THURSDAY NOV. 23RD, 1!H)5.
, 1
The recent higher prices of cotton '
has had the effect, according lo sonic c
writers, of raising the price of (
fanning lands in some sections of J
tlie State. (
The last day of this month will be |
Thursday and has been set apart as t
a day of thanksgiving. So far this 1
year has been one of unusual
prosperity and no great calamity or 1
disaster has visited Horry County. |
All over this county the farmers |
have harvested abundant crops, I
and the Herald believes they are in
better condition financially than thev
have been for many of tho years {
past. Thanksgiving services will |
likely be held at most of the churches. ;
and the people cannot better spend }
the day than by meeting at their !
respective places of worship and j
returning thanks to the giver of all c
good.
The first of December will begin 5
the seventh year in the history of '
the Horry Herald under its present
management. Looking back over ,
these six years of struggle in which
labor lias been expended to make '
the Herald as nearly what it aught *
to be as a county paper, we cannot ,
but feel thankful for the encourage- (
ment the paper has had. The en- i
crease from six hundred and forty
subscribers to the present large list J
of readers is a good showing, but j
the management prefers not to boast 1
too much of its own efforts, but to '
express its thanks to the many
friends who have stuck to the paper .
through thick and thin. It will be- I
gin the seventh year upon a stronger
basis than ever before. The paper
has more subscribers than it ever
hud before in all its history, and its
own building is well under way to
completion.
ONE MUST HELP THK OTHER. 1
It seems to be agreed, since the J
matter lias been somewhat aired, ,
that the hands of the town board of
health here are tied by the town
council, and they cannot take steps
looking to the proper sanitation of
the town without incurring expense,
that must be met and approved by
the council and paid out of the town 1
treasury. There is one fact that the
authorities should remember and
that is that the health board and the
council must be unison without friction
if anything is to be accomplished
in the interests of good health.
We may be wrong but we think
the council should treat any action i
taken by the board of health with !
that common courtesy that is due be
cause one public body by another not
assume the responsibility of being
boss of it all and over ruling and
amending to too great an extent.
Two of the members of the pres.
ent board of health are threatening
to send in their resignations f.ir
reasons arising out, of these mattci s
if they resign, they will do so, they (
have responsibility placed upon by '>
public opinion, while thev are power- '
loco in o tnnQk.?nrn rv /I
ivu.-j) iii i? uituoui t, ju uinuuai >
their duties as they should be dis- ;
charged. <
Now is the right time to clean up
the town and prepare for the hot ,
weather of next year. It will be too }
late to begin next spring when the I
warm weather is upon us. It is '
generally said that the county will
be visited again with the smallpox. .
in fact it is well know*?'that there is i
a case of it now here and there, of 1
a mild tvp#, but which is likely to (
become more severe later on. t
Preperations must be made in time j
to meet the conditions, and the town
should be ready at all times to cope
with epidemic diseases. '
Hut to accomplish anything the *
council must up hold the board in j
anything reasonable that it may see t
fair to do. The board has more important
functions to perform in the )
community than the council, Its a
action should be treated with all due I
respect, and have the encouragement
and support of the other
authorities of the town. By acting
in concert something can bo done
and good accomplished, by pulling at
cross purposes, there will be a
failure and the public will he the I
.sufferers.
