It is argued by some that, the
remarkably warm weather this
Winter is-owing to the aetiveness
of volcanoes. S
Land is being sold these days for
fifteen or t wenty dollars per acre,
when twenty years ago, it was
thought to be a bad bat gain at lift \ (
cents or one dollar per acre.
A farme* hv cho name of Moore
in Florence county has raised 150
bushels of artichokes on one acre of
land, and sold his crop t<? a drug
house for 75 cents nor bushel. There
seems to be money even in arti
chokes.

several of the newspapers some
weeks ago, concerning an impressive
sermon preached by one of our
preachers on the subject of debt
paying. It is a hard saying, but
nevertheless wo think it i> true, that
the man who is continually making
small debts, which he neglects to
pay, is a draw back to the commit
nity.
Inn laws regulating the assessment
of property for taxation are defeetive
in many particulars. It is a
difficult matter to regulate anyway.
But the officers of tin4 law should
see that such laws as we have are
enforced to the letter and in this
they should be encouraged by all
the people. The people should turn
out at the Auditor's appointments,
return their property correctly, and
give him as little trouble as possible.
As the population of the county
increases, and the bulk of country
produce hauled to our markets
grows, the country roads are found
to be in worse and worse condition.
Some one remarked a few days ago,
that in certain sections, the roads
were cut up from the tires of vehicles,
more than he had ever noticed
before in his life. Good roads are a
necessity and they arc becoming
more and more of a problem as the
years go by. Will they at last be
maintained by t xation oT the poo
pie? Time will finally force this
remedy.
The greatest factor in the up.
bidding of a town is the public spii
it of her citizens. The greatest nat
ural advantages, such as geographical
situation, can amount to but
little when public spirit is wanting. ;
Alas for the future of that towi
where each man seems to ho bent
solely upon the advancement of his
own individual interests! "In union
there is strength." And the busi ness
men of a town, when they bo
come united and pull together, can
bring about any reasonable result
they may desire, in the line of im
provement.
In the linal analysis the responsibility
for our schools rests on the
people, on you and on me. It is the
duty of every citizen to keep himself
informed on these questions and
in touch with all movements for the
betterment of our social condition.
We must look to the character and
ability of those who make and ad
minister our laws and put intelli
gent and honest men in official positions.
Next to the church of
Christ, including in it the Christian
family, the school house is the most
important factor in the enlargement
of intelligence, the increase of
virtue and the elevation of our social
status. We owe it to God, to our
country, to our State, to our county,
to our families to our friends, to
the rising generation aid to generations
yet unborn, to do all incur
power to promote and perfect this
great agency for the betterment of
mankind. You ean do something
towards this end. 1 can do something.

people of Conway, were some of the
noted featuivs which characterized
the meeting. It was a privilege tn
meet the pastors of the respective
churches. Conway is to be congratulated

Some of the Local Preachers
of Those Times, and how
we Lived.
Your correspondent from Cool
Spring. "Fanner," has called back
memories of some of our old time
local preachers lie can go back
far enough in recollections to make
interesting reading,L)He mentioned
Uncle Tom Heaty. He must remember
also Uncle .lackey Heaty, his
brother, and still there were others.
Who does not remember Isaiah,
Jeremiah and .'George Stalvev and
one McCormack, all our old time
local preachers, and the very salt of
the earth. All that knew them
loved them and still remember
them. They were men who made
the world better by living in it.
They were men who tried to do their
whole duty as they saw it.
How much better some of us ouifht
to be by reason of knowing them.
Co where' thev lived and see* what a
power for good they have been It
could not be said of them, ' A prophet
is not. withoutjhonor save in his
own country," for they were honored
by all who knew them.
Their neighbors talked about them
almost every where they met. They
I ilked about them till they died, they
t il' about them vet.
These local preachers preached
without money or without price I
never knew one of them to get anything
for Ids oroaehing except
good will and a dinner.
I should say something about how
we lived in those times. I think
six "barrels of flour would have stocked
Conway. 1 have often seen two
farmers throw in and buy a barrel,
! then saw it in too, being careful that
each got his share. All Hour was
put up iu wood in those times.
We had for "sweetening," old
black West India:: molasses. We
! had no sugar about the house except,
a small amount of very dark
brown sugar. This was guarded
ami used only to sweeten catnip tea
for the baby.
You know, it has been for the
last few years only that when you
sat down t'? table your hostess
would ask. '' Would you take sugar
iu yours"? Hut ourtold ministers
li, ed and seemed to eniov them
s"l\(>s. Tliey seemed to think tliut
nothing was worry or trouble, if by
by so doing, they were walking in
IIis steps. When we htld a two
days meeting, and sometimes a protracted
meeting, we knew where to
goto get the best fare. On Sundays,
we would have for breakfast,
wheat biscuit, and at dinner if it
was in the Summer, apple or peach
pie, with both the bottom unci top
crusts made of flour. We thought
we lived well. Our old ministers
would walk for miles and preach to
and go back home the same night,
so they could be at work the next
day. Where are they now? They
have gone whence no traveler" ever
returns.

to pay interest on Katlroad Bonds, * balance

Veterans over 50 years ot age.
