look back over tlie year that is about
to end and see the mistakes we have
made, the opportunities we have
missed, the advantages we have
allowed to slip by ungrasped. We

a higor standard of living rather
than ti> a lower. All of us are wiser
by one yea l's experience than we
were when wc started out upon the
year that is soon to expire.
Congressman It. R. Scarborough
ha> introduced in congress a bill
providing for the erection of a public.
building in Florence. We hope
he will be successful, and it is probable
that he will. The I J. S. Treas ury
is in a plethoric condition and
the building of government buildings,
wherever needed throughout
the country, would seem an excel |
lent method of reducing the surplus,
and putting the money back in circulation.
It is certainly free from
the principal objection of the ship
subsidy scheme, which is nothing
less than the rankest kind of class
legislation?voting the people's money
into the pockets of a few rich ship
owners and builders, who are really
offering nothing in return. But iaside
from all this, the building is really
needed in i 'lorence and we hope
she will get it. Marion Star.
The growth of Conway during the
past two or three years is the remark
of every visitor. We trust
that when another year shall have
passed away still greater improvements
will have been made As a general
rule, so far as we have been informed,
the farmers who planted tobacco
this year were satisfied with
the results. A majority of them
will say that it paid them better
than cotton. It is comparatively a
new industry in this county and
some of our farmers planted it this
year for the first time. We want to
see the industry grow, and we hope
all those having lands which they
believe will suit the weed, will give
it a trial next year. It is a good
plan to diversify crops and never
plant too much of one thing Quite
often u farmer may have land suitcd
to both cotton and tobacco within
the same field. In this ease ho
can plant the cotton land in cotton
and the tobacco land in tobacco If
the season dosen't happen to suit one
crop and it fails, he will have the
other to fall back upon.
The New Year.
This is the last issue of the old
year. Hefore the Jlf.rai.d again
makes its appearance, t he old year
will have passed silently away into
the memories of the past, and a new
year will have begun its course.
What the new year contains for us
all, is something entirely unknown.
Its history cannot now be written.
What it is to bring forth is wisely
withheld from us. It is preditcd,
by some that the coming year will
be a hard one for the masses of the
mom.nt. to go to tho. bot
people, that the short crops of the
year almost to cud will cause the
price of provisions, next year, to be
high, and the short money crops
will depress the circulation of mon
ey. One of our exchanges predicts
that corn will be at least <1.50 per
bushel, and his view of the coming
year is in other respect very gloomv
We have no such extreme views concerning
hard times ahead. We do
not beliete that the year 1002 will
be as marked for its universal pros
perity as some of its recent predecessor:,
but^therc are no substantial
foundations for some of the predictions
of hard times that are oeirg
made. The now year is likely to be
a good crop year. It is not often
that we have two bad crop years in
succession. If the farmer's main
money crop is short this year, this
fact makes it likely that the .Mime
crop will command a better price

As we have said, the coming year
belongs to the future, no man can
tell, with certainty, what the results
of the year will bo. Considering
everything, as we view the situa
lion, the year is full of promise.
Feature of the Midway, the!
Great Silver Horseshoe.
As the leading leature of the Midway
of the South Carolina Interstate
and West Indian Exposition,
there has been erected for beautiful
Jim Key a very handsome and unique
theatre, designed by Chief Architect
Gilbert, the eminent architect
of the Exposition, this being the
only one of the Midway buildings designed
by him 'lhe front rcprei
scuts a great. glittering horseshoe,!
forty live feet in height, pointed in!
silver, gold and ivory The seating'
capacity is nearly 1,000, a special
gallery being erected for colored
people. The Auditorium is handsomely
decorated, and a heating
plant lias also been installed, and it
was the first building completed on
the Midway.
The teacher of beautiful Jim Key,
many say, is equally us wonderful as
the horse, for it took Dr. Key seven
years to educate him?a wonderful

The marriage ol Miss Jessamine
Ruck to Mr Donald \ran Richardson
of Whitevilio, N. C., occurred at 'i
o'clock on Tuesday, at the home of
the bride's sister, Mrs. II. M. Tolar,
2 Highland Park, Itov. Dr. Perry
oflioiating.
The house was beautifully decorated
with palms and laurel. The
bridal party standing beneath a
bower of Southern mistletoe. The
bride was proceeded by Miss Dorothy
R. Little, of this city, whoacted
as maid of honor. Her gown was of
light blue silk muslin over blue silk,
aud she carried a shower bouquet
of pink carnations. The bride wore
an exquisite gown of white crepe do
chine over white silk, and carried
white roses. Her veil of white tulle
was gracefully (taught with her engagement
ring, and she wore the
gift of the groom, a circular pin of
pearls and diamonds.
Mr. Richardson was attended by
Mr Charles Smith, of Augusta,
Georgia, who acted as best man. A
receotion followed the common\*
and Mr and Mrs. Richardson left
lor an extended trip to New York,
Philadelphia and Washington, and
will be "at home" to their friends
at Hucksport, S. C., after January

on recently, I visited the South
Carolina Interstate and West Indian
Exposition. While there is yet
much tobodoncut the ''Ivory City"
before the buildings and grounds
will be completed, and the exhibits
all properly installed, 1 am pleased
to state that the Exposition promises
to be a splendid success, and
will be well worth a visit a little la
tor?ottering, indeed, a rare opportunity
of which every one in I lorry
county would do well to take ad
vantage.
With much pleasure I noticed that
the exhibits from our county?so far
as they go compared favorably
with those from other sections ? f
this State; our forest exhibits, while
not complete as to varieties, being
the finest that 1 saw in the Southi
Carolina building Credit for this
is largely due to Mr. G. K. Sessions,
and to him I desire thus publicly
to express my sincere thanks.
Our exhibit of woods covered the
following: Short Straw Pine, Hose
mary Pine, Maple, Hlack Ash, Poplar,
Elm (one variety), Sweetguin,
Hickory, White Hay, Magnolia, Cy
press, Dogwood, White Oak, Water
Oak, Ked Oak, Post Oak, Hluckgum,
Chinquapin. Persimmon, Mulberiv,
Holly, Cedar and Walnut, the two
hist named not being line specimens,
and I would like to secure lincroncs.
We have, in this county, quite a
number of other varieties of woods,
many of which I may not be able to
mention, but 1 would be pleased to
secure at least one good speeimon of
each to add to our exhibits?the

urge every one to make personal
effort to aid us to make Horry's
place in the picture one of which we
may all feel justly proud.
