in
our township who said last spring
he was going to plant more cotton,
because everybody else was going
to cut and cotton would bring a
good price. Now that is unjust and
selfish, trying to make money at the
expense of other people.
Mr Editor, I do hate to be so far
| behind other people in any good
work. 1 hate to see this thing drop
where it is in I lorry county. It is
true 1 came from Marion county,
but I am now a citizen of Horry,
and expect to remain here, and
want to do all I can in every way I
can to bring this good old county of
ours to the front and leave it in much
better fix than I found it in when I
came here.
I say it without any fear of contradiction,
that there are some of
the best people in Horry that can be
found anywhere.
I 1 guess I have written too much
already and will stop for fear that
j this may go to the waste basket.

Christmas Tree at l-inklca.
On last Saturday night the hearts
of many school children at Einklea
v ere made glad. The large hall
was beautifully decorated, and by
seven o'clock the large lamp shed
forth its ray of light on a beautiful
holly tree heavily laden with berries,
toys and all manner of fruit. After
a few recitations were listened to,
came Santa Clans with a smaller
tree laden with candies and other
presents for the children. After
making his address and distributing
his prizes, Misses Gillie Watson and
M. E. Grainger assisted by Santa
Clans plucked the prizes from the
large tree to the delight of many.
This was followed by quite a number
of both old and young men racing
for the prettiest girl to promenade
with him through both isles of
the room forming a circle. The
time being live minutes to walk oil'
the many nicely dressed cakes that
had been arranged for that purpose.
One cake was sold to a stranger who
refused live dollars for it, and stated
that he would take it to his wife in
another State to show her what the
fair sex in I lorry could do.
The amount raised, $12.50, will lie
used to purchase a school library.
The patrons gave their sanction in
favor of a special district levy .
Much credit is due Prof. W. A.
Prince and Miss Lillio Watson for
the hard work they are doing in the
school, as well as the ladies who
furnished the cakes. Santa Clans.
Important I.cxislativc Measures,
A petition asking the member > of
the Legislature to provide for the
erection of a new court house and
jail and for the erection of bridges
across tin; VVaceamaw and Pee l)ee
rivers was being circulated in town
this week and was being signed by
nearly all to whom it was presented.
It is certain that some action will
betaken by I lorry s representatives
towards this enterprise which the
j countv needs so much and which has
been so long delayed. The public
may expect news from the Legislature
in regard to this matter in a
short time, for the representatives
I of the people cannot disregard the
long petition which will be sent to
them signed by so many of their
constituents*

Painfully Injured.
Mrs. W. I j. Mishoc was painfully
injured in the face a few days ago
while on thoMit.chel C.,en route to
Georgetown. As the boat wont too
near the shore the branch of a tree
punched in one of the glass windows,
| and one of t lie fragments was thrown
into Mrs. Mi shoe's face inflicting a
flesh wound in the cheek which bled
profusely. The cut was painful but
not particularly dangerous.

The attention was called to an
article appearing in tho daily papers
last week which said that two prisoners
made good their escape from
the Marion jail, and that a policeman
came up just in time to prevent
Commander Johnson from getting
away. Hotter bring him back in
Horry or lake him to Columbia
The work on the Eddy Lake ?&
Northern Railroad is progressing
well. This road will be a great
benefit to Horry when completed,
and our people should give the project
every encouragement.

I Cong, a Confederate veteran, was
I killed by his son, IJillio Cong. It
appears that two <>f Lone s sons got
into .a drunken light. The old man
undertook to stop it and them was
some words between him and llillio.
Hillic struck the old man one lick
on the head, then kicked him in the
abdomen, and ho was dead in half
an hour. The guilty one left for
parts unknown the next morning.
Arter lulling his father he threatened
to burn the house, but in this
last he was prevented. The above
is some of the fruit of liquor.
