WOULD IT OK (NOT?
Thehk are differing opinions as to
whether Horry County would be
benefitted by the extension of the
Conway, Coast & Western Railroad
to Marion, but the general impression
among the people living in the
country has been that the completion
of the road through to Marion
would be a great thing for
Horry. When the road was sold
out to Mr. Chad bourn some months
ago, it was generally believed that
; the transfer meant a sale to the Atlantic
Coast Line Railroad coniI)il!)V.
It W!vu flaimn/1 ??" 1'""*" -
j . - - .. uiwitiiuv. t> u niiuw lUJli
how true, that the name of Mr.
Chadbourn was used as a blind, the
Coast Line being entirely unknown i
in the deal with the former owners
of course. These were only flying
reports, there is no way to prove
their truth except by circumstances
and things taking place
since*the former deal was made.
The fact that Mr. Chadbourn has
so soon sold out to the A. C, L.,
\ tends ?o some extent to show that '
\ there was at least some foundation '
for tile report that the Atlantic
J Coast Line was contemplated in
J?orae way in the deal. No reasons
have been stated for the sale of Mr. '
Chadbourn to them, it is not even
published that he found out he had
made a bad deal and just decided
to uuload it on others. Laying
aside the question as to whether the
completion of the road to Marion
would benefit or injure Horry and
Conway, it looks very much as if
the Atlantic Coast Line thought it
would be an advantage to them to
own this new road. And the only
reason they would like to own it is
to prevent its going on to Marion
and creating competition i? freight
rates to Conway. They would certainly
not buy it with any hope of
making any morfoy out of the investment
other than in keeping
down competition. It is argued by
some that the extension of the road
to Marion would carry Horry people
with their money the other way.
Wo are not so sure it would have
this effect. On the other hand we
hold that the completion of the road
would bring many Horry people
here, who at present owing to the
better ways of travel, do their trad*
ing at Marion and Mullins. There
is a section of the county so near to ,
Marion that thofpeople naturally go
