Titk short crop this year, is having
its effect on business, as any
casual observer can see.
V
!t is stated tli.it there arc only
three Republican memWrs in the .1
Georgia Leyrislat ore and one of them 1
has offered a resolution censuring j
Roosevelt for asking"a negro to his
dinner table. r
No matter what the opinion of tiie 1
Court of Inquiry may be, the people
have already decided in Schley's fa- i 1
vor. Tliev feel satisfied licit l<<> m< i

ted tlie part of a bravo and ellioient j
officer in every respect.
Tnk clay which was placed upon s
two of our principal s' roots, is now
doing an abundance of good The
remaining streets of the town g
should be treated in like manner just 1
as soon as tno town can bear the ox- >
penso, and the avenues should come 1
in for their share of attention too. j
Wo arc told that the expense of 1
overlaying with clay is not very (
great.
Tiik people of the county seem |
quite divided in opinion on the question
of the "no-fence law." Per- *
hops the better way t<> 'settle the ,
matter, if settled it is ever to be, is
to leave it to the ballot box, and then
fix the law in ecordance with the
wishes of the m ijority of the poo
pie. >
Ex Senator IV. tigrew thinks gov- (
eminent ownership of railroads t
would be a winning national issue.
So it might, but if the government *|
was to be of the trusts, and by the
trusts, as at present, where would I
the advantage of the people come in?
This country needs a govennent that '
will control the trusts, and not he f
controlled by them, worse than any- '
thing else.
(
t
Does it pay to run a passenger
train on the Conway Branch of the 1
W. C. & A, Railroad? The Atlan- *
tic Coast Tjinepeoplo say that it does (
not. But, as we view the matter, l
this is not the question to be con- i
sidered in determining the question 1
whether we shall have passenger ^
service or not. Dors the railroad
receive enough profit from both f
freight and passenger, to justify it 1
in giving us both freight and pas J
senger service? This is a more cor- \
rect form of the question. We are 1
ready to admit that the net profits '
to the road will be Jioro if the passenger
train is discontinued, it costs
less of course to run one train than
to run two. Cur contention is that
they can run both trains and yet c
earn a fair living profit. The
amount of freight handled hero is ?
constantly increasing as everyone
knows and it is but reasonable that (\
passenger traffic will do the same v
thing. As the railroad is a corporation,
and as such, enjoys rights j
not granted to the private citizen, a
itshould be required to give the public
the best service which its earn ^
ings will permit
