Last Saturday morning about fi
o'clock the peoblo began to gather l
at Punch Bowl landidg on the Little i
Pee Dee for the purposo of enjoying ]
a picnic. By 12 o'clock there was <
quite a crowd prosent. A few minutes
before dinner time a thunder ,
storm arose and the crowd began
to gather under a shed near by
where they stayed until the ram
was over. This caused dinner to be
a little late and by this time the
people were getting hungry. The
good things wero soon upon the table
and some one shouted, "Everybody
come to dinner." The table
was surrounded in a few minutes,
every one expecting something to
satisfy the appetite, and no one was
in the least disappointed, for they
had prepared baskets and brought
them well filled with almost all kinds
of food, good to satisfy the appetite
of a hungry man.
After dinner the boys went in
bathing, the ladies stood upon the
hill watching the young men swimming
up and down the river until
suddenly their attention was called
by some one, stating that Capt. J.
m, unver askcu their unuiviaea attention
for a few minutes. Ho said
but little about his election. The
most of his speech was directed to
the ladies, telling them how hard
he had fished the night before for
the occasion.
In a few minutes the people were
leaving for their homes,

Ever Visited the Place.
Monday was the 4th of July, and
iverybody wont to Myrtle Beach;
veil, maybe not everybody, but the
trowd was closely estimated ui 1500.
The first thing on tho program
vas dinner. About two hundred
ook dinner at the hotel, and the
>alancc engaged in a basket picnic
kt tho pavillion on the strand.
Next on the program was target
md rapid fire practice by the Horry
Jussars under the efficient guidance
>f Col. Spivey.
Then the candidates had their say,
hey spoke from the piazza of the
lotel. Col. Spivey was master of
eremonies and introduced Mr. A.
\ Johnson, candidate for County
Supervisor. Mr. Johnson led oil
oud and strong, ho said ho would
five us good roads next year, and
fhen he would go higher and build
wo bridges across tho W'accama.v,
>ut he did not tell tho crowd at
vhat point ho proposed to build
.hem. Then he would buy blood
lounds for tho county so that wo
would not have to send to Marion

Mr. J. M. D. Jones candidate for
bounty Supervisor, was next introlueed;
Mi?. Jones said lie had had
?oine experience in road building,
md if elected, ho would work to
mild good roads so that all could
?0 to Mr. Johnson's store to trade.
He would not promise to build any
bridges, until lie saw whether the
louuty was able to do so or not.
If elected he would do the best he
lould.
Mr. W. L Mi shoe candidate for
oierk of Court was the next ->n the
list. Mr. Mishoc said ho had hold
theofflcea little over one-term, and
would stand on his record. He felt
with the experience he now had, he
would be able to more efficiently discharge
the duties of the ollice in the
future. There were, several after
liitn, but lie did'nt blame them.
Hon. Jeremiah Smith candidate
for Clerk of Court, was next introduced.
Uncle Jerry believed one
lady was as strong as twenty oxen,
so he would try to win the ladies.
He spoke of the grandeur of our
country, was glad ho was an Ameri
can, a South Carolinian and an
Horryite. Saw a great future before
us. He would have been a canldate
for the Senate in fact wanted
to be, but would not run against his
friend Holliday. Some one in the
crowd wanted to know what was
wrong with Mishoo, and kept "hurrahing
for Mishoc."' If Mr. Mishoc
wanted to hold the ollice of Clerk of
Court 25 years he must follow his
(Smith's) record and always beat
the other fellow. Ho guessed MoQueen
was alright, Oliver was an
old friend, and Hell was a good man,
but Hell too rank a holt. Let him
make a record first. Thoy could all
wait longer, but ho could not.
Capt. J. M. Oliver candidate for
Clerk of Court, was next introduced.
Mr. Oliver was an ox-clerk and was
proud of his record. Uncle Jerry
had made a good 4th of July speech
but he (Oliver) felt that he was going
to be clerk again.
Hon. I). I). Harrolson candidate
for House of Representatives was
the next speaker. Said ho voted for
the necessary appropriations for
Confederate Veterans and other
purposes. The pension appropriations,
free scholarships and the increase
of the public school fund had
run the State's expenses up some,
but he was not to blame. Ho had
been mindful of his country's interest,
and if the people were satisfied
with his past record, he would
appreciate uieir iuvors 111 ine iuture.
Col. Spivey candidate for the
House, remarked on tho wonderful
propress the county was making,
mentioning incidently tlio fiuo beach
and commodious hotel. Progress
was also visible in the rural districts
in better farms, better houses at better
stock. If the people thougl
him the proper man to represent
them in the House he would be
proud of the honor and would try
to servo their best interest.
Mr. W. A. Prince candidate for
County Superintendent of Education
came next. Mr. Prince said ho was
in the race two years ago with two
opponents from Galivants Ferry,
and had come out a close second.
Education was the underlying element
of civilization and the future
prosperity of our country depended
upon its enlightenment. Mr. Prince
made a good 4th of July speeeh.
Mr. J. II. Marsh candidate for
County Treasurer was the last candidate
introduced, he had no speech to

people of the county to the best of

Mr, J, C. Blum of Little River
was introduced by Col. Spivoy as a
coming candidate. Mr. Blum denied
this and said lie had no speech
to make.
Mr. J. Lewis Leo recalled his old
friends, the Almighty and the cow
pea. He spoko of trucking and
strawberries along the usual iine.
It was a big day. The bowling
alley hummed all day, the bathing
houses aud surf were crowded. Everybody
was happy. And last but
not least there were no accidents to
mar the pleasures of the day.

Olc Gibson, infant son of Mr. and
Mrs. M. G, Andersen, died last Monday
and was buried at Waccamaw,

his life and had beeu paralyzed on
May 15tb, died on June 25th. He \
leaves a wife, three sous, two daught- ,
ers, fifty grand children, twenty- j
five great-grand children to mourn t
a great loss, lie was seventy-four

\V. H. Strickland, after several
long weary months <?f suffering
died at his home near Zoan, S. C.,
011 Juno 7th, 11104. Ho was born
Jan. 8th, 1808, in Horry county and I
was reared a fatherless boy by his
mother and three older brothers ,
who now survive him. Ho married |
May 2nd, 1885 Miss Agness Andor- i
son. <
He joined the Missionary Baptist 1
church at Pleasant Meadow in 1882 1
and in the year 1000, moved his
membership to lied Oak Hill Baptist.
church near his home, where ho <
remained a faithful member till he
died, lie was a dear lover of the
Sunday school and as long as he was
able, his seat was never vacant.
He was an industrious man, highly
respected in his community, a
good neighbor, husband and father.
lie leaves a wife, six children,
three brothers and a host of relatives
and friends to mourn his loss.
The bereaved family has the deepest
sympathies of the community.

Died near Ruth, S. C., June 3rd,
11)04, Miss Otta Sarvis, the only
daughter of*Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Sar
vis.
She was interred in the Cox grave
yard near Buck Creek churoh tlie
following Sunday morning to await
the resurrection inorn.
Otta was in her fourteenth year
and was a bright and industrious
young girl, obliging, peaceful, quiet
and loving.
