It seems that "No Dispensary" is the saying of the day. Some oven go so far as to say they will have no whiskey at all, which will never be. We lind in history that rum was imported from Kuropc in the early settlement of America, here it lias been ever since, and here it will remain as long as time lasts. Because some men get drunk and curse, fight, and disturb a whole community, whiskey is u> blame. We can ston this conduct by enforc iiiw liiu liiw, mucn easier than we can rid t he State of South Carolina or even Horry county of whiskey. We should lirst tind in what way is it best for us to have the sale of whiskey. If it is dispensary with slops lets have them, or if it is high license bar rooms with pure whiskey lets have them. And every man we tiii* 1 that is so boozy he don't care for violating the laws of our State, prosecute him, and 1 believe it will not be such a curse and that our county will also be able to meet her expenses. H. Ii. C. Poplar. I lealth of the community is good. Fodder pulling is about over, but cotton picking will soon be the talk of the day. Mr. and Mrs. David Shelley visited their sister, Mrs. Jettie Hlanton, on last Sunday evening. Mr. and Airs. John F. Roberts were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. M. N. Hlanton on last Sunday. Mr. ( )11 V Martin had t miufrnO im? to lose a package between here and Nichols, S. C, some few days ago, containing two pair of pants and some other articles. Wo hope that the dispensary will get knocked in the head on election day for we know it is a hurt to us. Remus, ? ?? ~ Hand. Editor Herald:?1 will write a few lines to your paper. Health of this community is good at present. Mr. F, W. II. Edge is still very ill. Fodder pulling is about over, and cotton picking is the work now. There was a quiet marriage at the residence of the bride's father, Mr. E. T. Ricks, Miss Dell Ricks to Mr. Arch Chestnut, all of Horry, We wish thorn good success in life Wo are glad to have the privilege of voting on the whiskey question. Editor Herald -Please allow mo space in your paper for a few remarks as 1 havn't seen anything from this section lately Fodder pulling is the order of the day, though the weather lias been very unfavorable for the past two weeks. Dr. Kufer is having a ^reut deal i of work to do, as there is lots of sickness in this section, though no new cases of small pox to report. 11 is very shocking to the community to hear of the sad illness of old uncle Daniel Owens, though we hope him a speedy recovery. Miss Jennie Cook of the Don^ola section and Miss Hertlia Martin of Myrtle Peach spent Tuesday of last week with Miss Cccia Owens. Mr. liobt. M. I iewis, a prosperous farmer i living in the Cowhnd section, was here a few days aoo an I told your scribe that lie was workioy against the dispensar\, and that he knew of only one man in his section who would support it. There is such a rapid chance of sentiment in favor of a new court house and jail, until wo think that pressure will he brought to b *ar on legislative delecui inn ! > wnimiii ?i>.. ' - v" 1,1 question again to thequaliliou voters The country people who were much opposed to the idea, some time ago, now seem to realize thai it is a pub lie necessity, and will vote almost solid in this section for the court house and jail. R A. Watts of the BucUsville section sent your scribe a lot of pears a few days ago. They were muck appreciated and tin4 finest that we have soen this season. Mr. R. F. Woodward, who is visit ing relatives hero, will leave Monday for hi? homo at Bayard, Rla. lie says that we have made great prog- : ress since ho was hero last. S. F. Shelly, post master at Virgo, was in town Monday. Dr. J. S. Dusenbury was here Monday evening on a visit to IJ. A. Dusenbury who has been quite unwell for sometime. The farmers are quite busy now i picking cotton and mowing hay. We 1 are of the opinion, although the crop is very short, that the cotton crop will be very remunerative to the farmers as the present indications point to a good price for the staple. Our school house which is be:ng ! built by contractor W. L. Singleton is rapidly Hearing completion, and i when finished will he the finest school building in the township. What has become of "Silas of Bayboro?" Wc want to hear from him now and find out. what is going on in Hayboro. Come old fellow and give the dots. Forecast. ?? Hayboro. Health generally good. Doctor Phipps has opened up a general line of merchandise at the Moore stand near here, and is doing a lively business. Wo bad a shooting scrape near hero last Saturday in which H. J. Graham wus painfully, but not dangerously hurt. Graham and Walter Itabon had a , few. words and hitched for light, and Graham got little the, best of the game and whipped Kabon, but none too much, and when Graham lot Itabon up, Itabon slipped to (Iraham and shot him with a US Smith & Wesson, the ball striking Graham on the chin bone, ranging downward . and was cut out by Dr. Norton from the neck. (Jraham is considerably better. Whiskey or dispensary stuff was ut the bottom. You see that kind the State sells is the kind to make you crazy. Kill out the cu rse: A good friend to temperance people. I IDENTS. I j Eldorado. Th? most of the farmers have be- , gun to pick cot lor. expecting to ; realize a good price. ' There has been some change in the school trustees of 4!)th district, j It was a great advantage to the ; patrons. The Alligator school is 1 progressing well under the careful management of N. M. L. t Gere <?f the Neck section made a l trip in the Daisy section recently. I). R. Royals and brother, J. M. Royals visited S. A Gore Sunday. Mr ICditor I see in the paper where some of the correspondents ( want all to write their views on i the dispensary question. L see where i many says it is a disgrace to edu- c eate your children with the dispen j sary profits. riven the preachers i of the gospel say it is a disgrace. .. Don't they receive tin* gambler s ( money? Don't they receive the ( drunkard's money? I am opposed i to drunkenness as much as any man in the Slate. Doing away with the t dispensary will not do away with i drunkenness. It is my heart's d? - I sire that the Legislature make a < law, that if a man gets drunk line him #2f> or (>0 days on the chain gang and the prosecutor to get $f> If a woman gets drunk life imprison- 1 ment, for she is not tit to be with I white or black.
