Mr. Orton says tho wilt disoaso is now known to ooour on tho ooast of South Carolina, whoro it attacks tho tine sea island ootton, and at Dillion, Sailors, and other plaoes in tho same State, whero it attacks upland ootton Prof. F. It has boon reportod from many localities in Uoorgia, and is known to oocur in Florida and Arkan aas. It is oortain that this dis' aso is widely distributed through tho S >uth ern Statos, and it is probablo that it ooours in many places whoro it has not vot been distinguished from other trou bios, such as "rust" and tho effoots of lightning. Tho annual loss from tho wilt disoaso is very considerable. It is moro koon ly folt by tho individual planters than most oottun troubles, booauso tho disoaso remains in tho soil and grows worse, with oaoh suooooding crop. Ou tho sea islands of South Carolina alono a oaroful estimato indicates that noarlv. if not quite, onothird of tho land planted to high grado cotton is aflootod by this diseabo, tho larger portion of it ro badly that it is no longer profitable to plant it in cotton. Tho loss to tho planters of upland cotton in areas affected and tho diseaso is spreading rap tionally great. On ono farm in Dillon, 8. U., whero tho department has boon oonduoting somo experiments, fifteen acres of fino land aro alroady affootod and tho diseaso is spreading rapidly on this and adjoining plantations. Tho importanoo of tho disease, however, doos not lie so much in the amount of tho presont loss as in the dangor of its futuro inoroaso, for it niuit ultimately spread so rnuoh as to entail far greater losses and possibly throaten the life of tho industry unless tho methods for its control aro perfootod. Tho wilt iB vorv distinot from any other diseaso of ootton, so that thore need bo no diffioulty in its idontifiea tion. It usually makos it first appear anoe in tho spring about tho last of May, when tho plants aro six to eight inohos high. It appoars in well defined areas, whieh enlargo if ootton is plantod on the samo land again. The first outward indication of its prcsenoo is a dwarfed growth and unhealthy appcaranoo of the plants. Tho leaves turn yellow be tween tho veins, thoir margins shrivel up, and somo plants wiltand dio at onoo. In other plants tho progross of tho disease is often slow, and many of them live the entire summer and dio lato in the season. On cutting aoross tho stem of a diseased plant, tho woody part will be found to bo stained brown wherover tho diseaso is presont. In tho absenoo of micro scopio examinations, this brown discoloration of tho intnmil tisane is the beat ocular ovidonoc of the preaeooe of the wilt disease. Plants may partially rooovor from a severo at taok of tho wilt disoaso by the develop meat of strong lateral branohoa near the ground. Such plants may bo dis languished by theit dwarfed and bushy appearanoo and by the tondonoy of their branobes to lie prostrate on tbo ground The cause of the wilt diseaso of oot ton ia a fungus, neooosmospora vaain feota (Atk ) Krw. 3m , which attacks the plants irom the soil. It first ontcrs the smaller roots and aubs<quootly grows from thoso ints tbo taproot and stem, filling tho water ducts with its myetlium. Tho result is that the sup ply of food and moi-uuro oarried up from the roots ia greatly decreased and the symptoms dosoribed above aro pro duoed. The nature of the fungus has been fully discussed in bulletin No. 17 of this division, and it will not bo nooesaary to enter into details here, but only to outline tho aubjeot and to reeord aomo additions to oar knowledgo. The progress of tho disease is always low as compared with that of othor piant diseases. The period of incubation, or the time elapsing after the young seedling is exposed to the attacks of the fungus and before tho dis ease becomes manifost, is usually at least forty dajs and often muoh longer Muoh depends on tho individual plant itself. Tho conditions which favor tho progress of the fungus through the plant are not fully understood, but from some observations that have been mado it is believed that highly fertilized plants, growiny vigorously, suooumb more poorer than those whioh have grown on readily soil. In the early history of the wilt disease the oause was supposed by tho planters to be tho excessive applies lions or injudioious use of commercial fertilisers, and many of the leading planters in the sea islands mado careful experiments with various modifieations of their fertilisers, suoh as tho use of marl, salt mud, kainit, and lime, and the inorease or deorease of tho proportions of prosphorio acid and potash. Mr. W. G. Hinson of James Island, Booth Carolina, a very suooessfol planter, has informed tho writer that the retail of all these trials has been to oonvinoe those who made them that the disease can not be controlled i hp any changes in their system of fer tiliaing. Small tufts of roots grow from oaoh point of infeotion, doubtless on aooount of somo stimulus exerted by tho fungus. Sovoral short roots will thus start from a plaoo which would normal ly havo produced ono longor branch. Many of thoso litllo roots aro killed by tho fungus and others grow in thoir plaoon, so that tho tuftod appoaranoo of tho rootlots is tnoro pronounood lato in tho season. Tho samo result haB boon produced in tho laboratory by in ooulating seedling ootton plants with puro oulturos of tho oott)n wilt fungus. Similar root tuftB aro found associated with tho wilt disoasos of okra, oowpca, watormolon and oabbago, and thoy aro boliovod to be oharaotoristio of this class of root disoasos. Careful experiments havo boon made with a large number of substanoos applied to tho soil in tho hopo of killing tho fungus, but all tho results obtained up to tho present time indioato that there is no hopo of success in tho use of any fungioidos sprayed on tho plants or applied to tho soil.
