VOTE FOR SCARBOROUGH
FOR CONGrESS.

I ^ Jfci- S
P^'V* ^'v
At the Democratic Primary Elcc 1
tion on last Tuesday, out of 111,720
W' votes east in the district, Scarbor^
^ ough received 5,921,?GOO more than
either of his competitors.
His home county, Horry, gave
him 20511 votes out of a total of
z;>U&. JI is home precinct, Conway,
** gave him 208 votes out of 303; the
35 votes poljed against him were 27
for Mr. Norton and 8 for Mr. Ellerbe.
\ At Mullins, Mr. Norton's home
precinct, Mr. Scarborough received
80 votes. Mr. Norton 350 and MrEllerbe
21. Marion county gave Mr.
Scarborough 510 votes; florry gave
Mr. Norton 313.
The magnificent vote given Mr.
Scarborough by his own county is
proof of the high esteem in which he
is held by those who know him best.

Return to the I-'old.
Nearly all of the IIUU votes east
or Mr. Norton were east by good
noil under a misapprehension of
he .situation. Now, that the eleeiion
of Mr. Scarborough is a foregone
conclusion let's all hands vote
for him and make it theoretieally
unanimous as well as practically so.
After the second round we propose
to have a combination barbecue ..ml
love feast to which every body will
be invited to receive the right band
f fellowship. "While the light
holds out to burn Let the?
verybody return."
Honor to Horry.
All honor to Horry's loyal oiti
'.ens! Their vote for Derhain over
Hrooker was I1.") percent, and their
rote for Scarborough over Norton
was about SS per cent The numer)us
influences brought to hear in ia
yor of Norton were enticing, but the
lonest citizenship of this old "Independent
Republic" stood the test,
rhcy have asserted their manhood.
I'he result more than vindicates the
laiin of Mr. Scarborough, made
hrou^'^aVth^ campaign, that llor,y
would poll about 2,(100 votes and
aver 75 per cent, wore his strong
supporters. The people have been
true to Horry's interests in supporting
a man who will loo It after South
Carolina's interests and work for
the nation 'sgood
Adieu to Van Norton.
The slump in Mr. Norton's vote
in this county from the one thousand
claimed to the three hundred
received can bo attributed only to
the able management of Ids cam
paign here. The result illustrates
what a vigorus light, led-by an interested
private secretary can do.
Van and his Uncle .Tim saw the hand
writing on the wall and anticipated
the great land slide several months
ago.
Van tells it that he litis received
tv position in the pension department,.
No one is more elated over
this than we, and we congratulate
him on having the foresight to secure
such a position in advance of
losing his present one.
Marion's Step Forward.
Marion county is to be congratulated
in the defeat of that political
wire-puller and trickster, Jim Mont
gomery. Mr. Rlue, his successor is
a good business man and has a clean
record. If the better class of Marion
people could educate the others
up to the point of turning down tIk^
remaining member of the firm of
"Jim and Jocms" it would be a credit
to the inteligeuce of the county.
The other counties of the district
have shown a willingness and determination
to supplant Mr. Norton
with an abler and bet ter man. Why
can't Marion catch the inspiration
of the times and mount the band
wagon when it comes through on
the nth inst. We look for a handsome
majority in Marion county for
Scarborough in the second primary.
The Enterprising Enterprise.
The Mullins Enterprise's endorsement
of Brookor as a "high toned
christian gentleman" won for him
about 20 per cent, of the vote of the
State, rts support of Mr. Norton
won for him 12 per cent of the llorrv
county vote.
The Enterprise is indeed a power
in the State and should it be able to
retain the services of its ex nor t as
I
sistnnt editor, Van Norton, it will
eventually acquire that political in
(luencc so much desired by those
who oppose its present policy. The
friends of Messrs. Scarborough and
Derham owe this journal much for
the able manner in which it cspous*
cd the cause of Messrs. Norton and
Brooker. Brooker was defeated by
a vote of 1 to 4. Is it too much to
expect Norton to lose in second
game by a like proportion^

The intimation that any part of
t he I lorry vote waa fraudulent is
not only a reflection upon the faith
ful managers hut is an insult to the
honest men who east the 2.">00 ba'lots.
The threat of Mr. Norton, or his
friends to have J lorry's vote thrown
out in the 2nd primary would likely
cause him to lose a majority of the
at Ml votes east for him in the lirst.
The solid democracy of Horry is not
going just now to suit Mr. Norton
and hence his displeasure. When
east at his dictation the votes of
Horry are very desirable articles,
but when east in opposition to him j
they are very naughty objects, and
prove to be but stumbling blocks in J
the path of an anxious politician. \

The Mulllns Vote.
The Mullins lOntorprise in its last
issue makes the following sad announcement
:
"At this noil, there were *157 votes
cast, for congressman. Of this number,
Congresman Norton received
:tr>0; Scarborough St!, and KlbiVb/d 2l.
Mr. Norton s vote vens not us
unanimous as his friends had Imped
for.
Yes, tfiis is the wail all over the
district Mr. Norton and his supporters
(we don't say friends) had
freely boasted that he would be elected
in the lirst primary; and when
the count shows Scarborough in the
lead with <><>0 votes to spare, well
may it be said: "Norton's vote was
not as unanimous as his friends had
hoped for
Waccnmaw Improvements.
The engineers in charge of the
river improvements in and adjacent
to (Georgetown, claim that they have
never been able to secure the proper
aid from the congressman in this
district to make desired improvements
in the Waecaniaw. Failure
to lender this assistance can be
attributed only to lack of interest
or lack of inlluenee. They claim)
that with a moderate appropriation
the Wuceamaw can be made navigable
to Conway by all craft not
drawing oyer twelve feet. We tiiul
these men enthusiastic for Scarborough's
election, believing that
when in congress he will not neglect
the Waccamaw and the Pee Dee's
when the millions are being distributed.
ScAunoitoiMiii s election is an assured
fact almost everybody concedes
it. But don't let's be content
with two thousand majority. Let
Horry roll up *2,500 votes to his credit
and place his majority in the district
at least three thousand. Nothing
short of this should satisfy us.
Opinions of Others.
(Kohn ir News and Courier.)
"Mr. Scarborough's race, although
not a surprise to his friends, has
been a surprise to a jjroat many
others, and for a "first and handicapped
race it is lit t*e short of a marvel
in State politics."
(Darlington correspondence News
and Courier.)
The. results showed some surprises,
especially in the race for solicitor,
as it was expected that Mr. Brown
would carry this county with a safe
majority. For the past few weeks
it was confidently believed that

Mr. Scarborough's clear lead of
