THURSDAY, SHP. 5 1001 Tiik .sympathy of the laboring world is with the steel workers in their fight against the steel trusts. The right of the amalgamated association of steel workers to extend the field and influence or its unior, j isono which the trust magnates can not justly deny. The strike may continue for a Ion# time, but wo believe it will terminate in a victory on tho side of labor. Tiik Oftth session of Davidson College begins on Sept. th, with the prospect of a largely increased attendance. Dr. James M. Douglas, of South Carolina, has been elected to the Chair of Physics to take the place of Dr. Smith, the recently elected President, and Mr. John A. Drcwin, of Boston, Mass., has been 1 appointed Oymnasium Director. The shearer Biblical Hall is now being roofed in, and will soon Wo completed, and a new and handsome dormitory is being planned for the next session. Every citizen who has the good of his community at heart, should do all in his power to help to bring to justice, all violators of the law. We arc secure in our lives and prop erty in proportion to the strictness with which the laws are enforced. VV hen violations of the law come untier the observation of law-abiding citizens, the> should immediately take steps to have the violators prosecuted. They should not neglect it because they have not the time or because they do not wish to be mixed up in such matters, they should feel it tob '.heir duty to put the offender in the hands of the law. If every citizen would do hisduty in this matter, the criminal dockets of our courts would lie much shortci han they are. If our county exhibit at the South Carolina and West Indian Exposition, is to be what it should be, the township commissioners and all public spirited citizens who feel interested in this most important matter, must act and act now. The exposition opens on December 1st, and the time for preparation is getting short. I f wo do not set to work in earnest, time will speed away, and December 1st, will find us in the lurch. In last week s issue appeared a notice signed by J). A. Spivey, secretary of the county board, stating that C. 1*. Quattlebaum Esq. had been elected Superintendent of county exhibits. This is an important step in getting down to work. With the proper aid from the township commissioners and others, i t will be possible to get up a creditable exhibit. Let every one do his duty from now till the opening. Adrian Items. J. T. Jenrette of Conway visited relatives and friends here last Sun dav. The whistle 1*1 >ws, the bell rings and all uboard lor the lust and greatest excursion to Myrtle Ueach. I)u ring the afternoon there was sour rying %uround, with an oceasional stop and glance oy eager eyes at the tantalizing clouds, which would for one moment hang low, a> with u threat, then again sail away revealing the face of the king of day, who seemed to pledge his word they should not return, 'thinking all was well he ''lay him down in slumber sweet," when silently and suddenly the naughty clouds stole over, and vented their anger on the aggrieved crowd. Some hod crossed the river and others were on the flat when the down pour came, but it, would take a regular evelone or clcud burst to dampen the enthusiasm of as merry a crowd as were bent on taking in this excursion. The ear moved oil leaving the Jonah, perhaps, for we had not gone two miles before the rain ceased and the beautiful moon came forth in all her glory. It took just forty minutes to reach the gates of the new hotel, which only a few days ago was all lile and gaity, but now stands out in the moonlight like "some bamjuct hall deserted. We found u party in waiting, who had been spending the day on the beach, also a party of moonlight picnickers from Soeastee, and the time was spent in promenading t he moonlit strand by the sentimental inclined, and a wade in the sea by the extremely youthful. According to promise the whistle again blew at half past nine and there was a reluctant turn toward the train one couple was to relue tanl that tiirv were left on th strand, and wo can imagine thoi dismay when they saw the ear speeding away to the tune of "Tli girl I left behind me." We would like to make one criti eism on the otherwise handsome and comfort able coaches. The steps are rather high and cause someelVort in getting on and oil. We heard one party say they had dislocated sixteen joints of their back bom* and while that might have been a little exageration, it certainly takes a high stepper to get in and out with 00111ort. 1 M. Thornton who has been connected with the Mullins Warehouse business several years has joined the force of workers who are now making Conway heard of as a lirst-class tobacco market all over the United States. Mr (). I'\ Thornton is in the country this week tolling the advantages of Conway. We noticed several lots of tobacco last week at the Horry Warehouse going over thirty cents per pound. One lot reached, f>0 and another at 10 cents. The premiums offered by the merchants of Conway are attracting lots of tobacco to this market this week. We noticed quite a lot of hogs heads going down to the boat landing for Williamsburg county farmers last week.
