?The Hal. L. Duck Company,
who have another large advertisement
in this issue of the paper, will
soon he ready to put in their stock
of furniture and house furnishings
in the new store building just Mulshed
up next door to their already
large building on the corner. They
believe in printer's ink, but their
ads hardly tell half that you will see
by visiting then* corner.
?The contractor began the erection
of a new brick building for the
Hank of Horry last Monday morning.*
It will bo two stories high
adjoining the present building of the
bank, and the front will be of white
pressed brick to correspond with
the older building. It will be but a
little while now before Hint. s.wl?? nf
Main street will bo full of brick
buildings and hardly a vacant lot on
that side of the square.
?Sample copies of the Carolina
Field, edited by James Henry Rice,
Jr., at Georgetown, were received in
Conway last week. The first issue
contains twelve pages tilled with
very interesting articles concerning
eastern Carolina, besides much local
matter and general news. If Georgetown
is looking for advertising she
is likely to get plenty of it through
this medium. All that is needed is
the right kind of support from the
business men of that town.
?Dr. (J. S Diets, who has recent
ly opened dental rooms in the Spivey
building has a card in this issue.
He has had many years experience
as a dentist. When spoking a location
he accepted Conway as a place
with a future, and a place where any
level-headed business man is sure to
succeed.

a short but eloquent speech introduced,
Col. Armstrong of Charleston,
the orator of the occasion. Col.
Armstrong paid beautiful tributes to
the heroes of the lost cause, and his
lecture was full of wit and sparkling
humor, holding the close attention
of the audience from beginning to
end.
The last number on the program
was "Dixie" in which the audience
was asked to join

Adventure of a Chicken.
W. J. Dunn, one of our farmers
who lives on the other side of the
Waceamaw a few miles from Coxo's
Kerry, while banking up potatoes,
imprisoned a chicken that happened
to slip into the pit unknown to him.
When the pit was opened five weeks
and a day afterwards, the chicken
walked out just as full of life as ever.
The only sign noticed of any
loss by reason of its confinement,
was its inability to crow, though it
attempted it and failed to its evident
distrust.
Conway is Attractive,
What is it that makes Conway so
attractive to the people from all seelions
just now? The people of the
town are beginnint/ to turn their
money into public enterprise, there
is an opportunity there for a man
who wants to make something of
himself. Of course that opportunity
exists in all towns of this country
but the attraction is very much
greater when, in the slang expression
of the day, "There is something
doing." Something doing when the
people who have money, whether it
be a big bit, or a little bit, turn it
into the channels of trade and industry.
Conway had this money
before, but you never heard of anyomt
throwing up a good job to go to
Conway a few years ago. It has
been only since "something was
doing" there that pooplo began to
trek over this Pee Pee country,
larger and richer towns go to Conway.

Hands at Work,
Up to this time there has been no
change in the car situation, and only
two or three refrigerator cars
havo readied CJonway during the
past week, only enough to contain a
fraction of the large amount of the
strawberries grown in the vicinity.
But the growers around Conway and
other points along the railroad have
oeen picking their berries just the
same and bringing them to the depots,
where they have received receipts
for them from the railroad
company. There are| to cars in
which to ship this fruit but the
growers will not be the losers. They
will be paid markot quotations for
their berries later on, whether the
berries over reach the markets or
not. The transportation companies
will have to foot the bills because
they are entirely responsible for all
of this trouble.
Most of the berries have been
hauled away in box cars and placed
along the main lino at other points
to await refrigerator cars that have
never turned tip

Yesterday was Memorial Day and
there was a reunion of all of the
old soldiers of Horry?Horry 's survivors
of th*3 lost cause. They, with
the sons and daughters of veterans,
and many who were neither voter
ans, nor sons or daughters of veterans,
met here yesterday, all in memory
of those who have passed away.
Conway had a large crowd on her
streets yesterday, and it was a large
crowd that witnessed the parade
and other exercises of the occasion.
Following is the program, which

One feature of the day not appearing
on tho program, was the unveiling
by the local camp, of the
Woodmen of the World, of the monument
erected by the camp in memory
of tho late sovereign Walter E.
Porter. This was announced to
take place at 1 o'clock and at about
that hour the members of the camp
met at the Kingston Hotel and
I marched to the cemetery of the
Presbyterian church where the
monument was erected last year.
The beautiful ceremony was con
due ted by the ofiicers of the camp in
the presense of a large crowd of
people, after which an oration in
memory of the departed member
was delivered.
John Rob Drake of Darling ton
was present and acted as Master of
Ceremonies. He arrived hero last
week for the purpose of getting in
members and awakening new life in
the old members of the camp. During
the last few months he has put
in some of the hardest wpyk pf his
life and the. people at Conway have
been impressed with the beauties of
Woodcraft, one of the largest and
most inlliential orders of the prosant
day. Mr. Drake will hold another
meetingof tho camp tonight and
quite a number of now applicants
will be initiated into the mystrics
of the order.
I.ittlc Girl's Sudden Death,
The many friends of Capt and
Mrs. R. (i. Dusenbury were stricken
with griof and sadness last Friday
morning When they heard of the
death of their little nine year old
girl, Ine/.. She was unwell for a
day or two during the week preceding
her death tqt returned to
hor otudies the first of last week.
There was no thought of any serious
illness until Friday. She was taken
with what appeared to be a slight
illness about Wednesday of last week
and seemed to he hptlei- eojne hours
before her death. There was a sudden
change for the worse ar.d she
died at H o'clock oh Friday. Capt.
Dusenbury was awa} at the time
