"TIHTHSI>.\~Y' AIJGT'17rTf I!>05," Your town is coming to the front sure enough' is the remark made by every visitor to Conway -now a days' Dusiuoss men of Conway should lieed the suggestion so often made 1 hnl wr.'it ilia teivn nenrlb ne\w innrn than aiv thing else, in a business way, isihaaufaeturing establislunent of evei'y kind. The dispensary investigating committee had an easy time so long as their inciting in Spartanburg was secret and the affidavits only taken down in/vriting. The witnesses arc very sl/w to testify in public. It i/ no use to wondor these days at lira price of lands. The rise in the price of real estate in this county during the last few years has been wonderful and the indications are thkt prices will still go higher. It would have been bettor to have the election on the question of the dispensary during a regular campaign year. It would compell the candidates to declare themselvos and make it more, iiitorostincr tlinn it can be at the present time. With a little foresight and precaution the small pox could be stamped out in the summer months. No cases have been heard of lately and any section of the county, but unless care is exercised the disease will be likely to break out again next winter. The disclosures brought out last week at Spartanburg by the dispensary investigating committee, is but a fair example of the rottenness existing at many other points where they have been too sharp to let any of it get out. Sometimes small accidents lead on to great discoveries. Senator Hlea.se must have felt small when certain things were testified to in the public court room at Spartanburg last week, showing beyond a doubt that he, a member of the committee itself, had been connected with some matters very in consistent with the duties of his pusition as a public otticer and Legislator. Since the out-break of yellow fever in New Orleans, other large cities on the coast have gone to work and thoroughly cleaned up putting themselves under stricter sanitary regulations than they ever- had bofore. These strict regulations should have been in force all the time and perhaps the desease would never have obtained a foot-hold. While there is no pestilence, is the proper time to prepare for it and it will be longer in coming. The colums of the Herald are always open to the people of the county for the discussion of any public question of interest, but it docs not favor controversies. Those who wish to discuss the dispensary situation are at liberty to do so, but with the restriction that long controversies will not be tolerated no more now than ever. When correspondents pitch in to try to injure one another they ary lure to mf&g enemies not only for themselves but for the' paper itself. A hint to the wise is suffi vicu t. Some tobacco farmers make the mistake of planting the weed too often in the same land. It is well known that tobacco requires something from the soil that ordinary crops do not seem to take from it, and when the weed-has been planted for two successive years on the same land, this peculiar quality becomes exhausted and the crop docs not de well even for the second year. New land is the best for a tobacco crop, regaining good for several years, but when the old land is used for the production of lobocco, the same land should not be used for tobacco without a rest every alternate year. 1 I HaISC it at home. We always regret to see * farmer i buy ingany article that can be easily raised on . his ^Tunh. One reason that some farmerfc fail to succeed in their calling is that they have too little to sell and have to buy too many things that they could easily make in their own fields for home comsumptioil. As a rule the more successful farmer is the one who lias something to sell every time he comes to town but at the same time has plenty left at home. Kvett in the dead of the winter when no crops can be raised, he brings hams or fresh pork to sell in the towif market, and some of them have plenty of corn and field peas to supply the local market. It is a mis- : take for any farmer to neglect to | 1*51 ISO nlonl V fif Uiir.li nu l?r? I v VJ */? k.Miv,ii VI *'J?1 (%O LIU 1 needs for his home use. The planting of a money erop and seeing to its good cultivation to the utter neglect of the food crops that he will 1 have to use at home, and will have to buy by reason of the neglect, is a mistake that costs the small farm- i er no little. It is a fact noticeable on every hand as one travels through Horry County that the farmers are more and more, waking up to the fact 1 that the place for a farmer to live and board is at home" and that the more he has to sell, leaving plenty for his home use, the more he will become independent and thrifty. Some years ago the only money crop raised in Horry County was cotton, and every one remembers > how hard it was during some of those years, when some of the farm- i ers staked their all on cotton, neglecting their crops for oome supply, and in the fall, the staplo went to five cents a pound. Those hard times in the long run accomplished more toward teaching the farmers how to live at home than any thing , that over happened to them. It : showed them that while they could 1 raise cotton and live as long as it brought a good price, yet when it went to nothing, they could neither eat the cottou.it self nor sell it for 1 sufficient to supply the farm with , provisions. Later on tke raising of 1 tobacco was started and thus the | farmer had a new crop that he i could raise as a money crop and one ' that comes olT earlier in the year than cotton, bringing returns when the farmer most needs them. At ^ this time in some sections where i there Sire f.rnnenni'tof inn f.in'iliUno II .. W|,~. vi.u.v/.. .UVill.U.W, truck raiseing lias become an industry, and the farmers have a third source of income. Thus they are learning to diver- j sify their crops and while making plenty to use at home, they can have something to sell at almost every season of the year. There has been some complaint lately about a ditch that runs in rear of the Kingston Hotel, Norton Drug Co., and other buildings on Main Street. It appears to have no outlet whatever, but stands full of filth and stagnat water all of the time, creating a smell that is not pleasant. As to whether this nui sauce has been called to the attention of the town authorities or not the Herald is not in formec] but some body who is interested should see that this matter is brought before the council at once or at least the board of health and some steps taken to have the annov* ance removed. It is dangerous I to the health of the town at any time and especially at this season of the year. It is reported that the odor irorn this ditch reaches out to Main street when the breeze is blowing that way. No one doubted that there would | be much corruption disclosed by the ( investigations of the committee appointed by the Legislature to investigate the dispensary, but the evidence brought out at Spartanburg at the meeting of tho committee last week, heads anvthincr that has v?t CF J WV boon brought out against the officers of the system. It appears that one leading newspaper of Spartanburg sold out for money and changed from an active lighter of the dispensary to one of its best organs. This ' newspaper incident was not only a surprise to the people of that county but a surprise to the wholo State i Just as we have said from the begin, i ning, the dispensary has been in bad ( hands, and the system has received its worst blows from its supposed friends. If you are troubled with dizzy . spells, headache, indigestion, con- J stipation, Hollister's Rocky Mountain Tea will make you well and keep you well. Tf it fails, get your money back.
