COTTON THIEVES.
NttGROES AT LORIS. STOLE COT- '
i;ON. CAUGHT BY HOUNDS. (
v
t
Cotton was Taken from Gin at Loris
and the Hounds Laid Crime at 1
Door of Hands who Worked
at the Gin. ^
The value of blood hounds in the
county is exemplified in a case oc- s
curriug recently at Boris, where '
hands at the gin of J. C. Bryant
Company took cotton and were trail- \
ed out by the hounds recently pur- (
chased by Supervisor W. K. Holt.
K vide nee has been gathered upon
winch the owners think they can *
bind over two of the negroes, and '
next Monday has been fixed as a
. time for the preliminary invesliga- (
tion. .
Mr. P. M. Lee was in charge of
^ the gin which is run at Loris by J.
C. ilryant Co.. and had no idea that I
some one was filching cotton from 1
the building, until he happened one (
day about two weeks ago, to (ir.d
two bags of cotton in a thicket near |
ihe gin hou e. This he took back to ,
the gin, but later he found some |
some more sucks i nilie swamp near
by and decided to watch these sacks
and as soon as they should be moved s
to send for the bloood hounds of Mr. 1
Holt and track out the thief. In a I
few lays the sacks had been moved,
and Mr. Holt sent for. He was ac- 1
companied by () K. Hickman, E. f
K Skipper and P M. Lee. The ?
dogs took the scent about 9 o'clock
on the morning after the cotton had
iHii'ii moved and 111 a short time follofted
the trail to the home of a no- '
,-gro who had been working at the glu 1
'Two different tracks had been dis
covered in the branch and the dogs t
v.vere put upon the other track and *
rsoon came to bay again at the hoi <> ;
of another negro hand. On one d
the trails the dogs found another lot
of five suc*s of cotton hid away in 1
the thicket.
The two negroes, Steven Bullock '
and Frank Cox, were given a preliminary
hearing, but as sufficient .
evidence had not been furnished the i
magistrate continued the case until i
next Monday when the hearing will
bo resumed. Since the first hearing ,
Frank Cox has seen the prosecute
and made an arrangement so he ^
can turn States' evidence and get
out of it. (lis testimony lias not
yet been taken, but it is believed it 1
will implicate nearly all the hands <
'that have been working at the gin. >
"Steven Bullock, although he was
tunder bond for his appearance at |
the trial next Monday, has run
away, and it is not expected that he ,
will appear at the hearing.
In trailing out these negroes the
dogs passed a place where a section <
force had been at work some time, I
and kept the trail through the mill 1
yard where many huuds had been <
passing and re-passing all day, with- i
out losing the trail. This ail shows 1
that the dogs have been well trained 1
and that it is worth something to
the people to have them in the county
where they can be used in case of
emergency. J

Editor Herald: ? Will yon please (
'allow me space in your valuable
paper for just a few words.
I notice an article in last week 's 1
issue from Mr. 13. M. Stevens as present
over seer on this section of '
the road. He states that he is will- '
ing for the Supervisor to conio and 1
inspect his work. As to the work 1
he lias done it is alright so far as I (
know, but he must have by some '
means, I do not know what, thought s
that I was going back on his work.
This is all together a mistake, I only ,
meant the work that had not been (
done. I
As to the work on this road it has <.
nui? ueuu uonu, neiuier in me proper ]
way nor the necessary amount. This \
is too plain to be disputed, plainer t
c tlian I can put it in words. ,
And again 4Kittio" did not spend \
all of his money when he paid his |
road tax, neither is he growling
about it, but he wishes that it could
go as it should for the benefit of the
road instead of some private party,
and "Kittio" and his friends would .
like to know that it could be lookod J
after.
Very truly yours,
G. C. Skipper. ]

It is publicly believed by the
