We agree with the rest of the
Newspapers that the fight in the
Senate, between two South CJi.roli
na Senators, was disgraceful conduct
on their part; hut that it is a (lis - j
erace to the State of South Carolina
to the extent that some of the papers
declare, we deny. While personal
combat on the lloor of the Senate.
may disgrace the combatants
themselves and put them in eontempt
of that dignified body, yet we
do not see how their conduct can
east a reflection upon the fair name
of the State these Senators represent.
Again we do not like the way in
which some of our state and county
paperscodeavor to cast all the blame
in the matter upon the senior senator,
Tillman. This is certainly very
unfair and is not warranted by the
facts. The e<Jtt6i* who tries to place
all the blame upon Til man, and says
nothing of McLaurin, or if he says
anything about McLaurin, tries to
clear him of blatne, is actuated by
prejudice, brought over, perhaps,
from former da.\s and occasions.
Both arc to be blamed. Charge
made by Tilman caused McLaurin to
give the "lie", but charges have
been made on both sides. The charges
made by McLaurin arc as ugly
as those made by Tilman. We blame
McLaurin for calling Tilman a liar
at such a time and place juot as much
as we blame Tilman for striking
him, Many people would have
blamed Tilman more had ho taken
the insult and done nothing.
We have n< especial interest in
the matter, further than like the
rest of the people, we deplore the
occurrence, and ' ? the inf?i?Act nt
fairness and justice, we would like
to see the blame placed where it
properly belongs, upon both of the
Senators. Any one that takes advantage
of the opportunity to vent
his malice and prejudice upon one of
the parties, while nothing is said
about the other, simply shows that
he is not looking at the matter in
ony spirit of fairness, and his motives
appear plainly upon the face of
what he has to Lay.
If this trouble leads to a full inves
tigntion of the charges that have
been made on both sides, it will perhaps
serve a good end after all, and
some people may not be sorry that
it occurred.
Last year was marked by prog
rcss^and improvement in both town
and couuty. This has begun with
promise of still greater lesults than
its predecessor* Now buildings continue
to go up all over town.
Ouu exhibit at the Exposition is
not what it should be, and nothing
but a lack of interest on the part of
the people is the cause. We are not
referring to those who did feel some
interest in the matter and contributed
specimens. Censure should fall
upon those who had'the opportunity
and means to help and failed to do it.
What will be the history of Conway
this year as a tobacco market?
Everything depends upon the good
management of those immediately
concerned in J he business and the
co operation of all our business men.
Have we done our duty in the past?

business men and all, ask and answer

sharp and the Solicitor proceeded (
with swearing witnesses for the
grand jury.
His Honor in his charge to the |
Grand Jury, touching upon the need t
of a new and more commodious Court |
House and Jail, said that the people (
of Horry were a historic people, and j
that the improvements along the ,
li h? of railway and in the county ,

progressive people, a id a thriving
people, and that the only evidence of
a want of progress is the Court ^
House and Jail, but that lie was (
glad to hear that steps had been |
taken looking towards the building j

hoped when he came here to hold
court again that they would be com- >
pleted and that justice would he ad ^
ministered in a court house worthy j
of Horry county and its history.
The judge remarked that so far as
ho recalled this is the only Court ,
House built in the olden time which ,
survives. All the other counties of
the State have found it necessary to
build larger and more modern Court
Houses and Jails, suitable to pros (
out needs and development, where
the people may assemble and hear
the trial of eases, and where the
public records may bo safely kept.
The State vs. Hardee and llarn
hill for larceny of live stock was i

The State vs. \V. A. Hardee for
malicious mischief was continued.
The State vs. I'Yank 1 lessen 1 vio
lation of the dispensary law, was
called and tried in the defendants
absence. Guilty, with sealed sentence.
The court then adjourned earlier
than usual on account of the good
roads meeting
Court reconvened at ' ) o'clock and
the Solicitor put Joseph JOlliott to
his plea. His plea was "not guil
ty" and hiscounccl announced thai
they would be ready by Wednesday "

it- He made some valuable
suggestions as to the best
methods of keeping up the roads,
and paid a tribute to the progress
he had seen in the county. His remarks

were listened to with-the deepest
interest.

for governor in the e lining campaign.
