A sad accident befell the little
child of Mr. H. .1 Floyd in Galivants
Ferry township one day last week.
While no one was noticeing, it. got
burned in the yard so severely that
it died a short time afterwards. It
was buried on Friday.
Congress should forever put an
end to the sub-letting of mail contracts.

o'clock, the other to leave at 1 o'clock

lights for Conway. A certain individual
offers to furnish all the power
needed free of charge, if the town
will furnish the other necessaries.
Mr. Parker, the town Marshall, will
canvass the town in a few days to
see what the people are willing to
do towards this important matter.

to hear talk of it.
The racket store has been opened
by Mr. W. M. Chestnut in the
Murrell building next door to
J. 'Causey & Co. He will do business
at this stand until the slojk of
goods belonging to the late H. It.

after which he will occupy the building

store was formerly run, A young
man of experience in his line of business
he deserves his share of the
patronage of the people.
The commissioners of the county
this year, borrowed $2000 dollars of
the sinking fund with which to pay
claims against the. county. It was
done as a matter of accommodation
to those who held claims, and otherwise
would have been compelled to
wait six or nine months for taxes to
be collected. It would be much
better if the county could be placed
upon a cash basis and be ably to pay
all or its indebtedness just, as soon
as contracted.

Commissioners Hold a Meeting.

Quattlebauin, commissioners for
this county ior the Interstate and
West Indian Exposition, held their
lirst meeting on lust. Monday night
in the Hank Building for the purpose
of organizing and formulating some
do lint to plan looking to the getting
up of a creditable exhibit for the
county O. I'- Quattlcbaum Esq.
was* elected permanent chairman
and Col. I). A. Spivoy was elected
secretary and treasurer. It was
resolved that the board of coinmis
s'oners would not attempt to work
jp subscriptions to the capital stock
of the corporation but would bend
their energies towards working up
exhibits of the various resources of
the county. The cost of getting
up the exhibits would be not less
than $500, It. was decided to be the
better plan to place the entire work
in the hands of some one able to
devote his time and attention to it.
A report will lie made to headquarters
stating the results of the meeting
and asking full information in
regard to exhibits, expenses etc.
The exposition does not come oil
until December 11)01, and the com
missioners have a full year in which
to complete arrangements. We
shall keep the public informed from
time to time of the doings of the
commissioners and we hope that the
people at large will become interest
cd in this very important matter.
