relation to county government and

dead letter or. the statute books and
general laws for the whole State
must be passed. This will require
considerable c ;re and will doubtless
take up much id the time of the law
making body.

now, and some of the articles contributed
are decidedly of the fire and
brimstone kind We are not cer
tain, bul the local readers of these
papers .nust be getting tired of sc
much stuff all of the same kind.
One correspondent expresses himsell
very freely to thir, effect. It appears
to us that the majority of the
people of Marion county are oppos
ed to the new covnty idea, for the
reason, among others, that the for
mation of a new county will increase
taxes The town of Dillon will ol
course be benefitted by becoming a
connty seat and therefore has some
reason for the fight that is beinjj
made through her paper and in other
ways.
Tiik school problem in this county
is one which should be careful)}
studied by every good citizen ant
educator in the county. An article
written by <4S" in our last issue
states facts which we know must b(
true and hate to be forced to believe
Are we doing our duty toward .the
advancement of education? Eacl
should ask this question, and if w<
arc not doing our full duty, tun
over a new leaf. In some cases pco
pie inay be too poor to send theii
children to school, but one fact whicV
we all know to be tr ie is. that man}
people in * his county are able to ed
ucate their children, at least givt
them a common school education
and yet they keep their children
home. The way to change this con
dition of things perhaps, is to gei
the people awakened to a sense o
the importance of education, if this
is ever possible.

The (Georgetown) Outlook has the
following to say abouMhc response
of Congressman Scarborough to the
toast " South Carolina'' before the
Palmetto elub, on New Year's eve
in Georgetown:
"Congressman It. H. Scarborough
eloquently responded to this toast
He is a gentleman of fine physique
and clear and mellow voice, chaste
and beautiful in bis language, he at
once captured his audience. His
speech will long bo remembered by
those present at the 19th annual ban J
quct of the club. There was no 1
greater pleasure for him than to J
stand on the threshold of 1902 and j
respond to the toast of South Caro- 1
linn, lie handled his 'subject in a '
scholarly manner '.
An Entertainment at Wnnamni

A very pleasant entertainment
.vas given at Wnnamaker Academy
on the night of Dec. 27th.

Jollie instructress in music, with
their friends and pupils, got up n]
concert and other entertaining ex i
erciscs for the occasion
The large hall was tastefully decorated
with ivy, holly and palms
Hy half past seven, the hall was
filled with an expectant audience,
and the exercises began, promptly
it eight o'clock.
The lirst number on the program
was a song, "Happy Greetings,"
by the school.
Then followedu recitation, "Aunt
Jemima's Courtship," by Miss Rumh
Klvi'i^ton, who delivered it in
such a manner that the uudicuct
could imagine Aunt Jemima telliiur
it herself.
Noxt was a tableau. "Rock of
Af/es.
The next number was an instrumental
solo by Miss Fannie Jollie,
the rendition of which proved the
touno lady's musical talent.
Then came a recitation, "Ken j
tueky Philosopher." by Miss Sallie
Conerly and Master Carlton Hooks.
Miss Conerly exhibited line talent
as an elocutionist, and you would
think from Master Carlton's looks,
that he really "stole datjwatermillion."
Then followed a son#. "The Moon
Is Reaming," by Misses Mattie
Hammond, Missouri and Oussie
Williamson, and Messrs. Vance
Hooks and Charley and Herbert
G rainier.
Next a tableau, "Kvcuing Devotion,
".by three little twirls.t ~f.
This was followed by an instrumental
solo, by Miss Jollie.
The ninth number was a very
amusing dialogue "Politics," by
Miss Gertrude Tyler and Charley i
Grainier in which lie endeavored to
explain the political situation of the
day.
Then came "Dixie" which thrilled
the hearts of all.
After the exercises, ull were invited
to the supper room where a supper

One. of the most mousing functions
of the^'evening,1, was a^cake-walk,
which was declared by the speaker
'? who delivered the cake, to beat any
i thing he had ever seen except a mule
race.
Then came the closing song,
"hood Night Ladies,' by the school.
' The evening was very much en* ,
. joyed by all present.
The amount realized was thirtyfive
dollars and fifty cents, (fcdS.&O).
which will be used to purchase a library
for the school.

The detai's of a horrible tragedy,
which occurred the latter part of
last week, in Floyd's township two
miles from Wanamaker, reached

Joe Elliott shot, and almost in stantly
killed W. If. Floyd.
There was a difficulty between the
parties in the eat ly morning, near
the residence of the deceased, and it
is said some blows were passed. After
this they seemed to be on better
I terms, and walked a half mile together.
Elliott passed Floyd's house
several times alter the early morning
quarrel, and was passing the
? place the fifth timo with some of his
sons in a wagon. As they were
r passing along the lane near Floyd's
house, Floyd was seen walking some
distance ahead of the wagon. Joe
' Elliott, took a gun which was with
. him in the wagon, jumped from the
, vehicle, stepped around in tho road
ahead of the arimals, and shot Floyd
killing him almost instantly.
- An inquest was held by magisf
trate Floyd and tho jury found that
k the deceased came to his death by
means of a shot gun in the hands of;
5 Joe Elliott.
Elliott passed on down the road
after the deed was done.
There are some stories about Elliott's
going to Nichols after the j
quarrel, to get the shot with which j
he loaded the gun, but we know not ,
' how true.
