Crook township, charged with a
heinous crime, Eaireloth claims to
have been drunk.
?The young child of Mr. and
Mrs. M. E. Johnson fell backwards
into a tub of boiling water
last Tuesday and was very painfully
burned. Physicians were summon
ed.
?The weather turned very much
cooler last Sunday afternoon and
1 still cooler by Monday morning.
Some said there was a little frost
Monday morning, but we have heard
of no serious dam ige to strawberries
as yet.
?The ease in the magistrate's
court here last week between W. 1).
Gore and J. Z Ward failed of a
hearing, the defendant waiving a
preliminary and giving bond for his
appearance at the court of General
Sessions.
?The star mail route^cading from
Conw'ay to Hammond has been changed
upon petition of the citizens
from a tri weekly schedule to onco u
day. This will make it much more
convenient for the people living
along this route.

of the negroes lodged in jail. Air.

Monday exhibiting a queer insect
which is attacking tho leaves of tho
young oak trees in his section. Me
showed them to several people in
town but none of them were able to
tell him the name of the curious little
bugs.
b ?The physicians say that they

the atm of Walter Harris who had
the misfortune to get the member
mangled in tho machinery of John
II. Sizer Lumber Co., about a week
ago. so that the doctors dispaircd at
first of saving it.
?The tax executions were turned
over to the sheriff by tho county
treasurer last week. There arc two
hundred and eighty-seven of the executions,
and the unpaid taxes
amount to 1711 00 in round numbers.
This is not as large as the amount
was last year. The sheriff will go to
work at once to collect them.
?Magistrate Ilucks was to have
heard the case of the state vs Oscar
Vick. David Williams, Jake Brown,
Frank Wallace, Jim Brown, George
Gainer and Muius Stonoy. this week
charged with violating a clam law.
The caso was postponed on account
of tho parties being absent. Mr. L.
C. Lacnlcotte is the prosecutor. Ho
is represented by Mr. Hazard; the
defendants are represented by Mr.

land have to put up with waiting
slow ferrymen, and sometimes 'ho

shore; the tide still Mowing out, and
the tired and worn out traveller
across the river from home. No
matter how anxious the traveller is
to reach home, no matter how
much lie is needed there, or how
rainy or bitterly cold it is, there he
must wait until the tide rises high
enough to get the flat otT^no matter
how late that is, or the boat that is
frighten the horse, passes far
enough out of sight and hearing, so
the frantic animal can be coaxed
and driven into the flat.
Then again there will he no wailing,
(no matter what is hurrying)
on long and numurnus rafts of logs
if the Wucoamaw is bridged. And
because of the inconveniences, many
and many never crossed the Waceumaw
river, and know very htJe
of the other side. Ily bridging this
river a great per cent of this will

New School llousv Started
The work on Conway's large graded
school building was begun this
week, the contractor having arrived
several days ago from Iiishopville.
A glance at the plans of this building
is sufficient to show that it will
be one of modern design and one of
which the t ovY n and the county will
be proud. The outs i d e dimensions
of the structure will be
<>3x93 feet and it will be two stoiies
high. On the lirst floor will be live
large class rooms, Superintendent's
office, principal's oflice and the like
On the second floor will be the li
brary, labratory, music room, two
music class rooms and a large auditorium
The building will bo beautifully
situated on upper Main street.

in the building and it promises to
present a line appearance.

A neero boy, who tfot lost several

Hay in (jcnrgctown county, ami lost
both logs us a result of cold ami exposure,
was soinewli it of a curiosity
on the streets hero last week. The
story ones that he was lo-.t for lif
teen days in the swamp, during very
cold weather, and when found and
taken out he had lost the use of his
legs which finally had to be amputated.
The logs were taken olf just
above the knees and helms hobolcd
along on the stum|>s ever since he
recovered, presenting a curious ap
nearance as he moves about as well
as exciting pity.

l-'ir.Hi Shipments of Strawberries
?Four crates of strawberries were
shi pped from Conway last Saturday,
the first to leave this point
I this year. On Monday four crates
were shipped, by F. \V. Zecker, one
by Peter Skipper, one by Morris
Pettenger, and one bytleorgo Dixon.
The strawberries were ripen
ing rapidly until the cold snap of
last Sunday came along. The cold
has thrown them hack consideraply.
Some of the berries in the lield were
found to be fro/en on Monday morning.
These first shipments went to
Haiti more and Philadelphia. If it
had not been for the cold snap, next
week would have seen large shipments
going from this point.
Somw Unhealthy Ditches

of Main street between 6th. and 7th.

A ditch which runs near two or
three hog pens and other scss-pools
has filled u|> and the water is passing
over what is called the side walk
and stands in the street, about six
or eight inches deep in places. It
runs through and is rapidly destroying
a nice garden.
There ire other ditches which run
from a hotel that is loaded with
dish water, pieces of bread and
green slum. The Mayor has been
appealed to. The Hoard of Health
has appealed to the Town Council,
calling thoir attention to the dangerous
condition of those ditches
and asking thorn to enforce tho ordinance
about penning hogs. Yet
nothing is done

Damaged by Frost.
?Reports from the Lor is trucking
section state that tho beau crop
in that section was seriously damaged
by the frosts this week. It
was said that the light frost on Sunday
night destroyed about half of the
plants. Among those who were
damaged are li. M. Hardee, Skipper
Si Todd, W R. Todd, E. I) Lawson,
A F. Gannon. Many were doubtless
damaged in adjoining sections,
but no reports have been received
from them.

has increased to such an extent

project It would necessarily be

completed, and we should begin to
diseuss the question and arouse the
public conscience. Twenty live thousand
dollars ($20,1100) would be sufficient
to give us good buildings
There would be no trouble to sell
bonds at par to build a house with
ample seating capacity so when the
people come to court they can all be
comfortably seated.
The courts transact public business
and the people that pay the
taxes have a right to attend upon
the sessions of the court. It is ben
oficlal. When the matter is proper
ly presented to them they will vote
for the new buildings.
I suggest that wo have a mass
meeting here some time this summer
and a full discussion of the subject.
Then if the sentiment is in favor
of the work, the meeting can instruct
our representatives to make provision
for it.

Now, I had a claim presented
some time ago for lumber, delivered
ou tho road. I saw in the Miciiai.I) 1
where my claim was laid over when
the Hoard met mi March and when
it met in April, I do not see where
my clniin was acted upon or laid
over. I would be glad to know what
disposition was made of my claim.
Now, Mr. Editor this is why I ;
want to make a statement. I want
the county to know that my intention
\Vas not to defraud the county
out of one cent. i
When 1 bought land down here it
was what you might call tho back-'
wood? near the North Carolina state
line with no way to get in or out
1 went to work with the co-operation
of my neighbors to get a road, we
sue -ceded with the road, and though
only here two years, the value of
real estate has increased one hundred
percent or more. When we
got the road opened and chartered.
Mr, Pink Price was appointed overseer.
lid came to me and said he
needed some lumber. I told him to
see the Supervisor and see if he
would furnish or o >v for un in.-? K.> I
furnished. After some time Mr. |
Price (iime bick to me and said the
Supervisor t<dd him to got wli.it
lumber he was obliged to have and
lie would pay for same.
Mr. Price asked me if 1 would cut
it. as he had to get. it from some mill, j
and was authorized by the Supervisor
to do so. I informed him I would
cut it r:ht. away and deliver it to
the different p nuts on said road (
1 told him also I would do as I did up
in Marion, while other mills charged ,
$1 per one hundred feet, I would cut
ami deliver for seventy-five cents
per one hundred feet. 1 cut some
thing over two thousand feet of goad ^
neart lumber and delivered as Mr
Price directed, and 1 was aware that
the Supervisor should give Mr. Price
an order. 1 btlieve Mr. Pink Price
to be a truthful man and that he had
a verbal order from the Supervisor,
and the reason that lie did not get
a written order was because ho did
not know the exact amount requir
ed at the time ho was discussing the
matter with the Supervisor.
I am living on or near this new
road which leads from Tabor, N, C.,
to Mr* II. Buffkin's, and the sheriff
can find mo at home at any time if
lie wants to know anything about
my claim, and if Mr. Boyd will visit
our road lie can see the lumber. I
have written too much already, but
please publish this statement so the
county Board will know that I did
not wantio defraud the county out
of one cent.

As George L. Marsh was riding
horse*>back along the Potato Bed
Ferry road last Tuesday, near the
residence of Mr. Gellispie, his horse
suddenly stumbled and fell, Mr.
Marsh being caught underneath and
