The cry of Conway just now is for more manufacturing enterprises. The Herald would be glad to hear talk of a cotton factory. Notiii.no has been heard from the electric light proposition in some time. What is the matter? Conway wants light. The work of curing tobacco is very toilsome and taxing, but the farmers can stand it in good heart when they get good prices for their weed. The farmers have so far this year obtained good prices for tobacco. There is every likelihood that good prices will prevail throughout the season. This is the season when the town cart should be kept busy Watermelon rinds and the like should not be allowed to accumulate for even a fraction of u day. One side of Main street will soon be full of buildings adding much to the appearance of the town. Improvements are needed to lill up the vacancies on the opposite side. Fa km eks make readier sale of their products in Conway of late years and at far better prices. They used to peddle watermelons from house to house in the town and their sales were very slow. They now sell ont their loads in bulk to the merchants and the melons are resold the same day at a fair profit. Thus the growth of the town helps the farmers. Tiikke is nothing more gratifying in Horry county today thau the increased intermit the people are taking in the cause of education. New school districts are being laid olY from time to time and new and better school houses are being erected. In many sections of the county special levies have been made in order to have longer terms of the public schools. We are glad to see all this and to hear talk of still doing more. It is one of the best signs of the times. Tiik authorities are determined to look closely into the atTairs of all the big insurance companies owing to the disclosures recently caused by the trouble of the Equitable. That much rottenness will be exposed by this investigation no one hardly doubts. The insurance business is a large one and unscrupulous men are doubtless in it for the large amount f\f mnnntr iKeu />?? ' ? Keith Dargan was considered one of the best business men of that county, and ranked among t he best as a man of good judgment and foresight. Having great confidence in him, his friends at Darlington and elsewhere never hesitated about putting in their money with him in the Independent Cotton Oil Co., and later in the Darlington Trust Co. Had he 4 conducted this large business in a business way and as he was capable of doing?if he had not allowed the frenzy of getting rich quickly get the better of his judgment, the enter* prises he started would have been doing well today and he would have been a living man. fie risked the i \ money that hud boon advanced in | his enterprises by ins friends in modern gambling, though it may not always be called by that name, and lie lost. It is a warning to many others that they will do well to heed. Many curious things have taken pluco at Darlington in relation to this matter, such as the body being guarded at the house, refusing to let the grave be opened" ulVM' grave suspicions of hi| death had been circulated and the family knew it, refusing to let the doctor or coroner touch the body, tlie question of hypnotism and many other things, taken in connection with the strange conduct of lVgram Dargan, tin? brother, and all this is enough to start, the tumors and tales about the supposed dead man being seen in New York and the like. It will turn out that the whoie trouble proceeds from sin and wrong doing. Tiik agitation of a movement for a new court house and jail should be kept up without cessation throughout this year so that the members of the Legislature can arrange for an election at the next session, should it be decided to put the matter be fore the people again. There are many who would oppose it and blame the Legislators for going ahead and i passing this act without leaving it to the popular vote of the people, ' Since the matter has been brought , up again it is found that there are ; many in favor of it who bitterly op- { posed it before. Let those who want the new buildings keep on with < the agitation of the movement and another year will see arrangements made for their erection. There is 1 1. ! 1 ! The writer went further and s stated that Myrtle Reach had no ' I church or Sunday School and that j this was a matter of great regret. ' There is truth and much food for thought in what the writer says 1 about this matter. Innocent pleasure is good enough in its place, but the cause of religion should never be neglected at a summer resort nor indeed at any other place. A. Burroughs, head of the great house of Burroughs & Collins, at Conway, was a visitor to Georgetown last week. While here Sir. Burroughs talked frankly to The Carolina Field about the recent sale of the Conway, Coast & Western railroad of which his firm was principal owner. What Mr. Burroughs says is always reliable; when he makes a promise he fulfills it; when he announces a plan, the plan is sure to go; he makes good. After discussing the situation frankly Mr. Burroughs said that the sale was a good one and that he was thoroughly satisfied with it: that lit i lino contracted with Mr. Chadbourn to build fifteen miles of road accord ing to the original specifications and this would be done. He did not require Mr. Chadbourn to build the road on to Marion as he felt that this would hamper Mr. Chadbourn in his . future plans, as in that case he might be forced to perform a task directly contrary to his interests. Accordingly Mr. Chadbourn is free to build the road on to Marion or to any other point that he may select. ; This gives him a freehand audit is ' necessary for him to have a free hand in dealing with so largo a question. Mr. Burroughs expressed the un qualified opinion that the people of Marion will get the road if they go I about it in the right way. It iscer- ' tainly up to them to say whether they 1 want it. Should any other town outbid Mar- ion, then of course Marion could not expect to get the road. Mr. Burroughs himself is more largely interested in the development of Horry county than any one else could possibly be, as his holdings embrace about one-fifth the entire arej^ of the county, and he has every reason to avoid being bottled. Mr. Burroughs was gratified at ( the continued advance of Horry county. Progress is still rapid and there is no abatement of the strides j Conway has been making in the past ' few years. Everything is on the up . Xf ; U, ' f4f_ ijJ ' ' tfV . i^rade. One of the most pleasing effects of that progress is of Conwav on the main line of the Western Union Telegraph Co with the connections with Richmond, Augusta and other central |>oints. Mr Burroughs doev not hesiate to attribute this to the work of Mr. James Henry Rice, Jr., on the field last \ ear, and says the business men of Conway duly appreciate it. Myrtle I teach is havi nw a fine season and has now become a resort known from one end of 1I10 country to the other by the traveling public. As to the new passenger boat, both lie and Mr, I). T. McNeill are reticent, but admit thit it will be ready before long. They were told of the intentions of Georgetown's business men to join with them in celebrating the event of opening Waecamaw river to passenger travel and both thought it a lino idea and a splended opportunity to advertise Waecamaw river, and to get the claims of this noble stream before the government. Mr. Burroughs is looking well and is spending the summer at Myrtle I teach with his family, lie return! lo Conway P'rulay. A Toucliinjc Story. is the saving from death, of the ba by girl of Goo. A.
