Some , of the books have lost their bindings, the leaves are scattering, and the ink is fading out so that the 1 writing is getting very dim. These old records are very important to every owner of land in the county, , and the grand juries of many years past have recommended (hat all the.ie records be transcribed so as to pro serve them for present and for fu ture use. As yet no attention has been paid to the recommendations of the grand jury and every year, the records are seen to be in worse and worse condition. The matter will be brought to the attention of our members of the Legislature and it is hoped that they will pass an act requiring those old records to be recopied into substantial well bound books. Burroughs School Begins Well. The first month of the Burroughs Graded School closed last Friday. All things considered, the prospects for a successful year are bright. Ninety-five pupils were enrolled this first month fifty-live boys and for ty girls. The average attendance! was seventy two. This is rather low for the number enrolled, but it can be accounted for in part, by the fact, that a number did n6t enter till late in the month. Again wo would urge upon par ents the necessity of sending their children every day. A day lost may prevent a pupil's promotion at the end of the session. The pupils that, do best are those who are there every day. The teachers are grateful to natrons for all courtesies during the past month, and beg that they may always have the hearty co-operation of all the patrons. C1ZD II J Wells, Supt Wampee Briefs. ** It is seemingly strange to note the stoppage of steam gins and grist mills for want of water. Nevertheless it is true in this community. The wells supplying these have almost exhausted their supply, and have to work only half time, 'and wait for another day." M. J. Ward had the misfortune to loose a very line milk cow last week in a peculiar way. Mo had just purchased the cow tit Little River and was oringjng tne cow home when she suddenly became unrully and plunged head foremost against a pine tree beside the road, breaking her neck instantly. Cotton is pretty nearly all gathered and the farmers seriously realize how short the crop is. Potatoes are almost a complete failure, owing to the continued drought. From what we can learn from the fisherman in this section, last weeks catch was very small and they find j ready sale for their fish at. gooi. prices. Quite a number of farmers speak of planting tobacco next year, the more diversity of crops ilie more money the farmers .handle and the prices farmers wore forced to pay' for their supplies the present year, should oe a striking lesson to them to move their smoke houses and corn cribs from Chicago to their own homes. A fact that is invaria bly true, when you visit a farmer and find him, ^his crib and smoke house well filled, you find a man with money and a good credit. To use a slang phrase lie lives on "easy street and the shadv side. The continued drought has been somewhat broken by a good rain. We are glad to see Joe Hell out again after a severe attack of ty phoid. Mrs. Hell continues to improve and our community is clear of the dreaded disease. Miss Mary Livingstone is visiting i friends in Whiteville, X. 0. Miss Etta Thompson is spending the week at Conway, visiting her brother, Mr. A. C. Thompson. The State vs. Jos. Todd, neglect of public duty. No bill. The State vs. Zade Hull kin, assault with intent to kill. True bill. Long, for assault and battery, was not tried* The defendant plead guilty to assault of a high and aggravated na tare,and was sentenced to a line of 125, or d months, the defendant paying the line. IN TIIK COMMON IM.KAS. In the afternoon, tho case of James liat.tle vs. I). C. Floyd and W. F. Floyd Jr., for the recovery of real estate, was called, the Plaintiff representee by Ford D. Pryant, the Defendants by Johnson & Qualtlebaum. A jury was empanelled but at the close of plaintiff's testimony, the defendant moved for a non suit which was granted. Till KSDAY. The constable who had been sent with a bench warrant to arrest Zade ButTkin returned to court without his prisoner. His return on the warrant stated that he found BulTkin and he promised to come to court, but ho had failed to do so. II. N. Sessions and J. W. Wilson were at once sent to bring in the prisonei. The court proceeded with the appeal in Fx ('arte Lucinda Cooper, for admeasurement of dower, which had been begun on Wednesday morning but not finished. Able arguments were made on both sides. The judge reserved his decision as usual in such eases. The grand jury came in with their final presentment which was read in court, and they were forthwith discharged. An order of sale was taken in the case of J. A. Taylor vs. F, A. Prince for foreclosure. Petition of 'Rebecca Bennett for ehangeof name for herself and son. Petition granted as to Rebecca Rennet ' Judgment by default was taken in J. NV. llolliday vs. A. N. Johnston. The case of A L. Lewis vs. J. W. llolliday, for specific, performance, was called, the plaint ill" represented by I'Vrd I). Bi vant, the defendant by Johnson & Quattlcbaum The dofer.se interposed a demurrer to the complaint on the ground that it did not state facts suflieicnt to constitute a cause of action. The demurrer was sustained and the complaint dismissed.
