T. Byman is now running at full blast turning out bread and cakes. See his advertisement in another column. ?The town has recently promulgated a new privilege tax ordinance I in which the tax on some of the professions and callings has been about doubled. ?The county supervisor went through Bay boro, Floyds and a portion of Galivants Ferry last woek on business pertaining to the roads * and othor matters. "Just opened up at W. B. Jones' an elegant line of Spring and Summer dress goods. Come at once ladies and supply your needs. Goods the finest and prices the lowest yet heard of." ?P. C. Phipps a strawberry ph.viter of the Adrian section reported the first, of the week that lie I had plenty of ripe berries, and these are the first we have heard of this season. ? We have often stated that we cannot publish communications coming in without the true name of the writer. Wt have received several of this kind this week, and wo cannot publish any of them. One of the articles was signed "April Fool." ?There was a mistake last week in tho notice referring to the appointment of tho Rev. W. S. McCaskill at St. Salvador church. Ho will preach at that church on the second Sunday night instead of on me second Sunday as was published l*st week. ?Wo have just received a very handsome invitation to the commencement exercises, of the Atlanta College of Pharmacy from the faculty and graduating class of that col-! lego. F. M. Ellerbo is a member of | the graduating class and his friends will be glad to know he has made a tine record at the college. ? A petition was being circulated around town last Saturday asking the Government to change the ( schedule on star route leading from Hammpud to Conway, from a triweekly to a daily mail. The people of that section of the county arc > anxious fur better mail facilities, and they have interested Congressman J. E. Ellerbe in the matter, at whose suggestion the petition lias been started. Fine Tobacco Plants. 11. Grantham, one of our tobacco planters of the Exile section, called at the Herald oflico last Monday with several of the finest tobacco plants we have scon this season. The leaves measured four and one fourth inches in length by two and one fourth inches wide, and very healthy, hardy looking plants, lie stated that ho had enough of that kind to transplant his crop next . week. This is early to have them so large. New Hoard Recommended. Mr. E. Van Best, the Superintend ent of Education of tho County has announced that he has recommended Messrs E. Norton and O. J. Hell as members of the new County Hoard of Education, and they will doubt less bo appointed to this position in due course. The members of the old board just going out of oftice ore Messrs. G. Fred Stalvey and T. C. Harnhill. i?^ i t i Daurhttrs of the Confederacy. On last Thursday the ladies met at the residcnco of Mrs. F. A. Hurroughs and organized a chapter of Daughters of the Confederacy. On Thursday over.ing of next week the Chapter will give an entertainment at the graded school building. The small entrance fee which will be . charged will be applied in the purchase of crossos of honor for the old soldiers of the lest cause The program will doubtless be made known later, and the ladies hope to havo c. full attendance at the entertainment - . - # ^ ' KILLED WOMAN AND HIMSELF. F. O. Sessions shot Belle Sessions, his Coualn, five times and then shot Himself Thraugh the Brain Last Thursday morning at about six or seven o'clock, section hands starting to their work at (lomewood, four miles from Conway, heard several pistol shots at the house of Betsy Sessions, nearby, and upon going to the place found F, O. and Belle Sessiouns, both shot down in the yard, the former already dying, and tbc latter evidentI3 mortally wounded. F O- Sessions, kuown bv his friends as "Buddie" had shot the i girl several times and then shot himself through the brain, the ball entering near the temple above the right car and passing out on the opposite side of the head. The girl hud medical attendance and was found to be wounded in thirteen different places, though only five bul-' lets had been fired info her body. She was conscious and made a Statement to the coroner concerning the shooting, which statement appears below, but between sunset and dark on Thursday afternoon she also breathed her last from the effects of the wounds received No one saw I the deed, it seems except the two parties concerned, but every circumstance surrounding the tragedy, the signs 011 the head of the dead man (powder burns rte., and a letter left by the dead man to his mother) previous threats all pointed unmistuka bly to suicide 011 the part of Sessions, after he had shot the woman 1 to death. Dr. 11. 11. Burroughs, the coroner, was at once notified of the kill ing and lie wont at otico and hud summoned the following jury of in quest: J. IV Zimmerman, M. 10. Johnson, S. P. Maws, M. S Collins, B. F. Moore, C. M. Lyon, D. 11. Iluss, A. P. Johnson, J H. McCaskill, J. 10. Parker, Dan'l Grainger, Sam Harris, George llray and \V. W. Cannon, who rendered theirverpict.us follows: ''We Hud that the dechased, F. O. Sessions, hero lying dead, came to his death by pistol shot by his own hand." Late in the afternoon ol the same day, the coroner was informed of the death of Hollo Sessions, and he at once empanelled the following jury: .). 11. Maker, J. 11 McGwigan, J. C. Gause, W. T. Spears, ('. M. Klliott, Daniel Grainger, S. 1'. Collins, S. M. Creel, C. M. Mryant, Sam Harris, 10 S. Maker and J. H. Creel, and they returner! the following verdict: "That the said Mellc Sessions came to her death by gun-shot wounds .in the hand of F. (). Sessions." The following is a copy of the testimony of the witnesses taken down a', the inquest lirst above mentioned upon the dead body of F. O. Sessions, including the statement made by Mello Sessions. J. (J. Gause being sworn says: "I heaul five shots, then it stopped and 1 heard another. 1 came up here and found Mr. Muddie Sessions dead. That was this morning. Pistol was under elbow muzzle sticking out from elbow." J. G. Gause. J. C. Me Mi ide, who being duly sworn says: ' As I crossed swamp T heard live reports and in a second or two another. I never saw them. As 1 came up straight with the house 1 saw a man lying in the yard and a womau lying in the yard. 1 saw two children around the woman crying. 1 heard some one crying my Lord. Dewilt being sworn says: "As 1 was coming on to my work, I heard pistol live times, in a minute or so I heard another report. When T got to where I could see I saw a man lying in the yard and when I got further around to where 1 could see T saw a woman lying in the yard with two children over her crying. (Questions by juror) When you saw a man aud woman lying in the yard, did you know them? Ans. I could not tell. Who did you think it was? Ans. 1 thought it was F. J O Sessions and Belle Sessions. ' What prompted you to think it was them? Ans. About a month or so ago, 1 heard that Buddie was corning here. Had you heard of any talk of Buddie killing himsel'? Ans. No. Was anyone else coming hore? | Ans. Not at this time. G W. Dewitt. Betsy Sessions being sworn says: "Buddie Sessions kept coming here and threatening the life of Hello Sessions. 1 told him to stay away. He i also cursed Babe Wise, and told j Belle she liked him (Wise) bettor I He drew his pistol one night last [Summer or Fall, this was the first I threat I heard. I do not know any| thing of the tragedy only I heard j pistol shots and heard her scream. ' When 1 came, up Belle told me that the wounds would kill her. Qucs. 1 What was the condition of Buddie 1 when you got to the house? Ans. 1 , think he was breathing. Ques. llow : long had Buddie been coining *over here? Ans. About a year.* Ques. I How long has Babe Wise been com ing? Ans. Ho has always been coming Ques. Were you expecting this | trouble? Ans. Yes, Buddie did not look or act right. Ques. (lave you or Belle got a pistol? Ans. No. Ques. Has there been a pistol borrowed? Ans. Not that I know of Ques. Were >ou folks going or had an | idea of going to Bibe Wise? Ans. I do not know (Sgd) Betsy Sessions. Joe Long being sworn says: '1 heard the pistol shots but did not see who shot thorn I heard six if not mistaken 1 thought the shoot- I ing was right here. I thought it. was I [ SossioQt doing the shooting. Miss Betsey was talking with me at the time. She said to me, my poor baby is dead. Ques. Where vou live would a man ordinarily expect trouble? Ans. I thought so from what I hoard. Ques. What did I telle say about it? Ans. She. taid she ex pectod to got killed at any time. Ques Has Belle ever told you how the traubleoriginated? Ans. It was in regard to marrying him Ques. Did sho toll you why she would uot marry him? Ans. No. QueS. Did sho tell you anything about Wise? Ans. No, she told roe her nest hoy was coming but did not say who he was." Joe Long. G. W. Sessions being sworn says: "I was told Buddie Sessions had shot Belle and himself. I came and found it about like I was told. Qu?8. Had you heard anything said that led you to expect trouble hero? Ans. From what I heard Hollo, Betsey and Buddie say I was surprised. Ans. Yes, a young man Wise told me last uiglit he was coming by here and was then going homo." G. VV. Sessions. Fred C. Lewis being sworn says: "1 know nothing of it. Not seen Buddie in a month. Don't romom * ber last time I saw Belln, I have heard of Buddie and some fellows fussing here. Ques. Do you know anything of Buddie having thus murder premeditated? Ans. No, 1 heard she was going to Florida. Buddie said she should not go. Was told she v/as to go to-day." Fred Lewis Statement of Belle Sessions taken bv the coroner; "Buddie Sessions shot me this morning about <> or 7 o'clock. 1 was in tbo house and started to run and he caught me and held rnc and carried me out of the piazza and shot ine. I don't know how many times, 5 or 1 I think. I don't, know why he shot me, has been cursing and rowing a long time. 1 tried to get him on a peace bond but eould'nt. I Said for mo to marry him and if I j did'nt have him I could not Imve any \ one. lie told me lots of times he j would kill me. The last time 1 think I ihree or four weeks ago. Me said he heard 1 was going to leave today and on his account. I told him I did'nt want to go. lie said "I will kill you " I tried to get away from him, but he pulled mc out on the piazza. Examination at Floroncf There will be held at Florence, S. 0., at the graded school building on Saturday April 22nd 1905 at 11 o'clock a? m , an examination to determine who shall be appointed to both U. S. Military and Naval Academies from the sixth S. C. | District. All who desiro to apply for either of these places must bo on hand. Prof. J. L. Mann, Mr. A. II. Gasque and Miss Lena Lawson will conduct the examination. Write to either of them at Florence, S C., or to mo at Sellers, S. C., for information. The one who is appointed to Wost Point must report at Fort McPhorson, Atlanta, Ga., on the first day of Mav 1905, J. E.
