This is the season of the year when
the farmer should keep himself busy,
cleaning out ditches and drains, re pairing
fences, making compost
heaps, and attending to the thousand
and one other things, which,
when all done, put him in readiness
for a good crop next year.
Wk thir.k that wheat could be
made a profitable crop oy some of
the farmers of the county if they
could be induced to plant it. Who
dreamed a dozen years ago that tobacco
would We the money crop that
it is to-day in this county? It only
remained for the people to take hold
of it and learn it. So it might be
with wheat.
By an order signed by the- presid
ing judge at the last term of court,
that part of the grand jury's report
relating to ti.o subject of a new
court house, ? as required to be
served upon to delegation in the
Legislature. The order has been
.complied with a . ! the public will
await with interest, the action that
may be taken by the Senator and
the Representatives.
Theuk are some people in the
county who, it seems, -have been
misinformed concerning the stock
law. They are under the erroneous
impression that the exception ex
emptintr llorrv eountv from
provisions of the stock law as it
was originally passed, had a time
limit after which the law would apply
to this county, the same as to
others, and the fences would have
to be torn down and the cattle and
hogs pastured. This is of course
untrue, the law was passed, as the
generality of other laws are passed
by the Legislature, with no time
limit as to the force and effect of
any of its provisions, and to remain
a law of force upon the statute books
until amended or repealed by an
act of the same body that passed it.
The cherry tree fraud has been
exposed and the prediction made
all along by some of the newspapers
has come to pass. Warrants have
been issued for manipulators of the
scheme and the rascals have tied
from justice. The concern had no
agents at all in this county that we
know of, but in some parts of the
state, we are informed that it numbered
its agents by the hundreds.
These agents, inost'y young ladies,
will lose all the work they have done
for the concern as well as the $12. or
<*25. sent for the cherry trees
There are other concerns whose
plans arc similar it ?e?ms. to the
scheme employed by the Amo>
Owen cherry tree concern. Against
all these we warn our readers, and
advise them to Ik? sure of the responsibility
financial and otherwise
of the firm or individual seeking to
employ them before they invest
either their time or money.

to the South, when we consider
that to it will lie referred, the
bills introduced for the purpose of
reducing representation from the
Southern States If iho pending
measures are pressed, the South
will bo in need of the strongest kind
of help on this committee. Mr.
Scarborough's appointment to this
committee, opens up a splendid field
wherein he can render service to
the State. Of course he will not be
found lacking when the interests of
his State requires his best efforts,
along this line or any other that
tnay chance to come up in the National
Legislature.
Fraudulent Advertisers.
Some cheap magazines which
tlood the country are fuller than ever
of fraudulent advertisements de
signed to catch the unwary. A gentleman
who lives in the Gurlev section
was recently defrauded by one
of these concerns which advertised
to give a sewing machine freo to
any party who would sell a certain
amount, of medicine in the neighbor
hood. The advertisement stated
that it was just to introduce the
medicine in different sections of the
country. The medicine was ordered
by the gentleman referred to, who
sold i* and remitted the money for
it, requesting that the premium be
sent immediately, lie has the company's
receipt for the money but
they have not sent the premium,
and since they received the money,
they cannot be heard from.
Many papers are full of such ad
vei tiscments as these. We warn
our readers against having anything
to do with them. When an unreliable
lirm offers something for nothing,
or virtually for nothing, you
may ho sure they are frauds. Take
up no such offers unless you arr
sine that the person who makes it
is reliable and trustworthy.
