It is certainly free from surface impurities. Hut no matter what popular belief may be. it is always safe to have the water from your well analyzed to detor mine whether it contains some poisonous mineral Analysis of water from wells in this section of the i State, lias shown that, the water from artesian wells in the same neighborhood may dill'er in mineral ele ments. Property is returned for taxation at about two thirds of its real value. No man can alTord to plaee his property oil the tax books at its true value so long as it is the praetiee of all his neighbors to return theirs at two thirds of its value or less, because it would cause him to have to pay more than his proportionate share of th?'taxes. It is to be deplored that no system of assessing taxes can be invented which will compel the return of all property at its full value. Such a plan could .vork no hardship and it would certainly make abetter showing for both com v and State. Every citizen c.f t ho town should do everything in his power to bring new enterprises to Conway. New enterprises will not injure those of the same kind already here, but to the contrary they will hoip those already here by making the town a larger center of trade. The greater the number of houses built to rent, the greater the number of people to live in them. The more stores we have open, the greater the number of customers to trade in them. The greater the number of our tobacco warehouses, the greater the amount of tobacco sold on Conway market. Thus we might go on through the list of all our business enterprises. Tiik rapidly increasing populat ion of the county necessarily increases the number of paupers who are sup |iurtcu uiitiiriy til- i in" I'Ajn'UM; in the county or obtain some assistance towards their support out of the public funds. During the last few years the number of paupers has been growing and hardly one half of those actually in a suffering condition, and deserving of public aid, have-re ceived any help from the county funds. The county has done all that it could to relieve their sufferings with the limited amount of funds appropriated for that purpose, 't can never do what it should without a change in the present system. The number of our destitute poor is lie coming so large that we believe a county poor house and farm will be a necessity in a few years from now. There's no doubt that such an | institution properly managed would result in a saving of expense even now. L. has brought a lot of material here for the purpose of en larging and remodeling their warehouse, which, when completed, will be the best on the W. C. A C. Kail road. Mr. J. 15. Povthress, a prominent tobacco warehouse man, was here to-day in the interest of the building of a tobacco warehouse here for the sale of leaf tobacco, the coming season. We think from all the indication that this is now beyond a doubt an assured fact, and the time not far olT when Loris will be on a new footing. The merchants and business men of the place are very much interested in the enterprise and therefore have subscribed liberally to the capital stock. A number of good farmers in t ho community have asked for stock. This is a much needed enterprise at Loris and she will doubtless become one of the leading tobacco markets in the State. A meeting of the stock holders will be held in the near future after which a proper site will be selected and the sound of many carpenters' hammers will be heard ringing on this structure which will bring prosperi x>y 10 our people. uons mis, will) this movement, a grand future ahead from natural resources. Tobacco lias brought many small towns of lesser importance up to'Jiigh standards of prosperity both as tobacco markets and manufacturers of the weed. Why not Loris? Can't she do as well as any of her sister towns in this respect, with her surroundings. it being 2f> miles from here to any town of note and it has many miles either way of the finest farming lands well adapted to the culture of tobacco. Our people will produce more of the golden weed the coining year thane/cr before. Why not all this tobacco be handled here to a better advantage to the farmers in this section and still without del riinent to near enterprises of the same kind?
