The subject of electric lights for the
town should, we think, begin to
claim some attention from the town
authorities. The taxable property
of Conway has materially Jinercased
during the last year or two. The
population has been growing along ,
with the property and more money i
than formerly goes into the town }
* treasury from commutation street !
tuxes. The privilege tax ordinance .
now increses the revenues of the ]
town. It should I >t belong beforo
we are able to tu. 1 some attention
towards drainage. . dits and the like.
Many towns smaller than ours are
enjoying electric li ' ? and if we
keep on growing, there certainly is <
no reason why we should not have
these modern conveniences.
(JON way '8 second year as a tobacco
market will soon close. The success
attained during these two years
is very gratifying and we look for
ward lo the future as promising
many things for Conway as a market
for the golden weed. Wo had
the advantage of two warehouses
this season. The new warehouse as
was expected did not do as well as
the old one. but the old warehouse
had a marked increase of businoss
over lasi?ycar. The Farmers Warehouse
was not rented until rather
late in the year and there was not
sufficient time in which to advertise
for opening sales. Or. perhaps, ihc
house was rented in time, but the
managers neglected until too late to
do the proper amount of judicious
advertising. Hut let this be as it
may, this was the first experience o
the new warehouse, and it could not
be expected to do as well as one more
established. Jt takes time to establish
any business and no business
will pay until it has existed long
enough to become known and hos
worked up a sort of good will that
insures its success The Farmers
Warehouse will do bet-1 er noxt year
because il will be a voir older than
when it began.

gentlemen, Messrs. Jeremiah Smith

They held a meeting a few days ago
and permanently organized. They i
will, before Ion#, try to put into op
oration plans which they hope will '
result in securing a suitable and 1
creditable exhibit for the Independent
Republic. flu'1 he success of the 1
commissioners, whatever their matured
plans may be. will depend to a
groat extent upon the help and en '
courasroment that they receive from j
tlie people of tin1 county. Without
aid of this kind their cll'orts will fail,
u' tcrly fail. Therefore we wish to
see all hands become deeply interest
cd in the mutter of a largo exhibit
for this county.
There is to be a State building at
t lie expesit ion ami inside there will
be laid oil', .sections for the exhibits
of the dill ere nt counties of the State.
Now little it would make us feel
should the other counties of the
State all have beautiful exhibits and
our space unfilled or, if tilled, our ex
hibit should fail to be adequately rep
resent at ive of the resources of our
county. Suppose we make no cITort '
and let-the matter go by. then we
will become the jest of the other
counties.
Horry county needs a.i immense
unount of advertising. She's never
had the half she should have had.
Some of us, who live on the very
ground, hardly know what our resources
are, much less what our resources
are capable of; how then can
we expect the moneyed men of other
counties and other States to know of
5ur resources and their value. It
must be done by some sort, of ad
vertising. The exposition oilers the
nesl chance in the world for free advertising
Indeed, it is advertisi *g
which has an operation in cither of
two ways, if we get up a creditable
exhibit and have it at the exposition,
the advertising will be valuable and
will bring its returns; on the other
mud if we have no exhibit, this will
ue an advertisement, but not ol the
valuable kind, and it will bring evil
et urns.
