Taking everything into consider ation, the year 1!H)2, so far in its history. has been a prosperous year for all of our laboring people as well as for all olour business men. ICxccpt in some few small sections of our county where the dry weather of last Summer cut the grain crops short, mother earth has yielded abundant crops?money crops as well as the food crops. Cotton and tobacco, as a general rule, over our county, have turned out well, enabling the farmer to meet his obligations, and perhaps, in many instances to have a snug balance over with which to begin the crop of another year. Those of our farmers who engaged in truckraising as a general thing realized good returns for their toil. Notwithstanding some small drawbacks. we arc Tree to say that this year should go down in history as a prosperous one, unless, of course, the two months of the year'yet to pass, should be marked by some general disaster. Years like the present one will help our farmers to get their farms on a strictly eash basis, that is, to learn to run their farms a year , ahead instead of a year behind in finances, as many of our farmers have * been doing. The practice of mortgaging the year s crop for supplies, even before the crop is planted; brings more loss to our small farm- ! ers than anything else. The best thing they can do is to bo very economical?get something ahead?at least while prosperous years favor them?and run their business on a cash basis, thus avoiding the pay. . incut of a double price for tlicit supplies. Years like the present should t help them toward this end. <Dors Horry County do her duty . to her poor? This is a question ' which we feel, from observation, 1 must be answered. Some seek help from the county when they * arc really able to help themselves, f but do not do so by reason of pure t laziness. But there are many genu- t inc cases of utter, helpless poverty, * where self help is a physical impos- > sibility, a?ul no relatives from ; whom succor may be obtained, t Such cases as those last, mentioned 1 deserve help from the county. It is true that^thecounty pays something to her poor, but it is so littlein some deserving cases, that it is nothing more than a sham. Conway is growing rapidly as a business center. The amount oi freight hauled hero by rail and by i water has more than doubled in the ' past half a dozen years. For fur- * ther proof look at the difference in | the size of the crowd on our streets < almost any day in the week. Watch < us, we are coming to the front! The hum of the saw mill and the sharp blows of the carpenter's ham mer are now always heard mingled together iu our growing little city. How long before they will lie joined k by the song of the loom and the | spindle! The three would make a | chorus, tit music for advancing 1 years of growth and prosperity. Last Monday was legal salesday and there were more sales of real estate to be made than usual. There were several tracts to be sold* for delinquent taxes, only or.o of these traets were sold however, the taxes and costs against the others having beC'u paid up before hand Several lots al Loris were sold under mort gage held by J. A Taylor of Wilmington, one tract of 50 acres in I hie Us township at the suit of J. W. Ilolliday against A. N. Johnon, and a tract of 10 acres in Little River township under order of court. There were more people in town than usual, many of them interested in the property to be sold. The bidding was lively and the property brought good prices, being sold at prices named to the following persons: .1. A. McDermott Co, tract in Simpson Creek township containing 50 acres. $-0. J. W. Ilolliday, tract of 50 acres in Rucks township. 125. J. It. Allsbrook, dwelling house and lot at Loris, S. C. $405. J. It. Allsbrook, one and one half lots at Loris. $181. J no. T- LVince, store building and lot at Ia>ris. $ 100 Win. S. Thompson, tract of ten acres in Little River township. -16. Real estate has considerably ad vanced in price in this county dur ing the past few years, and is all the time going higher. It may be considered at this time as a very good investment. The Disycnsary haw. Next Friday an important case, involving theconstilutionalityof the dispensary law, will be argued be fore Judge Dant/.lcr. The case comes up by reason of an election on the question of a dispensary at Lake City and Scran ton, in Williamsburg county, which some time back voted for a dispensary. Legal steps were taken to prevent the opening of the dispensary and the case has become a test of the constitutionality of the law. The State will be represented by the attorney general, Hon. (J. Durcun Hellinger. and the other side by S. W. G. Shipo and Mr. liass of Florence. Williamsburg has a special exemption in the dispensary law, and it is conceded that this is unconsti tutional, and the whole law is in,...i.....i :.. 41.- i . ; ; MIIH'U III III*- UI'CISUMl.
