and 1 am very sorry that I cannot
be there in dear old Horry to vote.
1 hope that the people will turn out
and vote the curse out of the county.

that Horry is not the only county
in this bin world that is linhtinn the
whiskey traflie, for this county, (Hutnam
county' Kla.,) has ordered an
election to bo held on the 2t5th. of
this month to yive the people of this
county the chance to vote "whiskey'

I low strong tobacco smokers smell;
Who love to smoke their pipes so well,
That for tobacco they will sell.
You can tell when they are near,
Though not a word do you hear;
They love their pipes so very dear,
Their breath is stronger every year.
They clean their steins with a wire,
Then till the hole and put in lire;
And smoke until it does expire,
And never do they seem to tire.
Sometimes some nine or ten,
You see collected in one company;
And every one is in full glee,
They must have a smoking spree,
Again within their neighbor's door,
They will tell of pleasures o'er;
While spitting on the hearth or floor,
Until it spreads a foot or more.
When they are sad they will chew,
Much more than they have before;
And their troubles are not over,
Tobacco makes their tongues sore.
Often are the cuds so large within,
That juice runs out down the chin;
On the shirt we see the filth again,
The mouth too full to hold it in.
Some ladies dip tobacco snuff,
While others have a pipe and puff;
Some others chew the nasty stuff,
Until their mouths look bad enough.
If people had the money lent,
That for tobacco they have spent;
So many need not have to rent,
Hut live at home in much content.
They could pay their preacher well,

Inviting them with God to dwell.
The preacher might quit the weed,
From such expense be ever freed;
And leas money then he would need,
And in a nice example lead.

As if he owned all Canaan land.
His good wife might quit the stuff,
Lay down her pipe and her snuff;
Their pathway would not be so rough,
And all their children have enough
Give one half that you spend for
tobacco to the poor orphanage and
thev can have a feast too, and help
to educate them and God will bless
