THURSDAY, JAN. 10 1<)01 !
Tiik tobacco industry has come to
Horry to slay, Dust year there was
a lit roe increase in the acreage over
1890, and this year, judging from all
the indications, there will again be
a large increase over the acreage of
last year. We have reports from
different sections of the county Idling
of tin* new bat as going up.
There are a few farmers who may
leave off their tobaeoo crops this
year, but the number of these is
small in proportion to the number
who will try tobacco this year for
the first time. The prospects for
Horry as a tobacco raisin# comity
are good.
Tiik recent lire burned two store
buildings situated on two of the best
business stands in the town. A
large brick building on each of the
lots made vacant will be a good investment
to the owners and more

occurrence of a week or two ago
than wooden buildings. Wo had
rather see wooden buildings than
none at all, a> a matter of course,
but brick build lgs are bettor and
if the owners < f the property are
able to put up bri k bui'dings we
see no reason wV. brick buildings
should not soon b> ;<n to go up.
It seems to be the prevailing opinion
that there is but little import
ant work ahead of the Legislature
which convened on last Tuesday,
but why it is that the work ahead
of it this year should be of less importance
than the work accomplished
by it last year, we are unable to
see. In fact there is no telling
beforehand just what work will come
before a general assembly. It may
seem, at first, that the body has but
little to do, but as the session ad van
ces. the work develops, and by the
time the body adjourns, a good deal
has been accomplished.
We think it is quite likely that the
Legislature, at its present session,
will have plenty to do. It will be
remembered that the I louse is new
with a large proportion of new men,
each one of whom will have his pet
bills to introduce. IJesides the flood
(if now lilllv I l)!ll will I... l..~ 1

there \Nill be the usual bills to repeal
the lien law, to regulate the privilege
tax on fertilizers, to regulate
hunting and fishing in the various
counties, to repeal and amend the
dispensary law, and a thousand and
one other subjects too numerous to
mention,
It is utter disregard and carelessness
of the best interests of local affairs
that leads a man f<> try to ptilt
down his county newspaper by saying
that he can get other newspapers
with more reading matter at the ,
same price. The average reader in i
Horry county finds more to interest '
him in the Horrv Hkmai.o than he 1
(i ifs in the Columbia Stale or New j
York World. There's move reading i

because they cover larger territories.
but how much of it is ol inter
est uml valu \ to the citizen of IIor
rv county? This is the question
which determines the value of the
reading matter secured. Thought
thinking man enjoys hiscountypa
per because* he is interested in the
intorprises of homo ami his home
people, lie takes other papers as n
matter of eourse to keep ap with
outside altairs. hut the matters
which interest him most are the
matters pertaining to home and
the e he oets in his loeul paper.
There must he something lacking
somewhere when a man loses interest
in his home affairs ami when a
man says that his county paper i*
not worth a dollar a year, he says it
in utter ignorance of the amount of
work and expens" that it takes to
tfet it oat.
Result of Carelessness.
Three robberies of the dispensary
at Kinfjstree within the space of a
year, seems to indicate a carelessness
on the part of both the ollievrs
of the law in Williamsburg county
and the citizens of thutcounty It
was certainly an net of criminal c ire
lessness for the county board of con
iroi to allow dispenser I'layer to be
without bowl under such circum*
stances. It is strange that the people
did not ask for a removal of the
board from ollico string that they
allowed th dispensary to bo kept in
a building that was unsafe and the
dispenser not required to deposit
t he money in some bank for safe
keeping The papers state that he
had not made a deposit in the last
month or t wo be Tore I he robbery.
The people should always wateh
carefully the men whom they have
placed in olliee. While they aiv apt
to have the ri^ht men in most instances,
they "slip up" sometimes
and the p jblic alTairs are placed in
the hands of men who care little for
anything except the emoluments of
the ofticos they fill. The people of
Kingstreeand Willhunsburg county
were unusually hard to take warning,
but they have become aroused at
last and will not leave a single stone
unturned.
Thousands Sent Into Exile.
Every year a largo 'lumber of poor
sull'erers whose lungs are sore and
racked with coughs are urged to go

would Not Plant Cotton.
Allow me space to say to the farmers
of Horry count; that if they
don't mind they will be caught in a
trap in 1001. A year or too ago we
got \ and ;> cents for our cotton.
In 11)00 tlicy put the price up. It
may be for nothing else than to get
us to buy more guano and make bigger
accounts. Suppose we have
these accounts to pay with I or f>
cent cotton.
The low price of cotton caused us
to go into raising tobacco. We
should never forsake our crops of
corn, rice, potatoes and peas. It
will not do to raise cotton and tobacco
to buy something to eat with.
But if we intend to plant a money
crop, let us plant tobacco for there
is live times as much money in it as
in cotton. Study the matter care
fully. Because you got S to 11 cents
for cotton this year, is no reason
you will get the same price in 11)01.
This is the view 1 take of the mattor
and if anybody takes the opposite
view 1 would be glad to hear from
him in the columns of the IIkkaM).
