it not for the cool breezes which blow
almost constantly. There is not
very much rain during the Spring,
out I have been told that it commences
to rain about the middle o
June, and rains almost continuously
until about the last, of August
This part of South k lorida is perfectly
r.calthy. ! am located not far
from the entrance to Cliurlott's
Harbor We have good drainage
and by using artesian wells, which
dow with pure sulphur water there
is no cause for much sickness. Tho.->e
who use open well water have chills
and fever, but the fever lasts a few
days only.
The lands around here are what
we would call Savannah lands, but
they are much higher and more fertile,
especially near the creeks.
There aro line hammock lands here
dotted with tine orange groves
T lis part of South Florida is very
thinly settled, and consequently
there is lots of game. It is nothing
strange to see eight and ten deer in
a drove. There ure numbers of wild
turkeys, foxes and coons Here are !
the finest fishing grounds I ever
saw ?any kind from a perch tea saltwater
mullet. The. people got their
support from raising cattle, hogs,
oranges and pjiio apples. 1 would

tell me they realize something like
$15,000 to $18,000 per acre from
them.
The woods are full of cattle and
hogs. One gentleman, a Mr. King,
owns 75,000 head of cattle. The
hogs keen fat on the buds of the
saw palmetto, and are driven to
market in the same way as cattle
Turpentine is a new industry here
but I think the pine more productive
than the Georgia or South Carolina
pine. There are two dippings
up to April loth, and 1 think the
boxes are tilled with an average of
three streaks. There is a good ope
ning here for turpentine and saw
mill men. Lands sell from 50 cents
to $2.50 per acre, and government
lands as low as 12-\ cents per acre
The people are very wicked and
do not regard the Sabbath at all.
They hunt cattle, shoot and fish on
Sunday as on any other day.
I give your readers some idea of
the country in a brief way. Perhaps
I may gi /en more detailed description
of the country some time.
