of interest transpires in your neighborhood,
call it to the attention of
our correspondent, if we have one
near the place, and you know who
he is; if there is no correspondent,
write it up yourself and send it in.

the item in print will not only be a
pleasure to the o ic sending it in, it
will he a benefit and a pleasure to
people in other sections of the county.
Send us the news from every
corner of the county and lets make
the paper better this year than it
has ever been before.
Fakmkks should be careful about
the fertilizers they buy this year.
Last year they used more than usual,
their crops were short, and some
failed to meet their obligations. In
some sections of the county, the
complaint was general, that the fertilizers
were lacking in necessary ingredients,
and consequently did the
crops very little good.
A mistakeonade by some farmers
is, that they neglect the many opportunities
they have of making
good fertilizers at home. The home
made fertilizer is not as good as I
the purchased article, you have to
use more of it lo see the effects, but
it creates no big bill for the farmer
to pay iu the Full he can make it
and use it at v -ry little cost.
Therefore sec to it, that the pigpens,
cow lot and stables, and even the
chicken house, have plenty of litter
from time to time. There aie many
ways in which the farmer can start
a compost heap during the year.
Everything that is of value as a manure,
should be taken care of and
never allowed to go to waste. And
if the farmer buys a fertilizer, he
should be careful to buy a brand that
has been found to be alright by experience.
The 5chool Problem in Horry.
The census of 1000 discloses a situation
that ought to interest every
man ir, Horry county. The percent:n:

the State. Out of a total white malr
population, of voting age, of 3537.
there are 751 who cannot read and
write. About one fifth or a ittle
over are illiterate. This is a reflcc
tion on our county. We have no
one to blame for this situation but
ourselves. Apart from the refining
and elevating influences of education
the practical duties of citizenship
demand at least a rudimentary 'education.
In recent years our school
fund has been largely increased; and
schools have multiplied, but there
are hundreds of children both boys
and girls that never attend school
It is a serious condition and parents
owe it to their children not only
but to the community and the State
to send their children to school even
though it may require a sacrifice on
their part to do so.
The day has passed when a man
can get along without education.

The Time for Paying Taxes. 1
The policy of extending the time ,
for the payment of taxes, each year,
is a question upon which there are 1
different opinions. The Auditor of
Orangeburg county expresses him ],

thy article in the Columbia State of '
a few days ago. The discontinuance '
of the custom, would of course, les
sen the work of the auditors and
treasurers. This fact, no doubt, inflnonces
to a great extent, the views
expressed by the.Orungeburg officer

In times of disaster, as whole seeI

reason for beginning the custom,
and it has been so long continued J
that the people expect it as a mat ,
tor of right. ;
We arc aware that the rich cor- '
porations, business men and others,
who arc amply ablo to pay their
taxes in time, and should pay in j
time, always take advantage of the 1
extension and do not pay their taxes
in many cases, until the last mom- '
cut, but this is the less of two evils. ;
The good that is abceomplished by
giving time to the masses of the !
poor people, more than overbalances
the trouble which comes from |
the withholding of their taxes oy
the wealthy few.
An extension of the time may
not be necessary every year,, espe
eially in years of prosperity, our <
contention is, that it is not right to 1
discontinue the custom under any |
and all circumstances, and in no

and the people expect it.
The year just ended has been a 1
bud one for our farmers. Many
haye been unable to pay their debts. t
