The county is not to be bonded to meet the expenses as some will persist in believing. This is not the intention of the act at all. It provides for the levy of a tax of one mill on the dollar for tinpurpose of raising the money, and the voting of bonds is not mention ed in the act. J he tax of one mill be continued for as many years as are necessary to rais-- 'lie amount required for the work. No man who has the good of his county at heart should allow this matter >f a small tax to stand in the way of his supparting the measure. The amount is too small to grumble over. Those who feel any county pride will have an opportunity to show it on Aug. 20th, by vot ing for the now court house. Wo understand that the question of location will prevent so.no from voting in its favor. We should remember that the location cannot be arranged to suit every man in the town and in the county Look upon the matter from a patriotic standpoint! The election is to decide the question of a new court house for the county for many years to come. If we can't have the building where we wan'l it, dots have it where we can got it. Hotter anything than nothing. And the people may rest assured that if the now court house is carried, the lo cation will be uftcrwtrds attended to, with less trouble than some may suppose. Cio>d Roads'Needed. Editor II kralp'?Please allow mo through the columns of the IIkrald, to call attention to the roads and bridges in this part of Horry county. As taxpayers, the citizens of the upper townships of this county feel that the roads and bridges here abouts are entitled to the same consideration and attention that the same public institution receives in other parts of the county. County Supervisor Todd appears indilTevent to the conditions and needs of this section, and #in?f the appeals of our people. Luke Swamp bridge (the new one) and especially the road leading into the Little Pee Dee at the Sandy Bluff crossing. When we mention these bad roads and bridges, we are told that we should go to Conway with our tobacco and cotton and not cross the Pen Doe. Some of our Conway friend even suggest that it is the want ? patriotism and county pride whie! causes us to sell our produce ii another county. This is all stuff to those of us who live nearer other markets, ard have better roads ex cept in our own county. We pay our taxes and demand that we be treated fairly in the matter of public roads and bridges. 1 do not say that we will avail ourselves of the remedies at our com mand, but it is only fair to consider the possibilities in case necessity forces the people to protect them-1 selves in the ways available.. j What would Conway think of the situation should the townships bordering on the Pee L?>r? l .nil VUUl/iUUC under the provisions of the consti tution of the State to ask the Gov ernor to order an election in the territory named, and then a two thirds vote in favor of becoming a part of our sister and adjoining county?Marion? On the other side of the Pee Dee are good roads, and ?are being made better by public and private means. Doubtless these good people across the river would extend to us a strong hand of welcome and help us with roads and bridges as well. What we want, demand, and will have, is relief?our part of the public moneys and labor for the public roads and bridges. If Supervisor Todd cannot and will not do what we think is right and just, then it. is time for us to appeal to the ballot box for our pro tection in the county, or out of the county. Last Tuesday was tin* day tixed for the candidates for State ollieos to address the people In re. Most of the candidates arrived on Monday, bat one or two came in on the train Tuesday morning. It had been ar arranged for the people of the town to entertain them while here, and as fast as thoy arrived limy were met at the depot and assigned to their homes. Most of those who arrived on Monday, spent the night at Myr tie 1 hutch. The meeting was held at tin court house, and the room was pack ed to its utmost capacity. The meeting was called to ordet at about 10:110 o'clock by the lion J. A. McDermott. who introducot as the lirst speaker on the program the candidates for Comptroller Gen oral, Messrs. N. II. Sharpe, A. W Jones, G. L. W alker and N. VV Ilrooker. They had but 5 minute.4 in which to speak and briefly statcc' their platforms. All of them had some friends in the crowd.
