soon be going theronnds. This is|one
of the evils that all candidates must
expect to have, and be prepared to
meet any kind of charges that may
be brought against them. A man
may think himself ever so innocent
and his life freo from everything
that might injure him, Alas! when
he becomes a candidate there is sure
to be an awakening.

In trucking as in other ways of
farming it pays to diversify the
crops. If one crop is depended upon,
the market may become too low
to pay tho cost of production. From
observation of tho trucking industry
around Conway, we learn that what
may bring a fair price this year
may not be worth shipping next.
Radishes sometimes turn out to be a
paying crop to plant, but this year

Tiie practice of bleeding candidates
on overy occasion has been
condemned as unfair by the better
class of people but still it is indulged
in more or less every campaign year.
As the candidate goes from precinct
to procinct he is met by all sorts of
requests for money. Some of the
applicants have written petitions
for him to read as being a full statement
of thoir grievances, others apply
without it. This man has just
had his house burned, his horse lias
just died, or ho has some helpless
relative whom he is not able to support.
Anothoi applicant has been
commissioned to ask donations for a
new church, to buy a new organ for
one already established, or such
^ matters. The amount given to ono
cause docs not mean much by itself,
but when the candidate gives to all,
even a small amount, and he

We think the Hkiiald one of the
best local papers over published.
Wc had some r^in last week which
was good for growing crops. We
think one of the most important
things in making a good crop is to
use the right kind of fertilizer, if
you use any. The writer has a
piece of corn in which he used two
brands of fertilizer, you can bo at
some distance oil' and can tell to a
row where the different brands meet
in the field. The farmers bone is
one of the best.
Less than one half t he tobacco
will be make this year than was last
year.
Now, a word about the candidates.
We have seen several tickets suggested
and have one too, but we
will not give ours yet. We would
be glad to see the Editor in the field
for State Senator.
We are glad to see Prof. W. A.
Prince in the race again, also Col.
1). A. Spivey. We would he glad to
see W. J. Hardee come out for
treasurer. We announce Geo. A.
Prince a candidate for magistrate
in Simpson Creek township. Now
boys, lets elect the right men for
the right places and be sure to elect
men who have the fear of God before

The open debate at Wanamaker on
Saturday night began the first, Sunday
in June and was a great success.
The query was ably discussed
by O. C. Conerly and W. Chester
Hooks on the affirmative, and A. I).
Jackson and Boyd Ford on the negative.
After much discussion the
judges decided in favor of the affirmative.
We are glad to see tho candidates
coming out and especially are we
glad to see the announcement of Col.
D. A. Spivey for the House of Representatives.

Mr. and Mrs. John Hklwards of
Chadbourne, N. 0., visited their
mother, Mrs. Annie Mishoe, of this
section last week.

Some of our farmers are talking
of planting strawberries. We have
the right soil for growing early
truck, but we lack a near snipping

the funeral of Mrs. G. J. Bryant

George T. Sessions has received
his commission as magistrate at

S. D. Anderson and Stella Moore
have beou very sick, but they are
improving and we are hopeful of
their recovery.
E. S. Booth lias taken advantago
of the recent showers and planted
astrawberry patch. His neighbors,
D. D. Anderson and N. S. Hardwick
have had such success this
year, they say they will give them a
race next. We like to see young
men coming to the front.
L. S. Booth and John Dorman
wore the first to ship Irish potatoes
from this place.
The truckers havo the blues now
over the cucumbers and beans, as
the men refuse to take them out of
the oftlco.
Wo aro glad to seo uncle Jerry
out as a candidate for the clerk 's office,
but we don't see how the Horry
boys will do without him in the
Legislature.

Lula Anderson made a trip to Conway
last Sunday afternoon, and
when they returned, N, S. Hardwick
and Miss Clarkoy Booth were
married, Rov. John Manning performing
the ceremony. Mr, Hardwick
is one of our successful farmers.
Miss Clarkie is the charming daughI
ter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Booth.
The report that C. W. Anderson
had a contagious disease like small
pox is absolutely false. Wo are
glad to note his improvement. The
doctor has done some good work.

are running?

at the residenceof the bride's father,
W. J. McCracken, of Greenwood, his
pretty and accomplished daughter,
Miss Lula, wa married to Mr. David
Dux of Dongola, A. M. Dusenbury,
Notary Public, officiating. The attendants
were, T. L, Smart with
Miss Lottie McCracken, A. B. Mux
with Miss Aley llux, VV. I). Lawrimore
with Miss Ilessie llux. The
bride was beautifully attired in a
white organdie dress, trimmed with
fine lace and white satin ribbor..
The groom was dressed in the usual
custom. Many -vere the congratulations
of Mr. llux on winning Miss
Lula for his wife. The writer wishes
this couple health, wealth, prosperity

last issue something said about the
bad arrangement of the trains on
this the A. C. L. R. R. The arrangement
is not half as bad as the
management, I was at the Howell
siding yesterday when the train ran
up and stopped. 1 was in front of
the door of the express car and saw
several baskets of beans and cucumbers
tumble down on the floor,
some of them splitting up badly. 1
stepped inside to see how things
looked and saw the back end of the
ar about full to the top of fruit
rates and baskets. They were
Jiends up, sides up, bottom up and

n> ;i< on about 30 more baskets at
that place which they tumbled up
in the same end of the car. While
they were tumbling them in and up,
one crate of cucumbers roiled down
to the floor and split open, a part of
the cucumbers fell out on the floor
and the conductor told one of the
hands to cram them back which he
did, but he remained in sight of
that open crate and he was a darkey.
The train moved off. Now we are
paying the Express commpany $61.00
to haul 100 bushels of beans or cucumbers
to' Pittsburg which is an
outrago. Then to see the carriers
tear the up when "there is no
reason fc it. ir.? speak to thorn as
kindly at.'Mt it r.s you can, and he
hurls an insult in your face, and this
they never fail to do- This will
make a man decide to get out of the
trucking-business in a hurry. Our
packages have to be in good condition
or the couojctirs will not take
them. Our consignees are continually
complaining about torn up
packages and making discounts.
The digging man has to bear all this
robbery, feed and clothe and furnish
all the luxuries for tho whole world.
IIow much longer can he stand it.

We were sorry to note the death
of Alfred Watts in the last issue.
He was for a Ion# time a resident of
this community, having moved away
some years ago. We were also sorry
to hear of the death of Col. 011|
lespio.
Wo read with pleasure the names
of some of the candidates. There is
ouo name that we would be glad to
see and that is J. M. D. Jones for
the office of County Supervisor. He
is a man who believes in good roads
and lie understands road building
as wellasany man I know of as his
work as overseer will prove. Wc
do not know that he wants the office
but we think the office wants
him, and therefore make the suggestion
