WOODWARD, Editor and Manager. THURSDAY A PL. 27th 1005. The damage to truckers last week from frosts was serious, especially iu some sections. No more frosts are expected this season by the weather forecasters. * * * IIoituY county now has more lum> her companies than she ever had before. At the present rate at which they aro cutting up the timber trees a fow years will see the merchantable timber all gone. * 1 * * The organization to light the low price of cotton has had some effect but it is doubtful that it has resulted in reduction of acreage to such au extern, as will Help prices next fall materially. * * * Tub movement for abridge across the Waccnmaw river at Conway for the convenience of people on both sides of the river is gaining strength ervey day, and the more there is said about the matter the more anxious the people are becoming to have the bridge. The paper contained a communication strongly endorsing it last week Another makes its appearance this week. This bridge is needed and it should be built. * * * It is predicted that May 10th. will see as large a crowd of people in Conway as have gathered together here for sometime, the occasion being the reunion of the veterans of the conuty and the carrying out of a special program designed for their entertainment and the enteitainment of other people who will come along to he present and tako it all in. It will be pleasant to sec the old soldiers of I he lost cause meeting together and shaking hands over fond memories of past associations. All tho county is invited to turn out and everybody will be made welcome. * * * til VI: I S M:\V ULILDINC.S, Tim letter of Jlon. Ifobt. B. Scurborough in our last issue bringing to mind again the necessity for a new court houseand jail for this county, states, that in the belief of the writer, the people would now endorse the movement for these buildings, if the subject v.ere properly presented to them, 'hough they once had the opportunity of voting on the ques tion and voted it down. This statement is undoubtedly true. An act was passed by the Legislature submitting this question to the people of the county and they voted it down, saying by their votes that they did not want a new court house and jail. We thought over the matter from every point of view, and we decided then that the only reason that could cause the people to vote against {1 Mhur nunrf lirnion n?wl !..il ? ?? *?X/ ? vwu k UVKOU i411 \4 jilll WilO the fact that they had not been brought to see the great necessity for these buildings. If they had been informed so that they could have understood the matter in all its details, we believe the new court house and jail would have carried, and Ilorry County would now havo a court house and jail that would be a credit to the otherwise progressive spirit of our people. The necessity for up- to date public buildings hero was great when that vote was taken, the necessity for a new court house and jail here now is many times greater. It is a necessity that grows every year, and while time has been passing the people have been learning. They no doubt see now the great mistake thoy made. They will see their error more clearly if the question is agitated this Summer and all along untill the next meeting of the Legis lature. Thore have been several interesting legal trials in the court house here during the past year or two. Great crowds of the people have been present wishing to see and understand the proceedings, hut hardly half of them could obtain seats in th? room. Many of thoso who crowded into the aisles, had to leave Co' This important mailer shouiu oy all means be brought up again and forced to the attention of the people before the next meeting of tin* Leg islature. The great development going on in the county demands that we have public buildings in keeping with our growth and prosperity. Visitors here will be apt to judge us by our public buildings for they are generally a safe index to the progressive spirit of a people. The suggestion of a muss meeting of the people to be held this summer for the purpose of agitating this question is a good one and we hope to see it carried out. By gelling the people together and discussing the matter, interest in new buildings can he created and a vote could he taken that would uncertain the sentiment of those who attend. If some one will name the day for the meeting we will help to advertise it and do all we can to get a largo attendance. In matters of this kind some one must tike the lead. The old wooden stores of the town are fast disappearing here. Neu ly all of the business men have torn down the old erected handsome brick structures, and every new store that goes up here is an ornament to the town. It is a shame that the conn ty must still use the old buildings for her public business. The present court house and jail were suflicient when built. They were ample for the needs of the county at that time. Since then everything has changed. Tim r.ui ?? - O - ??v VIVI V/V/lli I IIUUBC 13 only about half large enough, and it is thought by m my to be unsafe by reason of cracks that appeared some years agyinsotne <>f the walls. The jail building is not safe for the retention of prisoners* It has been broken twice within the past twelve months and prisoners escaped who have not yet been recaptured. We need both a new court bouse and a new j ?il. A new court house that will hold all of the people who may wish to attend a trial. A new jail that will be s*fe or reasonably so against the escape of prisoners. I'ticy Read the Herald Oak Swamp, Miss. Aimi 12. -Editor Hkkai.d I'loaso allow me space in your columns to say a few words. There are live boys and live girls here all from Horry county. We welcome the Herald every week on Thursday. We like to read the let tors from different parts of the county. I see lots of the Horry farmers have already planted corn We arc glad to know the county has come out like it has. Wo left Horry in 1 HiMJ during the hard times but we can see from reading the Herald that it, is much better now than it was then and we arc glad to know it. We have good farming land here. It will raise 20 to do bushels of corn to the aero without fertli/.or. The pine timber is here like it was in Horry -If) or BO years ago. What has become of Mr. Holmes of Texas? We were very sorry to hear of the awful death of K. O. Sessions as we wore all raised together in dear old 1 lorry county. We wish the Herald and the people of Horry good 1 uclt. Slovens has made a fence of the right kind around his farm and it would be a good example for all other farmers to follow, and there would not be so much complaint from mischievous stock. Misses Tempje and Helen Royals visited friends and relatives in the Kldorado section last Sunday. How long an indigo seed will lie in the earth and then finally germinate, is an interesting question. S. M. Stevens, near here, where he cut down pines a loot and a half through a id built him a farm, indigo has sprung up, and lie has had no seed about his place since he went there. There will be an anniversary at Rothlchom church on the third Saturday in May. All are invited to be with us and bring well-filled baskets. All are warned however to leave all of the jugs and bottles at home as no drunkenness or rowdyism will be tolerated. I). It. Koyols was sick last week but In* is up again. Miss M. Gives Information Ajratqat Fditor Hkham>: I'lea so allow me space in the columns of your much valued paper for a few lines in regard to a new court house and jail. These new buildings would be a great thing for Conway ant' for Horry county, and while the judges and the gr nd jurors have been recommending the new and much needed buildings, 1 think it would be right to give I lorry the chance to vote on it again. I believe it would go pretty solid for It, for the people are now seeing the need of these buildings more and more every session of the court-. All men have the privilege of attending court and every one wants 10 be comfortably seated. (NOW SO.MK UKASO.NS AO A INST IT.) Do we get everything wo want soid especially the things that cost us so much money? The honest, laboring man who has no special use for a court house lias to pay his part of it just the same. Wo ask Sir. Scarborough and others if they think that the building would ever prolit Horry county twentylive thousand dollars? Would not this amount be better invested in some good paying intcrprise such as a factory, which would repay its cost and still be running? I think this is what Conway needs. Some fought the railroad, but it came in spite of them, and it has been a blessing to Horry county and has brought her many dollars Whero arc we to day? Under those bonds, if we cannot pay the railroad bonds, what do you think of a greater amount and one that is a dead expense, and one that has no intrcst drawing or income from it. Let's pay up the bonds that are already over us befovo making more, and when we make more let's make some that will repay us while they are drawing interest,. I hnd ent.b er make more railroad bonds if the railroad would go through this and other sections where there is so much good soil and good timber that could be used to much more greater advantages and where people are civilized and have not much use for a new and large court house. Twenty-live thousand dollars is not se easily raised among the laboring class of people, unless they can bond themselves for some interprise that would bring an income to them and enable them to pay the oouds. Let's have something that will bring them an income and help us to have something later on for honor. 1 lorry has been behind, but she is rapidly coming, and we don't want to break her down by doing something for mere glory. 1 am among the laboring class of men and for the laboring man. Let's do something to encourage the laboring man and not bond him for something that is discouraging and no income to him. 1 am for the side that is the br?,t for llorry county if I know which side that is. f do not like the man that is a money bought man and sold for a price, but 1 am for the man that feels the interest of his county and the laboring class. While I have endeavored to say this much, this is not half as much as I want to say, but will close for this time, hoping no one will take any olTenco at this at all. Candidate Mollic (IN. C.) I.eitcr. We are having wot weather at present. Farmers are somewhat behind with their work. We hear of a few cases of small pox at Daisy, S. C. 1 think the people are beginning to see the need of vaccination. Wo have been blessed in that respect as there has been only a few cases in our neighborhood and it seems to be dead at present. We have good lands for trucking and the farmers are getting into the business fast. We need a nearer shipping point which I guess wo will have in the near future. We hope there will be a railroad to Mollic by August. 1 have been staying at Mollic about ?ix weeks and find the pobplo far . tor than I anticipated. Sox. Circcti wood Farmers of lliis community arc busy planting their crops. Some have set out t heir tobacco, and others are getting ready to transplant. I J. W. Miss Sallie MeCrackin and her sister, Miss Glennic visited triends and relatives over at Socastee recently. Miss Molsic Martin visited Miss Anna Brown last Sunday afternoon. W. B W. Time to Pray. A preacher at the conclusion of one of his sermons said: ''Let all in the house who are paying their debt stand tip." Instantly every man, woman and child, with or.e exception, rose to their feet. The preacher seated them and said: ' Now every man not paying his debts stand up." The exception noted, a care-worn, hungry-looking individual, clothed in his last summer's suit, slowly assumed a perpendicular position. "How is it, my friend," asked the minister, ' that you are the only man not to meet his obli gallons?" "I am running a newspaper, " he meekly answered, "and the brethren here who stood up are my subscribers, and?" "Let us pray," exclaimed the minister.? Mr. Buck Parker lost a few pan- I nels of fence last Saturday night while burning olT new ground. Mr. William GolT has tiad a vcrv severe case of la grippe, but is slowly improving. A party of young folks bad an Faster egg hunt at Mr. 1. B. Par- [ ker'son last Sunday afternoon. Mr. Charley and Sam Verccn of Little River, wore at the egg hunt on last i Sunday, also Mr. O. B. Cox's court at i Tilly Swamp on Saturday last. II. L. Singleton passed through' here last Saturday on his way to i Little River. Ben Vaught and I lamp Parker will not plant tobacco as they in- j tended this year and they have a bed of fine plants that they would dispose of on easy terms. Those wishing plants would do well to see them at once. The hog cholera is still raging here. I. 13. Parker says ho has lost about twenty-five or thirty head and many others in proportion. The new railroad seems to be progressing well. The Rev. II. L. Singleton spent Monday night with us very pleasantly on his return from Little River. Cor. From tlic Hay The health of the community is generally good. Some of the farmers are looking sick since the sun has shone on their crops, showing how badly the frost damaged them, but 1 think the corn through this section will grow out again. Most all of the farmers are done planting cotton, and 1 fear that some in this section as well as in other sections have planted according to their neighbor farmers crop; when they should have planted in accordance with their own force. Now I know we have a few bachelors but they should, I think, plant according to the scattered hands that they can pick up, and they come scatteringly in tins section. bluster passed as a day of enjoyment to the young as well as the old of this section. Miss Lottie Ilarielson spent Sunday afternoon with Miss Australia ilinson of the lower part of the section. II. Hinson was in the Feathery Hay section last Sanday. Messrs. I). L. Coleman and Willie Spivey, of Tabor, N. C., spent last Saturdav nitrht at N. P Ktnnbnn't They were in search of berry pickers. 13. F. Harrclson was in Nichols on business one clay last week. Misses Lottie and Cora Harrelson were in Mullins last Saturday. We understand that 13. F. liar redson has purchased him a stump puller, which if operated succe*sfully will greatly improve his farm.
