MDMraflUHUOL A ' TftX V'l THURSDAY NOV. 28th. 1001 Tiik Gathmnn mm, which !h?ss ITantui forced on the government at an enormous expense, has proved a bad failure. Tiik jjroat ift'owth of the trusts in thiseountrv. il much humor eontin nod, if no check i> eventually placed around them, will make it impossible to spend a dollar without adding something to their profits. Tiikuk's many a man in this world who thinks he could run his neighbors business muci. better than his neighbor ;*an run it himself. Now often this kind of man is neglectful and incompetent in the management of his own affairs! Thanksgiving. This day is set apart as a day of national thanksgiving. All the principal places of business, nil over this great country, are closed, and the day is being observed by both the high and the low. What have we to be thankful for? The quest-ion will be answered in a thousand different ways according to the condition and the state of mind in which we find the persons who answer. That some people arc never thankful, no matter how well nrovidenco may favoi them, is a true saying. There are thos.' who are never satisfied with anything, they are never treated rightly by other people, never get their just rights, and, in their own min s, their rendition is much worse than anybody 's else. To them there is nothing that is as good as it should be, they have no blessing tha1 is not coupled with some evil which more than overbalances, and they are never thankful because they think they have nothing tobe thank ful for. What a good thing it is to know that all people, are not like this! As a general rule the majority of mankind is different. To them, the hori/.an of life, is not always vercast with darkness, with not a sin gle ray of sunshine They see some good in everything created. They believe in the blessing of an all wise ^ ! Providence, and have m their hearts the spirit of Thanksgiving. While some of our people may feel 1 gloomy over the results of this year, which it goes without saying, has not been as good as last year, f<?r our farmers, and consequently for our businessmen, yet there is much for which we should be profoundly thankful. While short crops were predicted all along, it isevident that our farmers all over the land, while they may not have much to spare for luxuries, yet have pionty of the necessaries of life. No famine or pestilence has swept the land, as they have some portions of the world. The masses of the people are in fair ; ly good circumstances. All the I business enterprises of our town and county are doing reasonably i well. Tho future is full of bright i to pes.
