It has been sickening from the beginning,
the incident, some things
that have been said about it, and
most everything connected with it.
There seems to be some misunderstanding
among the people about
when the commutation road tax
must be paid this year. According
to the opinion of the attorney
guuerul on the subject, the
time for paying this tax is extended
to the 31st of March, just the same
as other taxes. If a person liable to
toad duty pays this tax before that

for the year.
The value of a mixture of clay
and sand in yood road building is
demonstrated on the sidewalks of
this town.
Some years ago, the sidewalks a
long Main street were covered with
those warped, high edged boards.
Those boards are yet fresh in the
memory of many who had the misfortune
to lose their shoe heels between
the cracks. You had to be
careful and step exactly in the middle
for fear th it the longer end
might fly into air and send you, body
and soul into the sand. Then the
boards were one day removed and
and the sidewalks were like ash
bobs from one end to the other. Clay
was then added to the sand, and everybody
will testify to the good
sidewalks we now have along Main
street.
The people have become so used to
special legislation along-certain lines
that the> will find it hard to do
without it. But our supreme court
has determined that they must. Be
fore the passage of the general county
govern mailt law at the last session
of the Legislature, county government
was not exactly the same,
perhaps, in any two of the forty
counties of the State. Under the
constitution, as lately construed by
the court of last resort, a great
number of these special acts, passed
of course, with a view to the situation
and needs of each particular
county, were worth no more than so
much waste paper.
The Washington correspondent
of the News and Courier says that
Congressman Scarborough will have
no opposition in his candidacy for
re-election this year, but ru nor hast
it that Mr. James Norton will entor
the race. This may or may not j
be true, but if itis, Mr. Norton cer tainly
has enough friends in the
district to make the race interesting j
