help to our town or county. So
when you arc going into any new
undertaking, let us into the secret
and you will find us ready to lend
a hand through the. columns of the

If we want good telephone connections
with neighboring towns,
now is the time to begin to think
about it. A representative of the
Columbus Telephone Company will
be here before long to see how anx ious
we are for a good system.
Next year will sec two tobacco
warehouses in operation in the business
portion of Conway. No elTort
will be spared by the enterprising
business men of the town to make
this the banner market of the Eastern
part of the State. Help is expected
from the tobacco planters of
the county, for without them nothing
can be done. Hut help from
them is certain to be at hand after
the town has done her duty in building
the market.
It is a serious tiling to question
the race of people who have lived as
respected citizens in our county for
so long a time, mingling with white
people, members of white churches,
and having also, the appearanco of
white people. Such a question
should never be raised without good
cause. Prom what we can learn
the case that was up here last Sat
urday might well have been left
alone. The consequences to the
feelings of those involved, is enough
to enjoin silence, when there is
nothing but supposition to act upon.
It was the remark of many that
the Atlantic Coast Lumber Co., was
going into business on a scale far
too extravagant to be a final sue
cess. Recent developments in rela
tion to the company prove that the
business so far has not paid. In
seeming disregard for the probable
consequences, they spent thousands
of dollars in projects that have never
brought a cent in return, and
may never as to that matter. Not
withstanding we hope the company
will get over its present difficulties,
pay all of its indebtedness, and
continue to be what it has been, a
great thing for Georgetown.
Til* old year which will soon
come to its close will leave the people
of Horry county in as happy and
prosperous condition as they have
ever been in their lives. Many will
not hesitate to make the assertion,
that financially they arc in better
condition than they have ever been.
Such conditions are the right kind
to inspire confidence and the determination
to do still bettir the coming
year, with the help of a kind
providence. The time is passing
rapidly into the back ground when
Horry County, in many things, was
considered behind some other counties
of the #state. The county is
coming to the front and people outside
are begining to find it out.
Many people will doubtless observe
this Christinas Day without
once thinking of the important
event it commemorates. With
many it has ceased to be a day to
bring any religious thoughts to the
uiiuu, uui is sunpiy and purely a
day of pleasure. Jn a few days, the
newspapers will be full of the petty
crimes committed during the holidays
in the slums and byways of
the world where spiritous liquors
are more freely used than at other
times. It is strange, but men who
will refuse to drink any other time,
will indulge at Christmas. There is
no harm In taking the day as one of
recreation and innocent amusement,
but we should never forget the origin
of the holiday.

H. W. Hodge went to Conway
Tuesday of last week on business.
We must have one of the largest
schools in the county. Our enroll
inent is now ninety nine
Many of the farmers are cutting
their tobacco barn poles and preparing
to plant more tobacco in this
section than ever before. While
many seem to fear tobacco next
year believing that tobacco will
not bring the price next year that
it has this year. Hut the demands
next year will undoubtedly be just
as great as it has been this year.
Why should not the price be just as
good?
We are clad to report Mrs. M. A.
Shelly, who has been- very ill for
some time, as rapidly improving,
W. H. Carter brought in a line lot
of banannas and other fruit last
week for t he Christmas holidays.

nia, visited our school last Friday
and delivered an interesting address
which the teacher and pupils
were very much delighted to hear.
Mr. Causee is a good man and believes
in good decipline and seems
much interested in the betterment
of the rising generation of our land
and country.

OBITUARY.
Mrs. Elizabeth I'hipps died near
Loris, S. 0., on Dee. 19th 1902, in
the 79th year of her age. She was
married to Lambert I'hipps in 1852.
Three children are still living to
mourn the loss of a loving mother,
one son and two daughteas.
She joined Honey Camp Baptist
church when about fourteen years
old and lived a consistent, faithiul
member until death. As a neighbor,
she was thoughtful and kind,
loved her church, and was a true
and devoted wife and motr.cr
Her husband was killed on the
battle fields of Virginia. Loft a
widow, no sacrifice (lid she deem
too great for the comfort of her
children. She still lives in their
lives.
During her illness, which lasted
for several months, she magnified
the grace of God by her patient and
meak submissionjto the will of her
Heavenly Father.
Rev. G. F. Stanley conducted the
funeral services and her body sleeps
in the Collins burying ground.
