Tiik pi'ico of cotton keeps steadily
going down, Last \\\ok it was back
to 8 cents. Wo hope tho prices will
be good this Fall, but there's no assurance
that they will be.
Tiik outlook for a good tobacco
crop this year in most sections of
the county is reported to be very
good. The farmers very generally
had good luck in planting good seed
and the plants arc looking fine.

all the differeir notions of the State.
The Representatives need information
as to the des res of the people
along the seashore n_jvgard to oysters
and clams, and would bo glad
to hear expressions of their views on
the subject.
Many of our most successful men
owe their success in life to everlastingly
sticking to one thing and putting
their souls into the work. Some
of them, perhaps a majority, are
men of no unusual mental ability,
but have gained success by applying
whatever ability they had in the
right direction and plodding onward
despite failures and drawbacks.
Thk jury in Williamsburg county
that tried Frank M. Player, last
week, for robbing the Kingstrce dispensary
are to be commended for
their prompt finding of a verdict of
guilty.
mi- 11 11 *
xihtc s iniraiy any doubt that ho
is the guilty man. The only evidence
upon which ho could be convicted,
was of a circumstantial nature,
and the attorneys for the defendant
labored hard to make a good
showing, but circumstantial evidence
is often the strongest evidence
of the guilt or innocence of the party
accused. There was no direct evidence
against him, but all the circumstances
surrounding the robberies
and even Player's own story was
evidence of his guilt.
At many places in the State, the
people, or a majority of them feel
great prejudice against the dispensary
law and those who arc connected
with its enforcement, and this
prevents them from taking the pr< per
interest in trying to hring violators
of the law to justice. This
should not be the case. Although
the law may be disagreeable to some.
j it is still a law of the State and it -?
violation is as 111 ui-ti a crime as the
violation of other laws. Tin man
who violates it deserves punishment
like any other criminal and the public
should he interested in seeing
that he gets the punishment which
: the law provides.
The authorities at Kingstrcc did
i not do their duty in that they ul!
lowed these robberies to go on under
their noses for so long without
taking steps to stop them. Hut when
at last the\ become aroused and
brought the guilty party befora the
bar of justice, the jury in whose
hands rested the enforcement of the
law did its whole duty and did it
nobly. \\V commend them as an
example worthy to be followed.

The Pecan tree not only bears one
of the most delicious nuts, but it is
one of the most hardy trees that
grows in the South, and makes as
fine a shade tree as the Elm or Maple
and no family ought to be without
a few trees. It would pay the town
authorities to do as the Erench authorities
do, plant nut bearing trees
on the sidewalks and get a revenue
therefrom. A town that would this
year put out a thousand trees on the
sidewalks at comparatively small
nuuivi, in t*. ii yi aio iiu tuinual
return of at least $500.00 and
eacliyear there would be an increase
until the income would reach from
three to live thousand dollars annually.
Enough to more than pay all
taxes of an ordinary size town.
The trees do well planted in cotton
and corn fields, and farmers can cultivate
the lands in crops of corn and
cot ton until the trees got to bearing,
and after they commence bearing a
farmer with ten to twenty acres has
a small fortune in his Pecan grove
and don't need to plant cotton and
corn. The tree is hardy and stands
the cold weather anywhere South of
Maryland. At Pine H'ufl. North Car
olina. there is a company that makes
a specialty of growing the young
trees for sale, and we advise the
town authorities, and all readers of
our paper to write the PincblufT
Grape & Pecan Company, Pirebluff,
N. C.t for circulars.
