L. Defxiry , an aged Confederate
Veteran, was reported as ill here
last week and he and family in a
destitute condition. A petition was
written up and in a few hours the
sum of ten dollars and quite a lot of
groceries were raised and sent to the
distressed family, His only means
of support has been his manual labor.

week for the foundations of the new
store building of Col. C. P. Quattlebaum
on Main street next door
to the Hardware Co. K. II. Leslie
is the contractor. It is said that
Col, D. A. Splvey will ero long bogin
the erection of some now brick
buildings adjoining the one of Mr.
Quaillobaum 's.

Adrian, presided in the magistrate's
court, hero last Saturday. The ease
on docket was that of The State vs.

Mrs Henrietta tMvis Dead.
' I learts were made sad here last
Friday morning by the announcement
of the death of Mrs. Henrietta
Davis, the esteemed wifenf the Uev.
J. C Davis, preacher in charge of
the Conway circuit and who has resided
here with his family at the cir
cuit parsonage in the upper part of
the town. She was taken ill several
days ago and tdatives were sent
after, her mother Mrs. Mary Patrick
and Iter sister. Mrs. McDonald, both
of Darlington, S. C., arriving at her
bedside on Thur-ala.V.* afternoon.
While she was very sick, vet it. was
not thought to be "so serious until
shortly before the end. -She died
at about 8 o'clock on Friday morn
ing. The ?ud ne ws was telegraphed
to her father and brother who also
reside at Darlington, and who ar
rived on Friday. She is survived by
eight children and her husband.
Since the family moved here last
winter, they have made many friends
who deeply sympathize with the
bereaved husband and children.
The remains were taken to Darlington,
her former home for inter
mont.

A petition was being circulated
this week and numerously signed,
addressed to the commissioners of
internal improvements, asking them
to reconsider their action in adopting
the plan set forth in the report
of the civil engineer, and which was
thoplan that the engineer stated
he did not recommend. The report
of the commissioners was made pub
lie last week, and the plan which it
was stated they had adopted, began
at once to arouse dissatisfaction on
the part of many of the citizens.
The plan proposed will cost about
$10,000.00 and will only take oil the
storm water that falls on the streets
and which is almost all carried away
by uaturnl drainage. The outcome
of it all is the petition which has
been widely circulated and numer ously
signed showing that sent is
mcnt is against the plan proposed.
The Picnic a Success.

The picnic was a grand success.
Thcro was nothing to mar the pleasure
of any one except the rain about
> dinner time. The table was tilled
with good things such as the ladies

dancing.
