THURSDAY, DEC 20 1O00 The Reason Why. The reply of the tail way authorities to the petition sent in by the citizens of Conway asking for a passenger train over the Atlantic Coast Line to this point, was published in our last issue. The main reason for refusing to 'give us the passenger train is, that the amount of business done on the road will not justify the expense of running another train, Let us look at the matter in the light of past experience and see whether it was not perfectly reasonable for the people of Conway to believe that the business done on this road was sufficient to warrant the running of another train. Of course, the petitioners did not know it to be an absolute fact, as they lacked the actual figures, but thej did know that from all appearances the business done by the railroad at Conway is now, at least, double what it was when the railroad first came to the town. If the railroad company could afford to run one train then and make money, as they evidently did, why could they n<?i afford to run two trains now and st 1 make money, if the business had l> en doubled? A few-years-ago it took the agent and employees at the de;? less than an hour to finish up their business every day when tr.e train came in. It now takes them three or four times as long toattend to the freight, and they arc often there until late at night. Who does not know that the number of stores in Conway has doubled within the last few years? Has not the tobacco industry ant the development of our agricultura resources generally, more thai doubled the amount of freights haul ed away? The population has increased, th< town is visited by a greater numbei ofoommercial travelers than former ly, and the people, being in bettei financial circumstances than former ly, naturally travel more than thoj did a few years ago. Considering these things, an< utility unin ? wnn'ii wr CUllllUt IlU'l) tion for lack of space, it i.s hard fo the people of Con way to undcrstan< why it is that the company eanno afford to give us a passenger trail on account of the small amount o business done. Wo cannot disput the statements made by the railroai authorities, because they are in ; position to know. We only knov what the appearances are. If tin business keeps on increasing, i seems to us, that a passenger trail will become an absolute necessity. - ? " ? - - ? Food Changed to Poison.
