The Times in Error.
i
Tl?e Munning Times,, one of McLanrin's
most ardent supporters, in 1
its issue of Oct. 2nd, in the course of |
some editorial remark's in regard to <
a paragraph clipped from the News
and Courier, uses the f Mowing language.
which .nightdo this paperan
injustice and create a false impression
upon the minds of those not in |
a position to know belter:
"The Laurens County News, if we (
remember right is edited by a man
who at one time edited a paper in
Ilorrv county, and at that time Ins ,
paper was an ardent supporter of
Sampson l'ope, who was a Republi
can endorsed candidate for gover- (
nor. The Horry paper and the Columbia
State supported ''ope, and
now both of those editors are very
solicitous for the welfare of the J
Democratic party. Bah! Fool who? 4
Not the free white people of South
Carolina. Ben Tillman got up a |
system of political education, which (
resulted in educating the masses, (
and whenever politicians or news
paper editors, who in the days of
excitement resorted to all the means
that pulsion and disappointment j
could conceive of?those who gave j
aid to Rnmn't P.mo !irwl U W
Murray in their efforts to tear up
the franchise clause in our Consti- (
tution, so that our registration
laws would be distrojed- under- 1
take to act as our political monitors,
the people regard it as the t
interference of impertinent enemies."
(
In thus making the statement that
the editor of the Laurens News was
onco editor of an Horr> paper, at
that time supported Sampson Pope
for governor, not calling any names,
or making any further explanation,
the Times leaves it open for some
one to suppose that the Ukuai.d is
referred to.
The editor of the Laurens County
News is Mr. S. Frank Parrott, who,
it is remembered, edited the lude
pendent Republic, at that time the
only paper in Horry county. Not
long after editor Parrott left Horry
to join the army, the paper changed 1
hands and the old name of the Horry j
Herald was resumed.
4
But all these facts are well known i
to everybody in Horry county. The I
editor of the Times is wrong as he 1
often is. This paper has never in
anywise lent its support to a Republican
for governor. It did not I
do it when it had the name of Independent
Republic, us those gentlemen
who owned the paper at that
time will testify.
It is said that the farmer has the
most independent occupation in the
world. Experience teaches that the
truth of this proposition in particular
cases depends upon the efforts
and management of the farmer.
While some of our farmers arc independent
and contented, there are
others, who, from misfortune or bad
management are compelled to use
the proceeds of their crops before
they are harvest? \ They should
strive to get out of the toils of the
ilea sy?tein Instead of being a
year behind, get a year ahead. Live
this year on the proceeds of last
year's crop, instead of living this
year on what may i>e made this
.voir.
