Legislature will probably nmlcc a liberal approporiation to tlie South Carolina I nterstute unci West Indian Exposltion. f If the State is to spend anything in the way of advertising; there's no better opportunity ahead than the exposition. Onk of the lirst things done by the House of Representatives was to pass the joint resolution introduced by Hon. Josh Ashley extending the time for the payment of '.axes till March 1st. Many strong orgmncnts were made against it, hut we think the right action was taken in extending the time, in view of the fact that the time has been extended every-year for many years past and lias almost become a custom. It lias become natural for the people to expect it and it would work a hardship to discontinue the practice at once and without warningA Diiu.MMKii remarked a few days ago that he had been coming to Conway and doing business with her merchants for a long number of years and h: ! yet to lose a single cent in his b iness dealings with them. Conway had always been a good place for I sand her merchants were alw.i. able to pay their bills. This is the experience of one only of the many representatives of wholesale houses who make regular trips to the town. What he said is, we believe, as a general thing true. In ehe course* of his. remarks ho said that while Conway could develop a good deal of internal wealth, she yet needed some quick means of communication with the outside world so as to bring wealth in from abroad, and this we also sanction as true. We need a passenger train that will take us off and back again sooner. Another great help would be a daily passenger and mail boat bet ween this point and Ceorgotown. Improvement is the order of the day and we hope that something along this important line will bo uone in ino near lutare. I MF, committee of the grand jury that was appointed to look after the matter of building a new court house met the county supervisor hero a few weeks ago and on last salcsday their report was drawn up and placed before the commissioners of the county for their consideration. The committee decided to recommend in their report that a site for the new court house I e purchased from Mr. W. It. Lewis on 3d avenue in the suburbs of the town. Before the court house is changed from its preeent location, the effect of the change on the best interests of the business portion of Conway should be ruefully considered. If the court house be erected at the placed selected by the committee, business may gradually leave Main street and center nearer the court house. Will this be worse for Conway? Will it be in a J "maummr . - town of Conway's size to have the business stands Mattered 011 two different 'Streets or more, than to have them all on one principal street? These questions may not be easily answered, but they should be considered. If room can be had at the pluce where the building now stands, we think it would be advisable to build tlit? new court house there. It will doubtless be decided that the best way of raising the money for the m.d* l'takin/j is by issuing interest bearing bonds. Anyway it is arranged, it will bear heavy on the pocket of the average tax payer, and if the enterprise is carried out the greatest cart? should be axereised to* use the money to tlie best advantage of both the town and the county. And this is a subject ir which every citizen of the county should feel interested. Study the matters connected with it and jfive your views to others. Think over both sides of the question An Evil Without Profit. It is common report just now that in a short time the Toddville dispensary will t)o moved from the place it now occupies to a point near Hear Swamp inside the lines of Conway township. There may bo people in Conway who will dilTer with us in our op'.nI ion of the matter, but if a dispensary is tobe nlaced this near to tin; town, wo .soo no reason why it should make matters worse to locate it within the corporate limits. Take the dispensary into consideration where it is at present located. It is but six miles from town. Those who wish to patronize it lind it an easy matter to send after the whisky just whenever they happen to want. Those who do not patronize the dispensary where it is, would not do soil it were located in Conway. Let any one who will, observe the quantities of liquor brought to Conway from the dispensary and he will nelievo that it could be no more if the dispensary were located in the town. If t.he-dispensary o> moved it will be oifly half as far as it now is and just that much more convenient. It is apparent that so long as there is a dispensary so near, the town will have to stand all the evils of liquor drinking. So long as the dispensary is located just outside the city limits, just that long the town will no compelled to put up with the evil of drunkenness, without the benefit of a share in the dispensary profits. The profits from the Toddville dispensary amount to a good round sum every month. If this dispensary is placed as near to Conway as is contemplated, it had?as well be placed within the; corporate limits, for then the town will get its share of the profits. As long as it s outside, the town mil'st sulTer all the evils while the county gets all of the profits Conway is in need of all the revenue she can raise to provide better drainage, build up the streets and sidewalks, and many other improvements that we need not mention. A share in dispensary profits would be helpful just now. Let the people think about the matter and do whatever seems best for town and county. Thousands Sent Into Exile.
